TripAdvisor had recommended this hotel so we booked with Bestday.com and were so disappointed. The room was dark and not updated. The bathroom had a compostable toilet that didn't work well. I don't think we could get any hot water in the shower. Or, at least we couldn't figure it out. Fortunately, we only stayed one night.
The complimentary breakfast however was lovely and held in an pretty outdoor courtyard.
It was a nice way to end the stay but still we couldn't wait to escape. There must be a better option for a low budget stay in Cancun.

We arrive dexpecting to put our room on credit card. No go. Ended up using almost all my dollars on the room and transportation because they wouldn't take travelers checks either.

This hotel is quiet. We enjoyed the 2 hammocks in the courtyard. The plants in the courtyard are all in pots, except for the trees of course. The breakfast was adequate for the price, and we tried some of their smoothies.

If you stay here, go to the bus station and change your money at the cambios there. You'll find much better exchange rates than hotels on the strip. Also, we were within walking distance of mercado 28, for those looking for cheap souveniers.

Room - Big enough, and the bed was OK. The shower was not good, as water pressure was affected everytime someone below us flushed the toilet or turned on the water. Regarding the toilet - it's a low water variety, only 2 cups of water. This meant that some things took more than 1 flush to go down, if you get my meaning. FYI, no elevator for 3rd floor rooms.

There are lots of birds in the trees, so expect one to wake you up early. This is definately not a party hotel.

What I liked best - the quiet feel, the hammocks and the price.
What I liked least - the shower and toilet, no credit cards.

We stayed at the hotel on Feb.16 for 2 nights. It´s a hotel for independent minded travellers since it is situated right on downtown Cancun and away from the hotel zone. Everything is accessible with the local buses and the long-distance bus station is just next door. A lot of dining options and traveller´s services around the area. We got room number 24 which was on the ground floor and all the way to the back. It was kind of dingy and dark. The airconditioner was noisy during our first night but after we brought it up, they went ahead and fixed it and that took care of the problem. Overall our stay was fine and I recommend this hotel for its practicality, accessibility, and value for money.

The Rey del Caribe is a real gem and a boon to travellers wanting to spend one or more nights in Cancun Centro (downtown). The rooms are very good value with a small kitchen where you could cook if you wanted to - I doubt many people do! They're a good size, clean and comfortable.

The price includes breakfast which is served in the central courtyard area, a delightful green space well planted with trees and bushes. There's a small pool with loungers and two hammocks. The staff are polite and helpful but unobtrusive.

It's best to pay cash as they make a 4% surcharge for credit card payments.

The location is good, close to the bus station and local buses. But it's definitely NOT a beach hotel - it's a bus or taxi ride to get to the beaches.

Would definitely stay there again if passing through Cancun.

WARNING: DO NOT GIVE YOUR CREDIT CARD DETAILS TO REY CARIBE'S ONLINE RESERVATION PAGE.

I sent an email to Rey Caribe enquiring about vacancies and did not receive a response. So I bit the bullet and booked online at Rey Caribe's reservation page. Rey Caribe require credit card details for the booking. The reservation page promised to respond within 24 hours to confirm reservation. After a couple of days, I emailed Rey Caribe to advise them that since I did not receive a response, I will take it that there were no rooms available (at this stage I was thinking how rude and that I will be writting to all the travel guides to whinge).

Lo and behold, a month after I return from Cancun, I receive my Mastercard statement showing that Rey Caribe have charged my Mastercard! I am now fuming at thier obvious scam.

  • Liked — N/A
  • Disliked — Credit Card Scam happening here...did not go past making a booking at the internet and providing my credit card details and not hearing back from Rey Caribe.
