I stayed at the Royal Sunset and this is definitely going to be my go to vacation spot in Cancun. In fact it's THE reason why i'd ever go to Cancun again. I plan to visit every place on this earth if the money and time is right, God willing, but Cancun, i'd visit again. Royal Sunset has made it a pleasurable experience. Everything was great from the food, the breathtaking beach and the highly maintained hotel.

We have been timeshare owners for three years now and surprisingly have had great visits each year. This year was the best so far. We took another couple with us (we had a 2 bedroom suite unit) and they had a great time also. The service, food and shows were great! If you decide to do their formal dinner be sure to ask for the Mayan coffee at the end of your meal ! They do a flaming preparation of a coffee drink that will amaze.

One of the other great things about this facility is that it's a short walk to all the nightlife.

We stayed here through a package from Sam's Club. We were moved from the Ocean Spa to this place. Nice enough facility, rooms are decent, excellent showers and towels. We went with the all-inclusive, but that was not as great of a deal as we first thought. The breakfast buffets were pretty good, but lunch and dinners were mediocre at best. Some of the most bland Mexican food I have ever had. The only ice cream they had was coconut (not bad) and strawberry. The desserts also quite watery from sitting out and pretty bland also. And not real kid friendly on their menu. The hot dogs from the poolside grill was the kids staple. Also kind of odd hours for their serving times. The nightly entertainment is not suited towards young kids either. And it appears to be the same dance numbers to different bad music -- think of a cheesy Las Vegas stage show way way way off the strip. Also, I learned that a boogie board is not considered a "watercraft" and therefore not included in the all-inclusive. They charge $10 (cash only - no room charge) to rent a $5.00 boogie board. Even having the kids paint these ceramic pieces could not be charged to the room and was cash only. Wait staff was overall pretty good (Angel is tops). Their beach is really nice. Their drinks are really really weak. We got no pressure to take a sales tour -- which was nice. Overall the all-inclusive was over-priced for poor food and few services. Out first room was on the first floor right by a restaurant and a great view of the drop-off lane for the hotel and had a very strong cleanser smell. We got our room changed, but it took almost a full day for the AC to dry out the room. This was our first visit to Cancun. The water is stunning. We would go back again, but not stay at any of the hotels in this chain.

After reading some of these reviews, I'm begining to wonder if we stayed at the same place. We got the trip through Sam's club. We received several phone calls before we left letting us know of the changes that were made and the change of hotel to the Sunset Royal. Whenever I emailed with a question I always got a quick response back.
We were greeted at the airport ontime with the driver waiting for us. The checkin was quick and although it was not check in time, they allowed us to change and hang out at the beach. We turned down the time share presentation, as we had already heard bad things about it. The hotel staff did not pressure us at all. We booked our excursions through a company outside the hotel and got really good deals. Yes, everyone wanted us to do the timeshare tours on the island, but we nicely refused. No pressure.
We felt the rooms were very nice. Maybe not 5 star, but still quite nice. We did have iron, ironing board, etc. in the room. The room was extremely clean and we were well taken care of. We did not do the all inclusive as we knew we would be out and about and would want to eat where ever we were at the time. And we are glad. ( Had a much better time for that extra $100 each per day.)
We loved the beach area. My daughter had a great time and it was beautiful. Most of the time there were only a few people there. So we felt it was very private. The pool was not the largest, but it was stilll a good size pool. Very clean and refreshing.
We only saw 2 tourists with face masks, no one else even seemed to look like they were concerned with the swine flu. We definitely were not worried. We went and had a great time and came home with no illnesses. Just really tan and alot of sun!
We are not drinking and partying people, so I can't tell you about the bars or night life. We did walk several times to the restraunts and shopping that were close by. We had no problems with the buses which came by all the time. And Taxis' were easy to come by.
Cancun right now is very empty! At most restraunts there were only about 5 - 10 other couples/families. So we were very well taken care of. The shopping was wonderful. The people are desperate to make a sale and will make really good offers. If you have a trip planned, this is defnitely the time to go. You'll never get a more private trip to Cancun!
On our flight home, the shuttle was ontime (actually early) to pick us up. The airport was pretty empty. We had to go through a health screening (just like we did when we arrived), just filling out a short health form, and a temperature check. We saw no one with masks on at the airport or on the airplane. (except the health authorities). Just lots of people using their hand sanitizer.
We hope anyone who goes, has the same experience we had. If you are expecting a 5 star hotel, it definitely is not as far as the rooms go. But for cleanliness, and service, we could not have asked for anything better. We have been on cruises, been to Cozumel, and Bahamas, and we feel Cancun ranks right up there with the rest! Enjoy your trip!!!

