WARNING: DO NOT GIVE YOUR CREDIT CARD DETAILS TO REY CARIBE'S ONLINE RESERVATION PAGE.

I sent an email to Rey Caribe enquiring about vacancies and did not receive a response. So I bit the bullet and booked online at Rey Caribe's reservation page. Rey Caribe require credit card details for the booking. The reservation page promised to respond within 24 hours to confirm reservation. After a couple of days, I emailed Rey Caribe to advise them that since I did not receive a response, I will take it that there were no rooms available (at this stage I was thinking how rude and that I will be writting to all the travel guides to whinge).

Lo and behold, a month after I return from Cancun, I receive my Mastercard statement showing that Rey Caribe have charged my Mastercard! I am now fuming at thier obvious scam.

This is a great little hotel in the City Center away from the sprawl and opulence of the hotel zone. Great service and smiling faces. Yummy breakfast; cozy simple rooms and of course the awesome garden and pool. Lots to do if you are interested in real Mexico vs hotel hideaways.

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights after a week on Isla Mujeres.
While we wished we had planned to stay longer on Isla, we were pleased with this property and enjoyed exploring in downtown Cancun. The hotel property is beautiful and the room was quiet and very clean. A few tiny ants on the wall were the only bugs I saw, and to be honest, I expected to see more crawly things in this tropical climate than I saw my whole trip. The employees at the hotel were reserved, but friendly enough and helpful if we had questions. If you are looking for a trip to the beach, this is not the place unless you are willing to take a bus or taxi, which we did one day and it was tolerable. One word of caution.....the closest Mercado to this hotel is Mercado 23. It is scary, dirty, nasty, smelly, etc.! This was the worst experience of my whole 10 days in Mexico. Other Mercados in the city might be better, but don't let yourself be caught in this one. Overall, I've seen all I care to see of Cancun, but WILL be back next year for more time on Isla Mujeres....my kind of place!

We visited El Rey del Caribe in Cancun during high season but in spite of the hotel being busy we were treated nicely and enjoyed our stay. You can't beat the location of this hotel, right next to a large grocery and a short walk to the central bus station which can take you anywhere in the Yucatan (Mexico for that matter) or just to the beach. Nice gentle surroundings, a garden, fountains, hammocks, clean quiet room, all in a busy neighborhood. We enjoyed the breakfasts that are included in the rate and found this to be a great place to make a soft landing before heading off to travel in the interior of the Yucatan. One really nice thing...our flight was delayed by several hours so we wouldn't get to the hotel until about 2 AM. I called ahead (in English) and there was someone there to meet us and take us to our room when we finally made it.

I saw rave reviews of this place and I dont think it quite lives up to the hype. That said this hotel has some great features and I would definitely consider staying there again.

First the good: The hotel grounds are VERY nice, very green. A very pleasant space to be in. I was travelling alone and my room was huge! I was big for me but it would probably also be more than enough for two people. The room was very nice and clean and maybe most important - VERY quiet. I also got a free breakfast in the morning that was pretty good.

The down sides: I flew into Cancun and decided to try thier airport pickup. They guy arrived like an hour late and I had to deal with the annoying hyenas at the airport while I waited for him. Luckily I brought the hotel number with me so I was able to call and let them know that I was waiting around. In the end they gave me a 10% discount on the price of the transport but this obviously gave me a very bad first impression of the hotel.

I also thought that the staff was a mixed bag. Some of the hotel handymen were very helpful and friendly but the reception was a a bit unsympathetic at times. Overall I would say the management was just OK.

Also the jucuzzi is a joke and is basically out of order and the pool is pretty small and looks the the maintenance is so-so. The hotel location is OK, its a short walk to the bus terminal and other stuff in the center so thats a plus.

Like a lot of people on this forum I am not a big fan of Cancun and I only stayed here one night. That said, I would recommend this place mostly for the low price (by Cancun) standards. If you keep in mind the caveats I mentioned this could be a good place to hang out for a while.

  • Liked — Room and grounds
  • Disliked — Airport pickup, attitude of SOME staff
