Family holiday to the Riu Cancun. Myself (27) my partner (23) and my partents (64 & 65) spent 12 nights (21st October to 3rd November).

Room
Given a room on the 6th floor of the annex building. Nice and spacious, good in room bar with optics and soft drinks. Two big double beds. Reasonable air conditioning and no "funny" smell has some have reported. View from the balcony was beautiful, looked right out onto beach and the sea. View of the pool was restricted slightly by the ledge, we wearnt botherd though as didnt spend days looking from our balcony at the pool!

If you want a sleep in after a late night then the DJ around the pool is screaming down the microphone at 9.30 in the morning so sleep on the beach instead!.

Food
Excellent. Don Juan (main buffet) provides breakfast, lunch and dinner. Wide range of styles and types of food to suit most tastes.

La Mission (buffet/snacks) provides breakfast and then lunch/snacks to 6pm ish and then becomes the steak resturant. Catering for simpler tastes provides burgers, chips, chicken nuggets, pizza, battered fish etc. Very nice for those mid-afternoon munchies. Steak resturant was excellent, good selection of steaks and accompaning foods (veg, baked potatoes etc).

Japannese Resturant. Dinner only. Dined here twice during stay, it is truly excellent, easily the best resturant at the hotel. I would recommend trying it even if your not 'too sure'. Its not just sushi. Provides some excellent main meals for simpler tastes including chicken and steak with and without the japanese style sauces. I would highly reccomend a couple of jugs of the hot Sake!!!

Brazillian Resturant. Dinner only. Bit of a misleading name, it should really be the south/latin american resturant. You get to try a bit of various dishes brought to your table, including Argentinian sausage, variety of pork, beef and chicken.

Pool/Beach

Three pools plus a small kids pool. All very nice. Liked the pool bar and pool.

The beach was not at all what I expected and was very different (much smaller) than the photos. Still very nice though.

Agree with previous posts that design of hotel means that majority of pool/beach is in the shade come 3pm. There is a large sun terrace on top of the annex though which is always in the sun (unless its night of course!).

Got 12 nights All inclusive for £960 per room. Booked flights seperate. Message me for name of tour operator if interested.

My wife and I stayed for 5 nights and it's what we expected. RUI Cancun is one of the least expensive all inclusive resorts in Cancun and we expected a 3* to 4* star resort and that's what we got. I think you would have to spend a fair amount more (30-50%) to actually find a nicer place. We also chose this resort because it's compact and you can get anywhere in just a few minutes.

Pros:
Value: Try to find a better place for the money.

Location: Easy walk to the main clubs and several of the better restaurants.

Service: I have absolutely no complaints about the service we received. The bars were adequately staffed and I rarely waited more than a few seconds (Sandals Resorts should try this sometime). Everyone we met was friendly, smiling, helpful, etc.
It was my wifes birthday and I didn't say a word but they must have noticed from our registration card. They decorated the room with balloons and left some candy and some towel art on the bed.

Food Selection: Always plently to choose from and the quality was average to good. I enjoyed breakfast the most; omelets, fresh fruit and juice. Food is available 24/7 so there is no excuse for going hungry.

View: I think nearly every room has an ocean view. We were in 630 and had a nice view but the best views would have been from 620-625 (720-725, 820-825, etc).

Animacion Team: There is always something to do and the team does a good job of getting people involved, however if you're not interested they will leave you alone.

Pools: Infinity pools are nice and there are several pools so you can hang out in a different place each day.

Cons: Beach was in bad shape. The staff (along with guests) said it was due to storms in the Carribbean. They said it was about 30 to 50% of it's normal size. The water was also very rough and the wind was relentless. There is still plently of beach area at one end so if you must be on the beach don't worry there's still enough of it left. I attached a photos of the narrow area, by the time we left it was even smaller and almost every tiki umbrella had fallen.
I can't fault them too much as guest at other resorts in Cancun and Riviera Maya indicated their resorts had similar beach issues and the weather was out of their control

Pools:Due to time change and placement of pools they started getting shade about 1:00 and were in full shade by 3:00. If you wanted more sun you could move out to the far corner of the beach and get sun until about 4:00.
The infinity pool was absolutely freezing, the others were a little bit better.

Bed: Request a mattress pad and you'll survive.

Tip: Bring Febreeze or another fabric freshner for your clothing and room (bed).

I probably won't be back but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this resort to others looking for a clean place with good service.

My husband and I stayed at the Riu Cancun from October 19-26. We had the time of our lives, it was an amazing experience! We are already booking for next year, same time. It's hard to write a short review, because the place is amazing, but I'll try to keep it as short as possible:

Food:
My husband is a very picky eater, so before we even left home, I was worried that he would have a hard time finding food to eat. I even went to the local wholesale store and bought snacks to take with us, just in case. Having been to Las Vegas several times and endured the horrible buffets there on more than one occasion, we weren't sure what to expect! Well, we had no problem finding things to eat!! We ate at the Don Juan restaurant for breakfast every day. You can get eggs any way you like them, and maybe even some ways that you've never heard of before! There is a large selection, including cold and hot cereal. There is also a huge fresh veggie and fruit bar, as well as a smoothie bar! The fresh donuts are amazing, I highly recommend you try them.....(man, I really wish I had one right now!)......If you have trouble finding something to eat, I think you must have bigger problems, there is more than enough different food here! We ate at the resort every day for 7 days, neither one of us got sick, and my husand also has a very sensitive stomach. Just remember, a tequila back with eveything, will kill anything living in your system! :) The pizza at La Mision is also excellent. Remember, you're in a different country. So, the food might a look a little different than what you're used to, but give it a try, if you don't like it, try something else. Don't just look at it a think "oh, that doesn't look like something I'd eat" and then write a review that says the food was bad. If you didn't try anything, that's your own fault! But if you didn't even try it, you surely can't say that the food is bad!

