Jun 27, 2009 | Trip type: Friends getaway

This was my second stay at Moon Palace but my first stay at the Sunrise side of the resort. This stay surpassed my last visit in 2002. My visit this time was for a friend's wedding which was beautiful.

The Sunrise side caters to mostly families with children and most of the restaurants are on this side of the hotel. I roomed at Luna rm 1750 which was convenient and close to the lobby and beach. The room was nicely updated along with great amenities. The hotel had toiletry supplies as well like Biosilk shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, shavers and shaving cream, toothbrushes and tooth paste, cotton balls to nail filers.

There are many lounge chairs at the many pools as well as numerous beach chairs too. The waitress and waiters would walk around the pool area taking drink and food orders throughout the day.

I've got to try most of the restaurants during my stay like the Oriental restaurant at Sunrise, Barracuda, Mexican, Italian and Brazilian resturants but I must say the food in 2002 was much better. Although it wasnt a disappointment but I had a high expectation this time.

The beach is always not swimmable due to the many seaweeds along the shores but that's expected on the Riveria Maya side of Cancun. Moon Palace do have tracker trailers that would drive around during the day to clean up the seaweed but with so much washing up ashore how much can you clean throughout the day.

There are nightly entertainment on both the Nizuc and Sunrise side of the hotel. Dont miss out on the fireshow and the Circus show. It can get crowded so arrive early and hold your seats.

All in all I had a great time and didnt want to come back to reality. The weather forecasted cloudy and rainy weather for Cancun but it never rained the 7 days I was there. Basically it was high 80s and sunny the whole time.

What you pay for is what you get for the Moon Palace. My next trip would be to stay at the Moon Palace in D.R. That's newly open this year and would like to see if that hotel can meet up to Cancun's par.

Pros: The resort is gorgeous. The grounds are manicured. The pool is clean and huge. Lots of chairs and big towels. The beach is immaculate. The entrance into the resort is guarded so we felt fairly safe. The people that work at the hotel provide amazing service. The employees at the restaurants go out of the way to provide you with outstanding service. You never have to flag a person down for anything while dining--they are close by and attentive. The rooms are beautiful--tile floors and bath. Have great views. The gym is clean and the attendants are great. The spa is fabulous.

Cons: The resort is very secluded and there is little to do at night. If all you want to do is hang out at the pool or beach. this is the resort for you. You have to leave the resort for movies, shopping, etc. The room has a double jacuzzi in it. Felt like the space would have been better served as a sitting area.

The only thing I can say was dissappointing was the check in process and response from the hotel mgmt. At the time of booking, we asked for 2nd or 3rd floor room near pool. We called 5 and 3 days before and were told that the room was confirmed. When we got to check in--they were putting us in a building far away from the pool and ground floor. We asked the person to please get us closer to the pool and off the ground floor. Needless to say, it took 30 minutes to get a room closer to the pool. We were supposed to receive a golf/spa credit at check in and we had to wait another 10 mintues while the front desk got that fixed. Ericka, the person at the front desk, was not helpful or friendly. After check-in, no one offered to take us to our room . We hauled 7 bags across the grounds. We get to the room and the sink does not work right. We called the hotel mgmt who took another hour to find us a room. Finally, we were given the room that we had been originally promised nearly 3 hours after arriving at the resort. We spoke to the Asst Mgr of the resort who was so indifferent. He said we could not have been promised any certain room because they can't promise rooms due to availabiltiy. We told him who we talked to and it did not seem to matter. The hotel is only 40% full and he gave the impression that he did not care whether we stayed or left the resort. We found it interesting the the person at the highest rung on the food chain that we dealt with was less caring than anyone else we encountered at the resort.

