We stayed in the Riu Cancun by chance as there was a problem with our flight home and I can honestly say apart from one other holiday If I had booked that hotel for one week i would have rather flown home. The impressive driveway and entrance/reception give you a great first impression but it ends there.

The rooms are like a 3star in Spain it is dirty smelly and full of people from an episode of shameless.

The waiting staff are surely will poor skills and we sat at six tables at breakfast before we found one with clean linen.

Thank goodness we were only there for one night! They should close this down ane re open when they can afford to run it properly.

The only two good points I could say were a decent breakfast tea the best I drank all week and the Hot pancakes were lovely.

Sorry Riu but you need to get back to basics.....

Resort was really nice. Wasn't overly excited about the restaurants but we we were only able to get a reservation one night at the steak house. Was not impressed with the meal and ended up eating the buffet the rest of the time. Everything else about the place was great!

The hotel location was good. Close to shopping and night life. The beach and view was great as was the staff. The food was as usual in a all inclusive. This would be good place to go for a short trip. The downside is the beds are very HARD . There is no coffee in the rooms and no room service the only place to get coffee or anything is at the sports bar which is way up stairs. In order to dine in anything but the buffet you must make a reservation early in the morning starting at 7:00 am. If you got there a few min. late they would not serve you. Most of the time the place only had between 10 an15 couples about one fourth full. You could use there sister place which also had nice beach.

Check In--easy as can be! This took about 5 minutes total time, very very easy.

Room--the cleanest room that I have ever stayed in in Mexico. The room was updated and pretty modern, the view was the ocean, no issues at all-just great!

Pools--very awesome--they had 4 pools, there was a quiet type pool along the right side, there was the obligatory drinking and activity pools in the center and a very decent sunbathing pool along the left side. There was plenty of sun and the hospitality was great.

Food--the food at this Riu was much better than the other Riu's that we have stayed at. The buffet had a great selection of foods each day and every night there was a theme (mexican, italian etc...). We did eat at the steak house one night and it was great but entirely too much food, same with the Brazilian restaurant. The good thing about making reservations at this Riu was that you could make them for the week instead of having to go down each morning for reservations.

Staff--this staff was the best staff we have encountered at any Riu that we have stayed. Every single person was nice, helpful and professional. Absolutely no issues at all with any staff only perfection. It was amazing...

OVERALL--We have a great time, the Riu Cancun was absolutely great, the best Riu resort that we have stayed at yet. From now on and when we stay in Cancun we will be staying at the Riu Cancun. (note: we stayed at the Riu Caribe last year and it was a terrible experience with the hotel and staff--pay the extra $200.00 and stay at the Riu Cancun if you can..trust us on this one!)

Just returned from the Riu Cancun (25th Oct) and really tried hard to find fault with the hotel and couldn't. I travelled as a single parent with my teenage daughter, from the moment we arrived at the hotel we were made to feel very special with a welcome drink at check in.

Yes the hotel attracts the young and lively (a could measure of Americans), with its location on the strip it is bound to. My daughter and I found this no problem at all our room on the fourth floor with its fantastic ocean view was very quiet. The previous review mentioned dirty nappies round the pool and an abundance of unruly kids, I saw none of this my daughter and I spent almost every morning in one of the infinity pools or sunbathing and saw nothing untoward. Towards the end of our stay we did see more kids owing to the begining of the British half term but these to us didn't seem a problem in any way.

The staff are amazing (thanks Orlando for exceptional service), they couldn't do enough for you. I found the waiters in La Fiesta (were evening entertainment was held) fun to watch and very effiecent. The food was excellent we did try the steakhouse which was good but enjoyed the main buffet restaurant better overall. Every night in buffet was dedicated to a different theme italian, mexican, international etc however a whole range of other food was available so if you didn't like a particular type of cuisine there was plenty more to choose from.

The location of the hotel is fantastic. Across the road is a shopping mall not very big but ok to buy souveneers for home. There is also an ATM machine in the HSBC Bank there which offers both money in pesos and us dollars. I little farther up the road is Coco Bongos and The Hard Rock Cafe. There is also a Mcdonalds, Dominoes, KFC and Pizza Hut in walking distance from the hotel although why you would need them I don't know.

The beach is stunning very pale sand and the ocean amazingly clear. When we visited we had uncharacteristly windy weather (according to our transfer driver) this meant we spent little time on the beach. This was fine by us we preferred the pools anyway.

The entertainment was you usual hotel fare. The Micheal Jackson tribute show was fun as was the Grease production. We can't comment on the on site nightclub 'Pacha' as my daughter is only 15. As a Baileys drinker I was pleased to see no imitations here international brands where no problem.

I would have no problem recommending this hotel to anyone and I am planning a return visit next year if possible.
