We read mixed reviews about the Coral Mar before we left, so weren't sure of what to expect. We found the overall experience very satisfying. The staff was extremely helpful throughout our stay. The rooms were simple, but clean with only an annoying noise in the refrigerator and a leaky coffee pot to complain at all about. The place is away from the beach on a dead end road (Pok-ta-pok), so it was very quiet and relaxing. The resort had a lovely pool and bar/restaurant area (pool a little cold and the bar/restaurant was a great place to hang out for conversation. The staff has developed a very useful orientation program that some people may shy away from because they are worried about being sold something. But this was not the case, and we received a very helpful introduction to the area. The tours that can be booked at the resort are excellent by all accounts and the tour staff is very skilled.
Cancun would not be our favorite place to return to. There is much to see and do, It was easy to get around by city bus, taxi, tour, etc., but everything is so spread out you spend a lot of time traveling to get to your local destination. Also, the beaches are not easily accessible with few restaurants and bars on them that are not directly related to the large hotels which tend to be a barrier to the beach access. Isla Mujeres Playa del Carmen, and Puerto Morales are good beach alternatives which do take a bit of effort to get to.

  • Liked — seclusion, comfort, quiet
  • Disliked — distance from main street (about 20 minute walk)

The Coral Mar was my 1st time share exchange and It was pretty descent. A hot tub would have made the property above average, but the pool was NICE. Located off the beaten track it was secluded and calm when ever we returned from the hotel zone or downtown. The Lagoon is pretty though not for swimming and beaches are close by. Lounge chairs by the pool and over looking the lagoon make it all ok. The units were clean and cleaned daily. The Restaurant on site was good and had a kick ass Happy Hour drink special twice a day. The staff at the front desk were ok, not great, a little shady when it came to day trips always had an angle or someplace to promote, that when you got there was just a tired lil shop or whatever. Plus they made check in very unpleasant. So boo to the check in staff and Yea to the rest of the staff who were all very nice and attentive.

Do not book excursions thru the onsite place they are over priced and they harrass you if you don't book which is not cool. Do rent a car and explore on your own. Driving in Mexico is like driving in LA so you gotta be up to the task. But it will save you in taxi cost our rental was $10 a day and it allows you freedom to explore the natural wonders of Cancun. Not to mention air conditioning.

Speaking of which the rooms are air condtioned but each had it's own personality disfunction, tepid air, ugh. Overall I enjoyed the Coral Mar but if and when I get back to Cancun I will exchange for a place with better amenities and no evil check in staff.

We booked the Coral Mar through RCI and were rather disappointed with the accommodations. The unit was clean but somewhat dated and spartan. We were willing to live with musty smell, the ants, and the few dead cockroaches we encountered, but the nasty odor in the bathroom off the master bedroom persisted throughout the week despite our asking the front desk to look into it. The only solution was to keep the door closed. The Coral Mar is quiet and off the beaten track, which was great for us. After seeing the frenetic pace on the hotel strip we didn’t mind shelling out for cab fare. The lack of beach access, however, was a definite downer. The beaches are public, but the lounge chairs belong to the resorts and security guards make sure only resort patrons use them. The pool was fine and the restaurant food was very good. The tours we booked through the onsite travel agency were worthwhile, but stay away from the timeshare people who hover around the orientation session. The “90 minute presentation” stretched into 3 ½ hours. We did get $150 off our tours and a free meal, but trust me they came at a price. There is no onsite laundry and no Laundromats nearby, but you can get your laundry washed, dried and folded for about the same price you’d pay at a coin-op 15 minutes walk down the road. The turnaround time is about 24 hours.

  • Liked — It's quiet
  • Disliked — The smell and our view of the back of the restaurant

Just back from an awesome adventure in the Mayan-rich culture of the Yucatan Peninsula of Cancun. My buddies and spent 8 days in the area and enjoyed every minute of it. We used a timeshare for the latter part of our stay, but we took advantage of the excursions available.
On our first night, we spent it in Downtown Cancun at a little spot called Margarita Hotel and we loved it. It was completely surrounded by great restaurants and bars. Just the scene we were looking for.

