No doubt the hotel was beautiful, but the front desk always had a attitude, the rooms were so hot they we had to be moved, the the ceiiling fan keep us up all night with the klanging noises, no wake up call almost made us miss a day trip that was prepaid for and the assistant manager Zully Escalona did nothing but lie to us just to calm us down since we were celebrating our 50 birthday and it was one disappointment after another.....Loved Cancun, hated the service and the lack of air conditioning- would never go back!!!!!

Were there June 7-12 for our 30th anniversary and it was just beautiful. The resort is amazing, the beaches very clean, even saw them raking the beach one day. The staff bend over backwards to serve you anyway they can. The ocean is the most beautiful color.. Don't know how anybody could complain about this place. My expectations are pretty high and the Riu Cancun exceeded them. It is def. a 5-star hotel. It's also in a great location with most things within walking distance. The bus also stops right in front of the lobby and you can go anywhere for about .60 cents. Be sure to go to Isla Mujueres by ferry. The water is so clear and shallow, you can walk a long ways out. If you have any questons I would be happy to answer them. E-mail [--]. Wish I was back there right now.

My boyfriend and I went to the Riu Cancun in June for 11 days; we booked the holiday through Thomson in Bluewater who were not very helpful when they cancelled our initial flight. To add to this when we arrived at the airport they did not reserve us a seat on the flight, so we had to wait for an hour for them to sort it! Besides this, when we arrived at Cancun International Airport, the transfer to the hotel was quick, around 20 minutes. When we arrived at the hotel I was extremely pleased, I could not have booked a nicer hotel in a great location.

I thought the rooms were much nicer than the pictures we had seen, they were quite big, we had our own mini-bar with soft drinks and beer, and we also had optics. I asked to have a room on the first floor with a king size bed and that is exactly what we got. The mini-bar got filled up every other day, but if you need more you can just call reception and they get your fridge filled up straight away. The maids clean the room everyday and change the towels and bed sheets; I do recommend you leave a tip (we left 3 dollars over 11 days).

The food was great; there are three restaurants you have to make a reservation for, Brazilian, steak and Japanese. I tried all three and the steak restaurant was the best, there is also a buffet every evening which is fab! The breakfast is great, you have a large variety, I overindulged on the lovely pancakes! I must add the baked beans were NASTY! They destroyed my breakfast on the first day.

The pools are great, although the pool that has a swim up bar, that people urinate in and spill all their drinks in. We used the quite pool which has a hot tub right next to it, the sun would go down on that side around 3pm (which was good for us as it was extremely hot and it was nice to lay in the shade) sometimes we would just go down to the beach where the sun goes down around 6pm.

The hotel and bar staff are extremely friendly but that is because they want to be TIPPED FOR ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING! I did tip them occasionally.

The hotel had entertainment every night; we went to see the Greece show, which was very entertaining. They also have a club on site, which I never managed to make.

There are a few clubs that are local which cost around $40 to get into with drinks included, COCO BONGOS is a must see, i would recommend you book this through Thomson as they take you to 4 clubs (including COCO BONGOS) in one night for $55 including drinks.

We also went swimming with the Dolphins at Wet ‘n’ Wild, which was excellent, we spend a whole day there and had the whole place to ourselves, I recommend you book this before you go as it is much cheaper!!!

My boyfriend and I, had a moonlight massage, hot stones massage and a Swedish massage, all were fantastic but you should sign up for a RIU CLASS CARD at reception(it is FREE)as you receive 15% off and 20% off the merchandise in the hotel shop.

The location is perfect, you a bus ride away from absolutely everywhere! You can get a bus from outside the hotel which comes every 2 minutes. The bus drivers are nice, they will let you know when you have reached your destination (if you ask them to when you get on). If you want to do some shopping I highly recommend the LA ISLA mall, which is 5 minutes on a bus.

It was definitely a great holiday and I would give it 10/10. The whole holiday was perfect and I would not change a thing! I would definitely go again and please do not listen to the critical reviews they are a load of rubbish!!!!

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Riu Cancun from June 10th -17th. As we were leaving I said a vacation is what you make of it. If you wanna complain and be picky, you will not have a good time. I agree, there were downfalls to our hotel, but they were not major where we would complain. During lunch one day, a crazy american lady said she couldn't have her food cooked in any oil and demanded that the chef make her food she can eat. In a place where there are two lunch restaurants with fresh fruit and vegetables and cooking stations I'm sure she didn't need to complain to the chef that she had nothing to eat.

