Pros: Exceptional staff, always eager to serve. Nice facility, very clean. Huge pool with no problems finding chairs. Fun daily activities such as the kitchen tour, salsa lessons, movies, scuba instruction, poolside pottery and more. Alcohol is included.
Cons: One convention of the "wrong crowd" can destroy your entire vacation, smoking is allowed almost everywhere, the majority of food is prepared in mass and simply average.
Neutral observations: Not enough activities to fill an entire week, family friendly (which can be good or bad depending on what you are looking for), large convention and conference area, remote resort with no transportation to area attractions. Would recommend for families, people who enjoy time share type properties, and those looking to simply escape who don't really care where they are. Would not recommend for honeymooners, those who enjoy fine dining or enjoy more active vacations. Always call before booking and inquir as to the conferences or conventions that will be there during your stay. Internet access available for $2.50 for 15 minutes. Nextel phones, no others, will work on premises.
Our trip: We were on a paid incentive trip with a group of home builders and our entire trip was paid for. Because of this, I have difficulty deciding whether this is something I would have gladly paid for on my own. We stayed 1 week and found the Moon Palace to be a pleasant and basic all inclusive resort. Unfortunately, we are not the "all inclusive" types and often prefer to mingle outside our resort. This was difficult until we rented a car. Cancun's main tourist area is about a 15 minute drive. Tulum is over and hour. Playa Del Carmen can be reached in about 45 minutes. The food here was basic. The one restaurant worth mentioning is their Asian inspired MoMoNaHa's, which was great. The breakfast buffet's and Italian dinner buffet are a worthy honorable mention (on par with a 3.5 star restaurant). Rooms were clean. Staff was great. The resort shows little evidence of Hurricane Wilma although the hotel zone of Cancun is a complete mess (don't even think of going for at least another year!). Overall, I would have given this resort 4 starts until another (much larger) conference arrived. Unfortunately, it was a group of heavy drinkers, smokers and large families that didn't supervise their children. The restaurants flooded with people in "wife beater" undershirts and baseball caps in the dining room, the pools flooded with kids running and splashing everyone in sight, and the lobby filled with thick smoke. None of these were within the control of Moon Palace, but certainly something to consider before booking your trip. The staff and a spa employee told me that their Adventura Resort nearby is smaller, with better food, no children and less conference attendees. If we went back, it would be to Adventura.
