Just back from an awesome adventure in the Mayan-rich culture of the Yucatan Peninsula of Cancun. My buddies and spent 8 days in the area and enjoyed every minute of it. We used a timeshare for the latter part of our stay, but we took advantage of the excursions available.
On our first night, we spent it in Downtown Cancun at a little spot called Margarita Hotel and we loved it. It was completely surrounded by great restaurants and bars. Just the scene we were looking for.
The following day, we checked in to our timeshare location in Cancun, called Coral Mar. Its a nice place if you're into getting away from the chaos of tourism of the Cancun Hotel Zone (the Strip)... the rooms, being all condos, were excellent and fully air-conditioned. The pool and amenities were great and the view was a pleasure. Make sure your try the restaurant, the food was delicious...
We took a night out to the Strip and did the Party Hopper, a definite thumbs up for the party-goer. You hit 4 happening clubs/bars in one night.... if you can handle the drinking and music, then this is for you... I enjoyed it.
The following day we hit Tulum. The place doesn't have much to offer as far as miraculous, but the beach and view of the beach is to die for. So don't go for the ruins, they aren't preserved at all, but the beach is gorgeous. On our way back to Cancun, we stopped at a Cenote. There are many in and around the road and they are receommended. it was fun.
The follwoing day we went to Isla Mujeres on a Fun-Day Tour. They provided the ferry ride ($27 per person) and buffet lunch. The spot near the port was delightful, as I practically fell asleep the whole day on it. But there are excursions to do that are very inexpensive.
The following day, we went to Chichen Itza. If you're into Mayan ruins, then that's your spot. The ruins were awesome. The location is just gorgeous, very luxuric resort on the premises. A definite have-to-see place. Before you head back, make sure you hit the Cenote at the property. it's called Ikkil.... you won't regret it.
The next day we went to Cozumel, part of Aquaworld's tour. They provided the bus ride from Cancun and ferry ride to Cozumel. We rented scooters and explored the island. It was beautiful.... you should do it.... no regrets, just memories.
Then the last full day, we hit Xcaret. An Eco-park. If you like snorkeling, then this is your place. They have underwater rivers in caves that are fun to follow along. The park also offers beachfront accomodations and music at night. Make sure you eat at their buffet restaurant Laguna... its deliciously great.
The last day, we all slepted in before hitting our flight at 4pm... heading back to LA.
The trip was an excellent experience and I receommend it for everyone.... I did the partying, excavating, exploring, snorkeling, beach bumming and of course plenty of drinking.... so I did the whole package...
Oh yeah, and we rented a minivan, so take advantage of that. The driving is simple and you cannot get lost.... you save from paying them expensive taxi drivers.
I know that there's still plenty to do there, so I know I'll be back there.
