My husband and I celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary at the JW week of Sept. 27-Oct 3rd...
I have been ranting on and on about how wonderful everything was since we have been home. We had a beautiful room on the 14th floor and we had Club 91 access. Our balcony was the second from the beach and the view was gorgeous. Upon check in of our room the staff of the Club had a wonderful bottle of wine and an awesome cake which said "Happy Anniversary"..
nice touch and terrific first impression!!

Hotel: The hotel is terrific, inside and out! The staff is the best! There was not one person that didn't make a point to say hell0(ohla), good afternoon, how are you, etc. Wonderful people!!

Food: We had breakfast, lunch and evening appetizers in the Club 91 lounge, therefore our dinners were mostly shared. We enjoyed Cafe Salsa & Gustinos at the JW and We also ate at the Champions in the Casa Magna (we were able to watch our team Penn State) in their resturant!! only once left the hotel and went across the street to eat at the Crab House, it
was nice to sit on their deck and enjoy the weather.

Shopping: we ventured out one day to the La Isla shopping area, which we found to be an excellent choice!

General: We never had any issues with getting chairs, there were plenty. The towel hut attendants did ask for our room number on the first day or so, they didn'nt ask for our room key though, then after a few times they were recognizing us and simply smiled and handed us a towel.

This was our first trip to cancun and I really was surprised that we didn't have one thing, moment, experience that was negative! We will definetly return to the JW.
Please feel free to ask me any questions...I frequent the forum; which I credit for helping us in our planning for this trip.
Also, we simply decided to relax and do nothing while we were there without our kids; however had we wanted to do any tours or sight see there were many options available. Just used the week to rest, rewind and rekindle "that loving feeling".

The good stuff first...
- The spa is amazing, we had a couple's massage and it was wonderful and the staff at the spa is amazing, friendly, and know their stuff. We walked out of there feeling refreshed and relaxed.
- All of the lower level (not management or front desk) employees (people cleaning in the hall, doormen, waiters, etc...) were friendly and greeted us with smiles, answered questions and were in general the ONLY redeeming thing about this hotel.
- You can't beat the views.
- Beach was clean and although a little rough, we still enjoyed it. The water is GORGEOUS and clear!!!!

Why I won't be staying here again...
- Front desk staff are rude and it made for an un-enjoyable first impression.
- Room was not anywhere near 5 star... the bathroom was great (although the tub is tiny), but the room itself was dingy, the view was gorgeous, but when we had the balcony doors open the door to the hotel room made this god-awful (LOUD) whistling noise that you could hear all the way down the hall.
- Pools were ok, but to shallow and not clean! There was a big pile of junk (including wrappers and chapstick) floating in the water where the kiddie pool spilled into the main pool. ICK!
- Got charged for mini-bar items that we didn't use and when it was brought to their attention it was fixed, but I have to wonder how many people didn't check things and got over-charged.

Cancun itself is too Americanized for me, this was our first trip here and probably the last. It didn't have the 'tropical foreign country' vibe that we had on our trip to St. Martin in March. We're both in our late 20s and not into the Coco Bongo scene so as far as relaxing vacations, next time we'll go somewhere a little more laid back... and we weren't even there in the high season!

I'd read nearly all of the reviews of the JW before our recent trip and I found them all very helpful. I found that the hotel more than lived up to the reputation I had built for it based upon these reviews.

We arrived last Friday (9/23) and although there seemed to be a little bit of confusion at the airport about our transportation, we were soon whisked off to the hotel in a shiny black sedan. Upon arrival, our request for an 'Infinity Pool View Room' was not met, which I thought was a little strange, as several employees later told me that the hotel was running at about 30-40%. Oh well, never mind - I did get a Nonsmoking King on the 8th floor fairly close to the beach (810) which had a terrific view. We quickly settled in and ran straight down to the beach.

As expected (once again from the previous reviews) the beach sand was awesome, and I loved the slightly rougher surf.

The next morning, I was expecting all of the beach and pool chairs to be covered with towels or books and such, but was pleased to find that there were plenty of great spots, even near the infinity pool (at 9am). The perks of traveling during the low season, I guess. The pools and ocean quickly gets you in a relaxed state of mind. From reading an earlier review, I brought with me a collapsible cooler which I stocked daily with Coronas. It was a great investment, as drinks are quite expensive there. The waiters didn't mind and Daniel (see below) even offered to bring me limes! However, make sure you bring a plastic cup - pools and glass don't mix.

A couple of highlights with regard to the staff. There is a pool area waiter called Daniel who is pretty new there. We sought his area out after meeting him on our first full day. He really took great care of us. We had gone for a walk down the beach when a sudden rainstorm came in. Even though we had nothing that wouldn't mind getting a little wet, we came back to find him covering everything for us. He also had a great suggestion for finding the large conch shells (near the rocks in front of the CasaMagna Marriott. I went down there and, sure enough, came back with 3 decent shells for my sweetie.

Lunch each day was great - the seafood wraps were awesome.

On our final night we dined at Gustanos. I thought the food, wine list, and service were outstanding. It was a wonderful final evening of our vacation. We WILL return.

Having read all the reviews before travelling to Cancun, both my husband and I were undecided between JW and the Ritz-Carlton due to conflicting reviews; however, after staying a week at JW, we are pretty confused regarding the negative comments about this resort.

Club 91 was a very good idea for us, as it was extremely convenient and if we didn't feel like going out to eat, the selection was fine. If you are looking for large lunches and dinners, you will need to eat in one of the restaurants, but if you are happy to just to sample food, this is fine. The staff are wonderful and we would like to thank Junko, Janis, Ricardo and Vanessa for making our stay very enjoyable.

I have to say that we will go back to the JW when in Cancun. The room was spotless and we had a lovely balcony overlooking one of the pools and the ocean.

The infinity pool system is very well thought out, the depth being around 4' and designed in a manner so that you don't feel like it is crowded.

The spa facility was really pleasant and I had a wonderful massage.

We would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone.

The JW Marriott resort and spa was beautiful but not in the five star category. The pool area was very crowded, chairs allowed to block the entrance and exits of pools, food dropped on the ground was not cleaned in several days. The pool area was poorly maintained - dirty in the morning, cleaned while guests were wanting to swim. Guests had to get up at 6:30 am to claim a lounge chair or go without. A wedding was held with loud, loud music around the pool area until 1AM. After several complaints, the front desk just ignored the phones - I was told initially it (the music) would stop certainly by 11PM only to continue until 1AM. The cleanup for that wedding was finished in the morning with trash, water bottles and left over cocktails all around. A request to speak to the manager the next day was ignored. Too much lack of attention to detail to warrant it's rating, I have stayed at lower rated hotels and had better service and much more attention to detail.

The suite we had was spacious, very clean and comfortable. All of the food was first rate. Most employees were very courteous and helpful.