The following day, we checked in to our timeshare location in Cancun, called Coral Mar. Its a nice place if you're into getting away from the chaos of tourism of the Cancun Hotel Zone (the Strip)... the rooms, being all condos, were excellent and fully air-conditioned. The pool and amenities were great and the view was a pleasure. Make sure your try the restaurant, the food was delicious...
We took a night out to the Strip and did the Party Hopper, a definite thumbs up for the party-goer. You hit 4 happening clubs/bars in one night.... if you can handle the drinking and music, then this is for you... I enjoyed it.
The following day we hit Tulum. The place doesn't have much to offer as far as miraculous, but the beach and view of the beach is to die for. So don't go for the ruins, they aren't preserved at all, but the beach is gorgeous. On our way back to Cancun, we stopped at a Cenote. There are many in and around the road and they are receommended. it was fun.
The follwoing day we went to Isla Mujeres on a Fun-Day Tour. They provided the ferry ride ($27 per person) and buffet lunch. The spot near the port was delightful, as I practically fell asleep the whole day on it. But there are excursions to do that are very inexpensive.
The following day, we went to Chichen Itza. If you're into Mayan ruins, then that's your spot. The ruins were awesome. The location is just gorgeous, very luxuric resort on the premises. A definite have-to-see place. Before you head back, make sure you hit the Cenote at the property. it's called Ikkil.... you won't regret it.
The next day we went to Cozumel, part of Aquaworld's tour. They provided the bus ride from Cancun and ferry ride to Cozumel. We rented scooters and explored the island. It was beautiful.... you should do it.... no regrets, just memories.
Then the last full day, we hit Xcaret. An Eco-park. If you like snorkeling, then this is your place. They have underwater rivers in caves that are fun to follow along. The park also offers beachfront accomodations and music at night. Make sure you eat at their buffet restaurant Laguna... its deliciously great.
The last day, we all slepted in before hitting our flight at 4pm... heading back to LA.

The trip was an excellent experience and I receommend it for everyone.... I did the partying, excavating, exploring, snorkeling, beach bumming and of course plenty of drinking.... so I did the whole package...
Oh yeah, and we rented a minivan, so take advantage of that. The driving is simple and you cannot get lost.... you save from paying them expensive taxi drivers.

I know that there's still plenty to do there, so I know I'll be back there.

  • Liked — The spacious rooms and helpful staff.
  • Disliked — The location at the end of the cul-de-sac street. Taxis charge a lot, only one restaurant. No beach.

Coral Mar is a wonderful isolated condominium. It is at the very end of the Pok-Ta-Pok peninsula facing the lagoon. I read other reviews about the scent coming from the lagoon, we stayed there for 2 weeks in March and never experienced any smell. However, it is very windy, all the time! so prepare yourself.
The accomodations are wonderful, we had room #42 which is a bit isolated from the pool and that suited us just fine as we travelled with 2 small children.
We rented a car through expedia for the entire 2 weeks. I was not charged any extra insurance cost or additional miles or gas or anything. It was through Hertz which is right outside of the airport and the rate was amazingly cheap. I highly recomend you do this.
We visited various parks:

Xel-Ha: If you are into snorkeling this is a must. It is absolutely amazing the sea life you will see in this park. Downside is that at 5 p.m everything closes and it's a 2 hour drive to get there.

Xcaret: Absolutely amazing. If you have to choose then I would pick this one over Xel-Ha. It has so many attractions that we did not see the entire park when we were there. There is a night show that is a definite MUST.

Chichen-Itza: Espectacular. There is a well (Cenote) right outside of Chichen-Itza to go swimming in fresh water. The most impressive place I have ever swam in.

Anyway, Coral Mar was wonderful, the rooms nice a clean, the people working there very accomodating. There is a PC with internet connection $2 per hour. There is sand and palm trees and my kids spent hours playing in the sand. There is no ocean, but that's okay. If you have a car you can visit a hotel during the day. If so, I recomend Fiesta Americana. They will not kick you out and the ocean is calmer than Mayan Riviera hotels.

Have fun! I wish I was there again.
