I am in the same position as the person who commented before me. My friend and I got to Cancun and waited on our shuttle for 20 minutes. It was too hot to just be standing outside in the 98 degree heat with jet lag and our American, long pant long sleeve clothes on. (When we got on the plane it was not even 50 degrees) The driver was extremely late, although the guy with our sign and our plane were on time. Then he told us he was taking us to Sunset Royal, instead of the Ocean Spa, where we were scheduled to stay. Upon arrival we found out that all 3 of the other resorts were closed and that was the only one open so we had to stay there. It would have been nice to have received a phone call letting us know before we traveled there. We paid an extra $99 a night for all inclusive.. and we were promised all meals and drinks at ANY restuarant or bar in ANY of the hotels.. well since they were closed we had to choose between the two restuarants at the Royal. Then we were also informed that we could only eat Italian one night and lobster one night. Neither of us wanted lobster and they told us too bad, we could not trade it. So we were screwed out of at least 4 restuarants we had to choose from when we booked and the "eat and drink anything for free" phrase was a con. Not to mention when we signed up over the phone for all inclusive, several months earlier, we were promised a "yacht cruise" and "a day at the spa" HA who were we kidding. We did not get any type of cruise.. and our day at the spa was at our expense. They gave us a coupon for $30 off select services. The cheapest thing was $60, so we would still have to pay $30 (in U.S. dollars), but those things were already on sale for $25. Therefore, any normal customer would receive it cheaper than I could with my coupon, because you could not use a coupon on the special. It was a total rip off. We complained about it and eventually paid $24 a person plus tip for a couple of things they had on sale. While we were there, they opened up the Sunset Lagoon. There was supposed to be a boat running from one hotel to the other every 20 minutes. Somehow, they changed that to every 30 minutes. And one time we went to catch it and they said it stopped running at 4 p.m. Also, the shuttle van that goes from Lagoon to Royal changed their schedule to every one or two hours instead of 30 minutes, once again screwing us up. We had to catch buses a few times since their promised transportation fell thru.

Now, location was good, I agree. However, I also agree that it was not even close to 5 stars. The place was a wreck on the inside. The rooms look like some cheap $50/night room in Myrtle Beach or something. The bath tub looked absolutely disgusting. I was like nooooo way! Thank goodness I brought my own Clorox wipes!! Not to mention, the overhead light was out.
The pool was tiny. I thought for sure there was another pool or two somewhere else since that one was so small, but there wasn't. Well, the sister resorts (that were included in the package) had pools.. but wait.. they were all closed! So yes, we were stuck with a tiny pool!
They said irons and ironing boards were in all the rooms.. NOT OURS.. and when we called to ask for one.. they said they would bring it right up but we waited 30 mins and it never came, so we left with wrinkled clothes. Then, when we returned, they had laid it on a table and knocked over a strawberry daq. all over our beach bag and the clothes inside. There was a sticky mess down the side of the counter and in the floor, but the cup was magically gone. I remembered leaving it on the table, so I knew that was exactly what the pretty pinkish red mess was!

And yes, the 90 minute presentation took us like 7 hours LITERALLY!!! Allll day long.. we started at 8:30 a.m. and did not end until after 3:30. Once we said no, we were hassled by 3 other people. Everyone was giving us different figures and it was so confusing, but we were like NO NO NO and they keep asking you questions and will not take no for an answer! Finally, I told them if they wanted to buy it for me, I always like presents, if not have a good life but their 90 minutes was long gone and I wanted to get to the beach and enjoy the sun.

I am pretty sure there are a few more things that I could go on and on about.. like the food being less than appetizing.. but I will stop there. You get the picture.. these people lie and scam you over and over.. it is not an awesome resort at all, do not waste your money to get lied to, cheated, and ripped off!!!

