Had to spend one night in Cancun before flying out the next day. Hotel Kin Mayab was the only lodging that I did not book myself online. I was apprehensive about staying in a place close to the bus station without doing any homework whatsoever. It was booked by the travel agent who also booked my trip to Chitzen Itza from Merida.
The hotel was within sight of the bus station, across Avenue Tulum. Was able to check in without paying, I had to run out to change money first. Not a problem as there were money changing booths within a block, open at night.
Good first impression walking in. Hotel Kin Mayab is not in a very new building, has some character. It is set back from the street with the entryway between a couple store fronts. To the left is the check-in counter, to the right is a small seating area, computer terminal to the side. There is an enclosed courtyard with a small restaurant further to the right, separated by an open stairway.
Suitcase was carried upstairs for me, air condition and fan turned up by a young man. Very clean room, good size, lots of lighting options.
Street noise is loud but my room was on the second floor on the back side of the building, quiet. The man at the front desk was able to recommend a restaurant but I took a walk down Avenue Tulum and found plenty of places to eat.
Had breakfast in the hotel in the courtyard. Very nice, $7 for coffee, scrambled eggs, homefries, toast, refried beans, fresh fruit. Large screen tv turned on to the news. Not obtrusive. Others eating there were a Mexican businesswoman working on her laptop and an older man who looked like he had breakfast every day there. Service was excellent.
Check-out time is 1:00. Had time to take a quick bus ride and go for a last swim on the public beach. The waiter from breakfast offered to wheel my bag to the bus station, asked about where to buy my ticket to the airport for me. He thought I might be able to check in my bag early but that wasn't possible. He inquired at the ticket counter about the next bus and all I had to do was pay. I tipped him but I think he would have helped me regardless. By then I had two bags with me besides my suitcase so the help was heaven-sent. The hotel was way too close to take a taxi but too far for me to carry everything and not melt in the heat.
$45 at Kin Mayab paid for two double beds in a cool, spacious, quiet, super clean room, no cigarette smell or musty odor. Didn't use the balcony with chair and table. Small openable window in the shower was nice.
On the opposite side of the bus station from Hotel Kin Mayab, there is a large supermarket to buy all sorts of food. One can catch the hotel zone bus (R-1) just a half block from the hotel on Ave. Tulum for 6 or 7 pesos. I felt safe walking in the area at night. Later I read that there is another building to the hotel and a swimming pool as well.
