We just came back from a relaxing trip down to Cancun. I was contacted by a marketing agency and sold a package over the phone for a stay at one of the Sunset Group's resorts. (From looking at other reviews - I did not get the cheapest package!) This was the first time I had done something like this so I was feeling unsure after the fact. After reading some of the reviews posted on TripAdvisor, I was glad to be going to Laguna Suites but hesitant about the "90 minute" presentation (but found some of the information on previous reviews very helpful).
We were met at the airport and shuttled in. Once we got to the hotel we were greeted with drinks and given information about the hotels and the time for the presentation. (There are two times, one in the morning and one in the afternoon) We did the all inclusive plan so we were given wrist bands to wear. We were shown to our room which looks exactly like the ones you see in the pictures. There is air conditioning in the room and luckily I asked about it when we got there as the bellboy had to go downstairs (we were on the second floor) to turn a main switch on. We only used it to cool the room down and we could sleep comfortably without it during this week. If it is your first time to Cancun (as it was ours) you will be happy to know that even though it was 29 to 30 degrees celcius everyday, the breeze off the ocean and lagoons made it very comfortable. Definitely bring a hat, sunglasses, beach wear, and sunscreen.
Our 90 minute presentation lasted about 3 hours. They will tell you that the more you ask questions, the longer it will be and that is true. What is included is a meal with a sales rep, a tour of the Lagoon and Royal and information about the timeshare. Most of you should know that getting a good deal on your vacation here means listening to their presentation. So, we went in with a good attitude and enjoyed meeting the sales representatives. We had 5 people talk to us not including Joel from Laguna Suites. If you are not going to buy a suite down there then keep reminding yourself as you are going through the presentation - it will help! If you are looking into buying something down there then it seems like a good deal. You help them by buying two suites and they give you a deal. There is also a vacation package too. Mind you, this was our first timeshare presentation (and no we didn't buy anything).
We brought our things with us as we ended the presentation at the Royal and spent the rest of the afternoon at the lovely white sand beach. There were waiters taking drink orders, a snack bar and a bar by the pool's edge. There are towels available pool side at all the hotels. Unfortunately, there are no lockers for those of us hotel hopping but I read somewhere the front desk has a safe too. We just kept an eye on our things down by the beach (the life guard makes sure people who are not from the hotel stayed out of the swimming area but the public can walk across the hotel's beach). We returned via hotel shuttle (always on time and the driver was very nice, accommodating a request for us once. One time there were too many people for the van...I think they made an extra trip back for them - note that it is always busy just about dinner time, the 6 pm or 7 pm shuttles).
We went to one dinner and show at the Royal. There is lots of audience participation so this is your 15 minutes of fame.
Other things we took advantage of was trying out the different hotels' facilities (not just the toilets!). The event staff at the Lagoon was very interactive and went around trying to get people for each event. He was very friendly as was everybody I met at the hotels. We had enough time on our own and had some time talking with other guests. It wasn't too much either way.
So, if you want a nice relaxing place away from the hustle and bustle pick Laguna Suites. There is no view of the ocean or lagoon but the last four units (1st and 2nd floors) have a view of the golf course. Others have views of the restaurant and pool. While you are on your presentation, don't forget to pick up the activity schedule from the Lagoon before you leave for the Royal. Then after your presentation you can pick one up from the Royal. If you want any of the special services or make any appointments/reservations, you need to book it a day ahead. We enjoyed a guided tour to Chichen Itza for $59 USD - bus pick up and drop off at the hotel plus lunch and guided tour. We needed cash for the reservation desk at Laguna but we could pay by credit for the tour later. We also had to make dinner reservations at the Royal (it seems big groups have a harder time getting seats because the other big groups tend to linger more while on holiday in Cancun...:)). Bring sneakers for that (no sandals allowed and supposedly no shorts but it was not enforced.) We had a couples massage at the spa at Laguna using the $30 off coupons (each person). It was very nice! If you want to work out, there is a small gym with an awesome view at the Royal too.
We brought pesos but the hotels and shops also deal in USD (US dollars). The Lagoon and Royal both have ATM machines. The hotel has an okay rate for Canadian dollars but the tour operator gives a lousy exchange rate (we overheard someone complaining about it).
One last thing, the website for the Sunset group doesn't do it justice, so we were pleasantly surprised by all that we saw there. Doing the resort AI (all inclusive) thing was a first for us so we didn't have any expectations. We were very happy with the whole trip. We really enjoyed ourselves and have nothing negative to say about it - except it was too short!
