We traveled to Cancun, from Minneapolis, MN to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. I was a little nervous staying at such a HUGE hotel in that we would be treated as just another head of cattle. But, to our pleasant surprise, everyone there made an effort to make us feel special. The room was very clean. We had a beautiful view of the ocean. And the food was pretty good. A word about the sit down restaraunts...don't get your hopes up that the food will be better than the buffet...at both the Japanese and the Brazilian dining establishments, our food was not nearly as good as the buffet (salmon overcooked) All inclusive alcohol is nice, but don't look for "top-shelf" stuff. Stick with the Margarita's -- they are very good. All-in-all, there were no surprises. However, if you are not used to sunbathing among women who are topless, be forewarned. It happens at the Riu Cancun AND some of it ain't so pretty (this hotel attracts European clientele of all shapes and sizes and we Americans look like prudes)

We booked through Apple Vacations and flew USA 3000 and EVERYTHING was perfect from the time we arrived to the time we returned was perfect. Apple Vacation Guides met us after we picked up our luggage which came down so fast! The Riu Cancun was the best hotel to stay at. The rooms were great (the beds are hard) so take a down comforter as your one of your check-in luggage. We purchased 3 excursions from Apple Vacations in the hotel. Always buy your excursions from the hotel or your travel agent. (1) Chitzen Itza Maya Ruins (get the delux package $84.00 per + lunch (sit down restrauant & drinks, beer, water, soda) (2) Jungle Tours Speed Boats, 30 miles an hr but so worth the 55.00 per) And the best of all was the Coco Bongo Club for $40.00 per. All liquor is included at this bar 10:30pm-3am. And the shows are FANTASTIC at this club! Dance on the bar and watch your favorite movie stars come to life. Don't do the club the night b4 u leave, you'll regret it (lol)
Food was delicious. Japanese Restrauant is absolutely wonderful. And the Strawberry Fried Ice Cream to die for. This is a reservation only. 6:30pm or 9:30pm DO NOT BE LATE. They lock the door. Don Juan's Restra was soooooooooo good! The service is on point.
All non motorized sports -FREE (sign up by the pool early morning or day b4) Snorkel,Wind Surfing, Sailing. ALL LIQUOR IS FREEEEE in your room and all the bars. Non stop drinking if you want. Everyone speaks english. This hotel really caters to the tourists completely.
TIPS: Bring enough money to tip lightly. Tip your bartender and they are on your heels. We tipped 10.00 first night and it was party on! We tipped 2.00 every night after 10 or 20 drinks. Hotel maid, we tipped 10.00 as we left the resort and 5.00 left in the fridge that was constantly stocked with Corona, water, soda. In your room you have huge bottles of Vodka, Gin, Tequilla, Rum. We tipped every tour guide and each of our personal waiters at our table $3 to 5.00. Oh and we hired the photographer to take special pics for us b4 we left. She charged 100.00 but everyone in our group of six got photos and the original cd. Which came out to less than 20.00 per person in our group. Ask for the jumping pic. It's so funny! All I can say is that this had to be the best vacation we ever took. And we travel alot. But everyone has different opinions, we just loved our stay at the RIU CANCUN. Oh and some have said there was mold, NEVER SEEN ANY! Oct, Nov are great months to travel. No rain when we were there. I hope this helps! :-)

We could not have had a better vacation. There were 8 people in our group. We met another group from Pittsburgh -- 41 folks -- who come to this resort every year. We also met a couple from Chicago who were visiting this resort for the 4th time. The service was unreal. They all work very hard. Everything was always clean. The food was incredible .... buffet food was so good and so different for each meal. Breakfast was the only thing that was the same each day. The entertainment staff did a great job with activities all day long and then entertainment in the evening. We spent a lot of time in the pool bar and it was a blast. The outdoor bar in the evening is the best. Chocolate Marinis -- woo hoo!!! If I had to find one thing to be improved it is the sports bar .... not much character and the food is not that great. But hey .... if u r drunk and it is 2:00 in the morning ... it is better than nothing. The rooms are nice. The beds are a little hard but not the worst I have ever slept on. We will be going back and I highly recommend the Riu.

Two adults and one child (7 years) East Yorkshire.
Returned from Cancun 7th Nov after 2 weeks. This is a great hotel for things to do,despite mixed weather we were never bored in fact there was insufficient time to fit everything in. Yes the hotel is alittle dated and in need of a refurb, the beach has almost disappeared due to the winds and recent hurricane, the pools where alittle too cool due to the time of year and the speciality resturant dining options are limited. However the food provided in the buffet was very good, the service overall was great and the animation team where fantastic they really try to make sure you have a great time. They take those willing and still able in to a different club every night ensuring the best deals views/seats and drinks. If your thing is fun and you enjoy getting involved with activities and dont mind alittle cheesy humour then you will love this place. There are plenty of chill out areas too for a quite drink but the main emphasis here is involvement, either directly or from the side lines and this includes all the kids too. We have never stayed at a Riu and usually opt for the more luxourious and sedate Bahia Principe hotel however have now been converted.
The hotel offers a very good baby sitting facility for $15 US per hour which gave us the opportunity to vist Coco Bongos a must for all over 18s. The Captin Hook trip is a must for those with (and without kids) . The location is better than anyother hotel in the zone., so go and enjoy and dont check for the frayed edges.

the hotel was kind of old. I was really woried when we first got there. No air condioning in the lobby. evey thing seemed really old and run down. But the room was big and after we called and they brought extra padding for the beds it wasn't so bad. The food was just mediocre but the beach was to die for! We've been all up and down the mayan riviera and this was defintely the best beach! White sand and no big rocks to stubb your toes on.if you get a chance defintely go to Margaritaville! That was the best time we had all trip!Great food and great service!
