We stayed at both the JW Marriott (4 days) last year and the CasaMagna (3 days). Being 5 months pregnant I was a little worried about being in another country with regards to food, water, and bugs. We at all but two meals at the hotel for this reason. I didn’t have any problems at all with food, water, or bugs- I did however only drink bottled water. I was also worried about there being a lot of spring breakers at our hotel. I didn’t notice any at the JW. There were actually a lot of families at the JW including a lot of infants. On our last day at the CasaMagna there was a small group of spring breakers at the pool- they were loud and causing some problems but the management took care of it right away.
Both hotels are very nice and clean. We stayed at the JW first then moved to the CasaMagna. I recommend doing it the other way around. The JW as far as the rooms and pool go are much nicer. Had I not stayed at the JW I would have thought the CasaMagna was very nice.
Resort: Both were beautiful and very clean. The staff was very nice and helpful.
Pool: Was awesome and very big at the JW- never felt crowded. Plenty of chairs and umbrellas at both. JW had beautiful views of the ocean. Chairs were much nicer at the JW and the pool food was better. Wait staff at the pool was great- never had to chase any one down for our order.
Room: JW Room was beautiful and clean, however like others have said the beds were hard. We had a suit at the CasaMagna and it was very nice and clean however the décor of the room looked a little dated.
Food: The food was great. Had lots of options with both Marriotts. We ate at the Japanese steak house twice- it was really good. The regular steak place was okay- for the money I would have gone to Ruth’s Chris. We ate at the breakfast buffet at both Marriotts and they were great as well. Both hotels have food in their gift shop. It was a great way to eat breakfast on the cheap and it was really good. Had excellent chocolate croissants, donuts, fruit, and orange juice. We got a lot of food for about $10. Room service was very nice as well. I have had room service at a lot of hotels and it was very fancy at the JW. Don’t order pizza from the room service menu at the CasaMagna.
I found the food to be reasonably priced for a resort type environment; however, they rip you off on the drinks. It was around $4 for a can of coke. We took the ½ hour bus ride- which wasn’t bad at all- to the Wal Mart where we stocked up on drinks. It made eating by the pool, etc… much more economical. I highly recommend doing this especially if you have a family. I was told the bus ride would take 45 minutes but it didn’t and it seemed like we were there in no time.
Overall, I would go back to the JW in a heartbeat. I would go back to the CasaMagna if it was a really good deal for a weekend getaway. I would rather try other hotels in the Caribbean before going back to the CasaMagna. I give the JW 5 stars based on the room and pool and the CasaMaga 3 stars. We actually ate at the CasaMagna more than the JW, but overall the food was 4.5 stars.