I am in the same position as the person who commented before me. My friend and I got to Cancun and waited on our shuttle for 20 minutes. It was too hot to just be standing outside in the 98 degree heat with jet lag and our American, long pant long sleeve clothes on. (When we got on the plane it was not even 50 degrees) The driver was extremely late, although the guy with our sign and our plane were on time. Then he told us he was taking us to Sunset Royal, instead of the Ocean Spa, where we were scheduled to stay. Upon arrival we found out that all 3 of the other resorts were closed and that was the only one open so we had to stay there. It would have been nice to have received a phone call letting us know before we traveled there. We paid an extra $99 a night for all inclusive.. and we were promised all meals and drinks at ANY restuarant or bar in ANY of the hotels.. well since they were closed we had to choose between the two restuarants at the Royal. Then we were also informed that we could only eat Italian one night and lobster one night. Neither of us wanted lobster and they told us too bad, we could not trade it. So we were screwed out of at least 4 restuarants we had to choose from when we booked and the "eat and drink anything for free" phrase was a con. Not to mention when we signed up over the phone for all inclusive, several months earlier, we were promised a "yacht cruise" and "a day at the spa" HA who were we kidding. We did not get any type of cruise.. and our day at the spa was at our expense. They gave us a coupon for $30 off select services. The cheapest thing was $60, so we would still have to pay $30 (in U.S. dollars), but those things were already on sale for $25. Therefore, any normal customer would receive it cheaper than I could with my coupon, because you could not use a coupon on the special. It was a total rip off. We complained about it and eventually paid $24 a person plus tip for a couple of things they had on sale. While we were there, they opened up the Sunset Lagoon. There was supposed to be a boat running from one hotel to the other every 20 minutes. Somehow, they changed that to every 30 minutes. And one time we went to catch it and they said it stopped running at 4 p.m. Also, the shuttle van that goes from Lagoon to Royal changed their schedule to every one or two hours instead of 30 minutes, once again screwing us up. We had to catch buses a few times since their promised transportation fell thru.

Now, location was good, I agree. However, I also agree that it was not even close to 5 stars. The place was a wreck on the inside. The rooms look like some cheap $50/night room in Myrtle Beach or something. The bath tub looked absolutely disgusting. I was like nooooo way! Thank goodness I brought my own Clorox wipes!! Not to mention, the overhead light was out.
The pool was tiny. I thought for sure there was another pool or two somewhere else since that one was so small, but there wasn't. Well, the sister resorts (that were included in the package) had pools.. but wait.. they were all closed! So yes, we were stuck with a tiny pool!
They said irons and ironing boards were in all the rooms.. NOT OURS.. and when we called to ask for one.. they said they would bring it right up but we waited 30 mins and it never came, so we left with wrinkled clothes. Then, when we returned, they had laid it on a table and knocked over a strawberry daq. all over our beach bag and the clothes inside. There was a sticky mess down the side of the counter and in the floor, but the cup was magically gone. I remembered leaving it on the table, so I knew that was exactly what the pretty pinkish red mess was!

And yes, the 90 minute presentation took us like 7 hours LITERALLY!!! Allll day long.. we started at 8:30 a.m. and did not end until after 3:30. Once we said no, we were hassled by 3 other people. Everyone was giving us different figures and it was so confusing, but we were like NO NO NO and they keep asking you questions and will not take no for an answer! Finally, I told them if they wanted to buy it for me, I always like presents, if not have a good life but their 90 minutes was long gone and I wanted to get to the beach and enjoy the sun.

I am pretty sure there are a few more things that I could go on and on about.. like the food being less than appetizing.. but I will stop there. You get the picture.. these people lie and scam you over and over.. it is not an awesome resort at all, do not waste your money to get lied to, cheated, and ripped off!!!
