This was my first trip to Cancun - and a week's stay at the Hotel Royal Park Piramides was a gift from my sister. I read through the reviews on TripAdvisor, both good and bad, and found them helpful. I paid heed to tips on mildew odor, helpful staff, coffee filters, food selection, possible theft.
These are my observations.
(1) We had a large one bedroom suite - super, super clean with maid service, new towels and clean sheets every single day
(2) Water in the jacuzzi was luke warm, so we just used it once
(3) There is a definite mildew odor; however if you leave the a/c on all the time, you do not smell it unless you are in the hallways
(4) Staff were polite and considerate. A+. Front desk could be more gracious.
(5) Food was average. Comments on the buffet - Breakfast - you can have your eggs done any way you want, good selection of fresh fruits. Lunch and Dinner - on two occassions food selection was very unappealing.
(6) The Italian Restaurant (Mirado) was ok. Salads and appetizers were excellent; dinner was average.
(7) Snacks outside the buffet were ok. Cookies, fish tacos, ribs were some good items. The hamburger stand was ok. Hot dogs and pizza were awful.
(8) Desserts - flan was the best. Cakes were not so good.
(9) Although the rules state you cannot take food to the room - and this is definitely a handicap - you can take food to the room if it is in storage containers (ask the waiter) or paper plates (available at the Hamburger stand)
(10) There is a small store on the premises - with water, ice-cream, snacks, and the USA Today which costs around $4
(11) The two pools are very clean.
(12) Access to the hotel's private beach is invaluable. Clean sands, beautiful beach, not too croweded
(13) We did pay an extra $2 per day for use of the safe deposit box - worth every dollar for peace of mind
(14) Nobody hassled us for timeshare purchases or any sales
(15) We were able to get a shuttle to the hotel for $6 each but had to take a cab to the airport ($20)
(16) There is a mall across the street with two very small supermarkets.
(17) We used public transportation - a trip to downtown is $0.70 one way, a/c bus is $1.10. The Transit Center is Downtown has frequent service to Playa de la Carmen, Tulum, etc. Buses are clean with air-conditioning and toilets and prices that can't be beat - $12 to Playa de la Carmen round trip!
(18) The airport was chaotic - when we arrived hordes of people clamor for your attention trying to give you "freebies" which, if you decide to take, will entail that you sit through a timeshare presentation. There is however, just one official information center at the airport which gives you free information on Cancun. Make arrangements to be at the airport at least 2.5 hours before your flight takes off. The lines of people waiting to check in to their respective airlines is daunting - especially since there is no official letting you know which line represents which airline and you rely on the people in line to tell you (and they are sometimes wrong!!) Also be aware that all of your luggage is opened before you check in.
After all this - would I return to Park Royal? Probably not - Why? Two reasons only - the food and the mildew odor. If these were corrected I would have no problem at all with this hotel.
