I wanted warm sunny weather and a beach on the cheap. The Park Royal provided this and more. It has a nice beach whereas some other hotels on both sides had only sea walls, (e.g. no really long walks along the beach). The location is excellent. There is an ancient ruin right on the beach. Also, there are three shopping centers within walking access, the best one directly across the street. It was a very nice evening spot to people watch, enjoy the street mimes, and do some souvenir shopping if you are not into the bar scene. Being in the hotel zone, there is easy access for doing tours-companies will pick you up at the hotel. The hotel staff were all very attentive and pleasant. The food was edible. In the Italian restaurant they tried very hard to make it 5-star dining by offering wine, suggesting a chefs special, providing good classical music with a violinist or cellist being accompanied by a sound track. The meal presentation was artful. It might have been more of a 4-star but they were trying really hard. The maids kept the room immaculate and provided towel animals each day. Yes, the toilets don't flush well and the windows on the cheap rooms don't open so it is hard to dry out the swimsuits. In the Yucatan, we really should be putting the TP in the wastebasket, not the toilet and maybe the system would work better. Or use the public restroom when you have an urgent need. But don't bother raising your blood pressure by complaining about the toilets, I am sure they already know. Know this before you go and deal with it- its not such a big deal, is it really? For clean rooms, great sand beach, ancient Mayan ruin, great shopping mall, attentive staff, reasonably good food/drink, and a budget price? We thought it provided a good value.
