My wife and I stayed at the RIU Cancun for our 4th time for 9 nights in November of 2008 and will not go back. Let me say that we did have a wonderful time and we love going to Cancun very much, but the RIU has changed over the years. We stayed when the hotel first opened it was just amazing!!! But it has not aged well.
Room---
When we checked in we requested a junior suite in the annex building which they gave us at no extra charge. But the room was on the fifth floor and that floor has a 5 foot high wall with a 3 foot ledge all the way around the balcony. Which gives you a very partial view of the ocean and if you want to see down to the pool or beach you have to stand on a chair to see over. Our blankets and sheets had a very musty order so we asked housekeeping to change them but they acted like they did not understand me. So i went down the hall to linen storage and got a fresh set which was no big deal. Otherwise the room was fine. Fridge stocked and liquor in the cabinet. Bathroom was fine as well. Plenty of towels and AC nice and cold.
On our third night while enjoying the show downstairs my wife wanted to take some pictures so i went back up to our room to get the camera. I noticed that the sliding glass door to our room was open. So when i went to closet it I noticed the chair moved over to the wall ledge of our balcony. and my Ipod case was sitting on the ledge without my ipod. I went back in the room and could not find our camera which was supposed to be in my backpack with my Ipod. Our laptop was tucked away in our luggage so they didn’t take that!! Think god. I went back down stairs and told my wife. When we returned back to our room we called the front desk. They sent up security and they took a report, searched our room and told us that we could follow up with the manager in the morning and that we could go downtown to file a police report they were really trying to be helpful although they seemed a little confused. Kind of like the keystone cops. In the morning the manager sent up a fruit basket with a note to call her to set up a time to meet. We called her that am and went on down. She seemed very concerned and told us that they have had a lot of rooms broken into and that they think that it was a person that would travel form resort to resort posing as a vacationer. She asked if we had used the safe and that we should have had all of our valuables keep there. We did use the safe for our cash and passports and medicine, but not our small electronics. Learning lesson for us. The safe was not large enough for our laptop so we had to put it in the hotel safe down at the front desk. They offered to move us to another room so we did. We changed rooms that day to a room one floor below.
After talking to several gust we learned that most of the rooms on the 5th floor were broken into that night.
Beach.
The beach is almost completely gone. The hurricane pretty much wiped it out. Now there is a very small area where all the guest get have to share. Which we did not mind so much. Also, the chairs were old and needed to be replaced.
The volleyball was fun and we played everyday. Beach is rocky so bring some beach shoes.
Staff was as always very nice!!! We had a blast going out the clubs with the group... Although they did split after they got us set up at the bar.
Food was good with lots of options.
Overall we had a nice time. But we most likely will not be going back to this hotel in the future. We have booked a trip to Jamaica in Nov. for 12 nights and a 6 night trip to Punta Cana in April 2010. Time to check out some new places.