We purchased a Sams Club vacation package that was upgraded to the Royal Sunset from our original choice, due to the hotels closing in response to the Flu Hype. Here is our opinion of our stay.
The Good Points Location: The location is on the Northeast end of the strip. Your within walking distance of several clubs and the beach is OK for the NE end. Directly outside you can take the city bus (15 pesos for two) and quickly be at any location from the south end of the strip to Wal Mart in downtown. There is no need for a cab. The beach has about 20 meters of sand from hotel to the water w/ a moderate surf.
The bad points, the quality of facilities: The room was a standard hotel room, clean, had a kitchenette and had a small balcony. The hotel is showing its age and the pool is small by Cancun standards. Several rooms had broken AC and we had fun playing the game of which single icemaker in the hotel is working tonight. It advertises itself as a 5-star facility and in reality it is a 3-star. The Holiday Inn (500 meters North) was better and much cheaper. Do not upgrade to the all-inclusive as those that did kept inside the hotel. The "spa" at the Sunset did recieve raves from another group that we traveled with. You're in the a great location w/ fantastic local and chain resturants. Why stick yourself w/ an all inclusive bill for lackluster food and drinks. For the extra $60 (US) charge for all inclusive (per person) you could dine very well in Cancun. Also the spa is not part of the all-inclusive package nor is trips though they give trips and spa packets as incentives to do the timeshare thing.
The Ugly, Time Share hell: Though the package from Sams stated that we were not obligated to do the Timeshare sales pitch, they tried to force the guests at check-in to attend their "90 min" sales pitch. We attended in order to recieve a gift and regretted it.
It turned out to be a 4 hour tour of a staged resort apart from the Royal Sunset. They even had staff members acting as guests to impress the tours. The basic thing is that the timeshare costs and maintence fees are far above what one would pay for a real 5-star resort w/ airfare and extras. The Cheapest plan was $600 a month and $800 a year (maintenance fee) which equals $4400 a year with a host of extras tagged on. This for 1 week of staying in Cancun a year with no assurance of getting the package you bought. For that amount you could go 1st class anywhere globally, with no obligation to one of the shadiest industries around. The salesmen were friendly until they realized that we decided not to buy into the scheme, then they became rude and threatning. They also stated that if we did not buy a timeshare they would add charges to our stay. Luckly we bought from Sams Club but I'm still watching the Credit Card statement closely.
Since we had no charges from the hotel, they refused to give me a printed receipt, yet I did see it whie the clerk was helping another customer. The Resort would normally charge appx $700 a night for room and all-inclusive. At the same time and dates the Hyatt was charging $185 for a far superior accomindations. If one is staying at this hotel (its really a hotel, not a resort) do not fall for the timeshare scam otherwise you will be stuck in these second class facilities while paying for a premium vacation.

Amazing view of the beach from the rooms facing the beach! Even from the bathroom! The colour of that sea is indescribably beautiful. Smallish beach but still plenty of lovely turquoise waves crashing to shore, white and sandy, with tiny portions of crushed seashells mixed in (which made it a little rough under bare feet). Lovely large pool and patio area.

Food was pretty good at the buffet - certainly there was plenty of choice. What you have to try is the cocktails from the bar in reception! I had the best Cosmopolitan and my husband had the best Vodka Martini ever! Even my 9-yr-old daughter had a fantastic non-alcoholic banana daiquiri!

All the staff were helpful and attentive, the bathrooms were sparkling clean and the tropical fish tank a relaxing pleasure to watch while sipping above-mentioned cocktails!

Even the timeshare sales staff were very polite - persuasive and persistent - but very friendly and courteous. Very worthwhile a visit.

After reading all the negative reviews about the Royal Sunset, we were a little worried about going. However, we were quiet surprised when we arrived.

Overall, the hotel is very good. We loved the beach and the pool area. My son and husband had a ball - we live in Jersey and the beaches are over crowded so it was nice to have our own space on the beach. The staff was outstanding and did everything they could to meet our needs. The hotel is also in a great location within walking distance of several restaurants. The only real downside to the hotel, is their buffet. The food wasn't great.

All in all, the hotel is very good and we would definitely go back

My stay in Cancun was wonderful. We stayed at the Royal Resorts and found everyone to be accommodating and helpful. Why the poor rating. Well when we got off the plane and heading to the shuttle we had reserved we were approached by a nice young man. I indicated that I was looking for Thomas Moore Travel. He offered to take us there. Unfortunately that is when things began to go south! He did a detour and my girlfriend and I were given a spiel on listening to a 90 minute talk, free this , free that yada yada yada,. My friend thought we should do it. The next morning this great guy picks us up and we go to the Sunset Group. After a couple of hours I had had it and my friend is asking all sorts of questions. I left she stayed and bought a Timeshare! In the end she wanted out and they (Sunset Group) treated us with disrespect and intimidation. They used an illegal document to pressure her into a similar deal but on a smaller scale. Fortunately we did some quick research and used the Mexican Consumer Protection Agency. It involved two or three days of our vacation and additional charges for her to stay an extra day. This organization is not reputable and preys on women. There were tons of red flags that both of ignored. Buyer be ware of the Sunset Group!
