We have been going to Desire since the year they first opened. We have made 8 trips and have noticed many changes over the years. The biggest change by far has been the price. We know that what Desire has to offer is unique, but we feel that it is no longer worth the price. They seem to have the frame of mind that they will keep upping the price until people stop coming........for us, we have reached that point. We are not going to bash the resort and make many false claims to make them look bad. We just feel that for the prices they are charging, they have done little to "upgrade" the experience. Some of the problems we have in paying $600/nt for an ocean view room is that the bottom floors aren't really ocean view at all.......they are blocked by the beach beds. Thankfully we knew this from previous trips and requested and 2nd floor room. Another problem we have is that the electricity has been and issue our last few trips. No power in the room..having to wait an hour, 2 hours, 3 hours for it to come back on. Low water pressure in the rooms with inconsistent hot water. The pool heater is used sparingly and the water is cold....leaving the pool with no one in it. The jacuzzi was also cold 2 of the nights we were there...maintainence issues we were told. These are not the types of problems you should be having when paying these rates. The food is fine...not great, not horrible...average. The one complaint is they have change the poolside grill. The food is invaded by flies and they seem to have little concern about it. Most grilled items are not cooked to order, instead are re-heated from a pan.
As if paying $600/nt for a room isn't bad enough, they want to nickel and dime you for things like wireless internet ($15) & to reserve a beach bed ($20/day). The one thing that hasn't changed is the great service. The waiters and bartenders are awesome, some of the best we've had. They do anything within their power to accommodate your needs.
With the opening of the new secrets resort down the beach, we have noticed a lot more foot traffic on the beach.....including families with small children. This kind of takes some of the quaint, private experience away from the beach. There is also a lack of loungers available on the beach.....they used to have plenty but now they do not have enough. This was a big complaint mentioned by many people our last trip.
We have many great memories from our trips to Desire, but we feel that the resort is just not worth the price. It is maybe a 3+ star resort charging 5+ star prices. We have seen the resort grow from infancy...through the re building after the hurricanes...to the present. We feel the resort has just gotten "too big for it's britches"
