My husband and I were given a trip to Cancun by a furniture company since we bought furniture there. The Laguna Suites was chosen by an agency, not by us. I had read on the Internet that they pushed Time Shares. When we arrived at Laguna Suites Sandra went over information about the hotel. She said she wanted to give us a presentation the next morning at 8:45 a.m. about the Sunset group. I told her we weren't interested in a presentation. She said she would give us a free bottle of liquor and a $20 coupon off a massage. I told her we were not interested. We were given a blue band to wear on our wrist. Blue meant we had to pay for everything. You also had to wear it to go to the other hotels in the Sunset group.
Our room was Room 124 on the ground floor. The main door is a sliding glass door, but it did have a keyed lock on both sides. In the main living room was a sofa bed, a table, & 4 chairs and a counter with a mini bar. There was a toaster and coffee maker in the room. A hall with a vanity ran past the bathroom. The bathroom was tile with a large shower (no bathtub). The bedroom had two full beds. A television set on top of a dresser. There were about 30 television channels, but only 3 that spoke English. In the bedroom there was a large closet with a safe inside. There was also an iron and ironing board.
The view from the bedroom window was the back of the hotel with several airconditioning units in operation. The view from the front of the room was the swimming pool. When the curtains were open, the people at the pool had full view of our room. So we kept our curtains closed.
The room was relatively clean with tile floors. The maid used a broom to clean, but did not use a mop. My feet became dirty from the floors. When we arrived, one of the two glasses in the room was dirty. It looked as if someone had brushed their teeth and rinsed their mouth with the glass.
The service was excellent. The waiters at the restaurant were excellent. The food was plain, but good. The price of a sandwich and a drink was on the average about $10.00. Food everywhere in Cancun was expensive.
The pool was small and clean. A swim up bar was available. The pool was not over 4 feet in depth. There was a more shallow end and a deeper end.
A golf course was at the back of the hotel and we were allowed to walk on the golf course between 6 - 8 a.m. and 6 - 8 p.m. We really enjoyed our walks.
A shuttle came by the hotel every hour. After a 15 minute ride, the bus first stopped at the Ocean Hotel. It was a nice quiet hotel with a beach area. Their buffet was great, but had a price tag of $20.00 each person. Another 15 minutes and you were at the Lagoona Hotel where the marina was located. Then another 15 minutes and we were at the Sunset Royal, the largest of the 4 hotels. This was where the beach was located. We walked through the hotel, past the pool and down steps to the beach. You could also walk to a flea market and other shops. The flea market did not have flea market prices and the shop owners all tried to talk us into going and buying in their shop. It was nerve racking so we left the area and walked on down the streets where we found the regular shops were cheaper than the flea market.
Down the street from Laguna Suites was a store where we bought drinks and snacks at a low cost. It was across from the Holiday Inn Express.
Most people spoke English and they were happy to accept American dollars. We did not have to exchange any money. Next time I will take a calculator to figure pasos into dollars.
The only things needed would be a small refrigerator and microwave in the room since it is a suite and would surely be used.