I stayed with my wife and 13 & 15 year old from 6/16 -6/24 and had a blast. This hotel is a 4 star, very clean and the staff were excellent. Food was your usual buffet, but the with the wide selection you could always find something you liked . The steaks were awesome!
The oriental restaurant at Cancun place(Miyago?) is a must. Great sushi & Bennie Hana type chef

This place is huge! We visited the Nizuc side & Gran Moon(new wing) often. About a 5-10 minute walk or quick shuttle or golf cart. We traveled to the Beach & Cancun palaces a lot. For swimming only the Cancun is really decent after the last hurricane. Beach palace has a very minimal beach , Moon to much seaweed, Cancun is just right. The palace connection definitley let us take advantage of the best of each.

One drawback is due to this being isolated travel to the other hotels was only at 12, 2 & 5, and for only 4 hours. Taxi to town about $20. No bus transportation to moon due to location

very peaceful loction, great golf course & spa

Tours to chichen-Itza , wet & Wild, Isla Mujeres, & Tulum all covered.

Will go back next year

My wife and I were booked to stay at the Moon Palace Resort & Spa, Cancun, Mexico, 2nd - 14th May 2009. At the email/telephone invitation of the resort, mistakingly thinking them a reputable organisation, we paid up front for our vacation via credit card. Unfortunately, due to Swine Flu outbreak and UK Government advice, we had to cancel our visit. This was on the understanding that, in accordance with the agreement that they sent to us, we would have to forfeit the cost of one nights stay at the hotel and the remainder of our fee would be returned within 14 days. However, nearly 2 months later, numerous emails (all ignored) and long distance telephone calls, still no refund. Though each time we telephone we are told that the matter is " being dealt with by the administration department", (whom we can not speak to directly), and our refund will be with us in 7 to 14 days!! So, beware of very pleasant sounding personnel representing Palace Resorts calling and emailing to discuss the benefits of up-front payment. Once they have, in effect, STOLEN your money, they will not be in contact again. I am currently taking legal advice - but who needs this kind of stress from a suposedly honourable company. We are looking to visit Cancun in the future - but most definitely wont be staying at a Palace Resort and would advise others to be wary.

We just returned from a wonderful stay at Moon Palace 6/13 - 6/20. Occupancy was about 30 to 40 percent. To bad for the employees but great for the guests. No problem with chairs at the pool, no wait for drinks poolside, very little wait at the restaurants except for the very popular italian at the golf course and the mexican at nizuc. Lobby bars at both sunrise and nizuc were both fabulous. Wait staff at pools and restaurants are absolutely wonderful. They are friendly, courteous and genuine. It is as they say, "it's my pleasure" and you can tell they are sincere. The respect the entire staff have for one another whether they are trimming hedges, cleaning the pool, painting, driving a golf cart or waiting tables, there is a genuine respect among one another and it carries over to the guests staying at the resort.
We stayed at Nizuc, the oldest section, a little quieter than sunrise but not as quiet as Grand. Rooms were clean, jacuzzi worked well, no drain problems. Slight problems in the room when we arrived were addressed within minutes to our satisfaction and as always it was their pleasure. Restaurants were very good with the exception of the brazilian. As others have mentioned the meat seemed dried out. We did eat there late, maybe an earlier dinner would result in a more satisfying experience there.
Second floor bar at grand was wonderful at night sipping late night cocktails watching the lightning show over the ocean in the distance was spectacular. Trip to Isla Mujeres was a lot of fun and a great day trip. Day trip to beach palace was great, nice to see the irradescent blue water and a great view of the entire peninsula from the rooftop pool.
We were celebrating our 25th anniversary along with the moon palace and we couldn't have made a better choice of places to stay. The staff really did make us feel like royalty. One last thing we did go to the 90 minute presentation with some hesitation and we have gone to other timeshare presentations which can be extremely uncomfortable. This was not bad at all. No high pressure, a nice tour particularly of hte presidential suites. When all was said and done we said no thank you, we were sent on our way with spa credit for a couples facial and a leg and foot massage at the golf course spa.
If you have the time not a bad deal. Hope this review helps and hope you have as great an experience as we had.