Many people said that you can not get a chair if you are not out there early at 8 am. THIS IS NOT TRUE. Each day I would wake up at 8am, go to breakfast (and not leave a towel on a chair) go back up stairs, watch some tv and then go down at 10:30 or 11. Yes we had to look for available chairs around the activity pool, but there were plenty of free chairs. All we had to do was ask people if anyone was using the emtpy seat next to them. It was not a problem at all. Plus, if you are by the bar the patrons do get a little annoying. The pool is a lot of fun. Each day we were by the activities pool where the great entertainment staff had games and volleyball each day. There are two bars in the pool area; one in the beach restaurant and the other the pool bar (which has a swim up bar but only go in there early in the day cause people sit in there all day and the water gets a little musty). The blended drinks are great although you do have to ask for extra liquor in the drinks. If you are a picky vodka, rum, gin, or anything else drinker this is not the hotel for you. The house vodka is something similar to Gordons vodka, although they do offier Smirnoff and Finlandia Cranberry. Best gin si Beefeater, tequilla is Jose Gold. They do have Kahlua which makes great white russians. And for some reason the bars know how to make great chocolate martinis. I am a Goose drinker and I was not satisfied with the selections. They do shockingly have Jonny Walker black. The bartenders are always friendly and if they know your drink they will refill your drink with out you asking. The waitresses are also very friendly.

There are two buffet restaurants and 3 specialty restaurants. The Japanese place (went there twice) is ok. Other reviews said the food was great but we thought it was just ok. The sushi was good but the rice was almost too sticky. I could tell it was sticking to my teeth easily. The food was plain ( it needs to be seasoned). The deserts were good. Don't try the salmon, it was dry. The steak wasn't bad as well as the chicken skewers. We went there twice on our stay. Another restaurant is a churrascaria where they serve meat on your plate. It was the best. The sausage, chicken, and pork were the best meats. There is a dessert table (but it didn't differ from the buffet dessert). This is the only place that served prosciutto and melon which was by far one of the best things I had at the hotel (plus tons of fresh watermelon!!!) The last restaurant is the steak house. This is the worst place in the whole hotel. The salad, soup and appetizers were good. Not extraordinary but good. the steak was a poor excuse for a steak. It looked like a piece of dry flap meat with (again) no seasoning. We were very dissapointed with that restaurant and didn't go back. The main buffet at dinner was pretty good. Asian night was the best. Lunch at the main restaurant was good also. Breakfast was by far the best meal. Eggs and omelettes to order! Fresh orange juice! There was also a snak bar from 12 - 6 by the pool which offered pretty good food. My boyfriend loved the pizza! The only bad thing about the buffet and the restaurants were the wine selections. It was like drinking flavored water! But it's not like were were expecting anything more.

Our hotel room was on the 12th floor. The view was excellet. I could not have asked for anything more. If the balcony door stays open, the airconditioning shuts off. The beds are not as bad and people claim. I am spoiled with my matress at home but I didn't complain once about the bed. I loved that it was huge and it was like I was sleeping alone in it. The stocked bar was great (PEPSI!!!!) beer, vodka, tequilla etc. My boyfriend got a heat rash and the room vodka definitely helped the pain go away for a little bit... On our 5th day our clothes in our room were a little damp from all the humidity but it did rain on that day also. We did venture out to Riu Palace Las Americas next door and were were glad we chose the Riu Cancun. The setup of the pools was bad and the beach was small.

At our hotel there was also the disco which was a place we only went to once after a couple of drinks. It's the only place opened in the hotel past 1 am. The sports bar only gets a tad busy after 2 am when the disco closes. We are both 25 and 26 and we did not enjoy the "club" if we can even call it that. The shows are pretty good. They are the only form of entertainment at the Hotel. Audience involvement is fun plus they have Karaoke a few nights a week. We did venure out into town to CoCoBongo which was amazing! The show was great and so was the music. It's worth the 50 bucks.

I know this is a lot that I have rambled on but when I was looking at hotels I looked at the reviews here and it helped me with my choice. I hope this review is helpful. The hotel overall is beautiful. The staff is always helpful (it helps if you read their names on the card and speak to them by their first name). I also tipped the people that were great through out the trip. Tips are always appreciated (I'm a waitress myself). The hotel views are stunning and the hotel is a 5 min walk from all the action. This was my second time to the Riu chain (1st time in Riviera Maya) and I would go back again. Our first true vacation together was excellent.

Also, (last thing I promise), some reviews stated that people were robbed from their hotel rooms. I can see how this could happen but there are safes in the rooms which we used each time we left the room. We kept all of our belongings there and nothing ever got stolen. The hotel staff has keys to the rooms, but you just have to be careful to keep all valuables in the safe.

Have a great stay!!!!!

This was my 4th year in the hotel. We absolutely love it here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We come the same time every year and the same hotel every year. We love the staff and they remember us when we come. The only negative thing I could honeslty say about this hotel is, they need more comfortable beds. Now lets be honest, most Cancun trippers know the only thing your bed is for is to pass out from a full day of partying!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I recommend 11days/10 nights, gvies you plenty of time to get it all in!!!!!!!!!! Also, you meet some many peopel from all over the world and make freidns with in mintues of walking into the hotel. So as a frequent stayer, I will advise this hotel to anyone. It has a great location, great staff, great eevrything!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE CANCUN BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