The Rooms:
The rooms are a bit dated. We stayed in the Annex building (the smaller one) in a Junior Suite. You get a little bit bigger balcony, plus and sunken living room with a couch and a dresser. Otherwise, it's the same. I did like having the bigger balcony tho. We really only slept and showered in our room, otherwise we were at the pool and the beach most of the time. So, I wasn't really overly concerned about the decor in the room. The beds are hard, but to us, they were fine because they're about the same as our bed at home! We slept SO well the whole time we were there! The walls are thin tho, so you might want to keep your "extracirricular noise" to a minimum......a word of advice: don't leave your balcony door open at night! There is a sensor on the door so that, when the door is open, it tells the air conditioner to shut off! If you want to watch an American channel, try channel 12, it is a South Florida channel. You can tell what the weather is going to be like by looking at what their weather will be like the next day! The rooms do smell musty, but it is very humid there, so what do you expect! I brought incense with me and it killed the smell pretty quickly! I did not, however see one speck of mold. I think you people smell must and you automatically think it's mold, but there wasn't any mold anywhere that I looked, and I looked for it, just so I could testify after reading so many people say that! I don't see how there could be mold, when there are people constantly cleaning every square inch of this resort! If there was mold, it would definitely be in the shower, and I thoroughly inspected our shower and didn't see anything but a very clean shower!

Pool/Beach:
The activity pool can be very fun. If you don't want to listen to it, you can go over to the Quiet Pool. Contrary to what people say here, the activities only go until about 1:00pm during the day, then the people with the microphones go away. Sure, you can hear people down at the pool bar, but it IS a pool bar, so......that's what happens there. I don't know what the lady was talking about that said she heard loud music until after midnight, the pool closes at 6:00, and they are very adamant about making everyone get out at 6:00 because they start dumping chemicals in the pool. Our room was almost right above the Pacha night clubl and I never even heard the bass from the music.....and we were in our room and sleeping by 11:00 every night except for 2. The beach is very nice! On a couple of days, the ocean was actually warmer than the pool! We got our picture taken with the Photoshop staff that walks around the pool with the birds. They took great pictures and only charge us $20 US for 3 8 x 10's printed on Kodak Extralife paper! They have volleyball and soccer on the beach every day too, lots to do! :)

Service:
Lastly, I must comment on the service. I have never been treated so well anywhere that I have gone! The service is second to none, you ask for something, you get it, fast! Please don't forget to tip the staffl, they do a wonderful job, and they get paid very little. These people make $20/day and always have a smile on their face and are happy to get you anything you ask for. So please, be nice to them, they work very hard, for very little.

Well, that's about it. We can't wait to go back, we will return to the Riu Cancun again and again, for many happy years! :)

We went to the Riu to celebrate our anniversary. The hotel is very nice, the food was great and service excellent BUT we go to Mexico on our anniversary to relax, take naps, listen to the ocean and the Riu is a very party party party place. Our room was close to the outside bar and they played loud music all day untill midnight. We also got blasted out on the beach so we did not have the relaxing time we went for but you live and learn. If you like a drinking, smoking, partying time this is for you. If not, well now you know.

A friend and I both in our early 20’s went to the Riu Cancun from Oct 21-28. We went on this trip looking to party hard and just let loose and have a good time. With that said, we really didn’t care to much about the food, service, mold smells, hard beds, etc… all we wanted to do is party. Ok, with that out of the way, I must warn you that the buffet food was really bad. We couldn’t eat there after the second day(it actually made us sick to think about it). Trust me I’m not a picky eater but I had a hard time finding one good thing to eat. I have been to many AI including Iberostar Quetzal in Playa Del Carmen, Riu Palace Mexico, and Crown Paradise (twice). The Riu Cancun had the worst food of them all. The rooms were nice no complaints but the beds were hard. They will refill the fridge with beer/water/soda when ever you want just call the front desk. Location is the best in Cancun, walking distance to most major clubs and bars. The sports bar was good 24hr drinks and hot dogs/ hamburgers/nachos (not very good). We even got a few games of beer pong going in the sports bar (bring your own cups and balls). The pools were OK kind of small for a 700 room facility. The beach was nice (vendors were constantly trying to sell us drug on the beach). The drinks were OK, don’t expect top shelf liquors but they had Smirnoff, El Jimmador tequila, and Findlanda vodka. TIP: you have to ask for the good stuff or they will give the poor quality liquors (a $ tip doesn’t hurt either). This is a big hotel and a lot of people and activities going on. For what we paid ($850 R/T air from Boston and 7 nights hotel) were couldn’t go wrong. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who really doesn’t care about details such as food, beds, and service. If you’re looking to hit all the bar/clubs and just party this hotel is great. But if you’re looking for a more relaxing carefree vacation I would stay else where. If you have any further questions just let me know. Good luck

P.S Make sure you have a Siki Bomb in the Japanese restaurant.. Just ask..... they will know what to do....
