We departed Glasgow on the 14th May 2007 for a two week stay at the Riu Cancun, Cancun. Having heard much about the hotel we were looking forward to out stay and we were not disappointed in any form.
The flight from Glasgow was a bit long however once we had managed to pass the Mexican Customs etc were soon emplaned on our coach and heading towards our hotel.
Arriving we were asked to leave our baggage in the front foyer whilst we booked in, booking in was quick and we were then asked to put some stickers (supplied by the hotel) with our room number on our bags and they would be brought up to us later. We then made our way up to the room, it being on the 4th floor. We noticed the slight odour when we got out of the lift but it wasnt a nauseating smell and it we soon became accustomed to it.
The hotel supplies one key room, two towel cards and also a key and barrel lock for your safe. There is a charge if you lose these items. The bed rooms are of a fairly high standard, lots to drink and these can be adapted to your own specific tastes.
The basic colour in the bed rooms is yellow walls with blue furnishings and coverings. It is not overpowering in any way.
The bathroom is tiled throughout, with two sinks, a toilet and bath/shower facility. The fittings are not cheap and nasty. Four towels are supplied daily when the maid (either a male or female as they seem to change.
The food standards throughout the two week period was very high, with a vast assortment of choice, this was for all meals from breakfast though to dinner.
There were four choices to dine in, a Japanese, a Brazilian, the main dinning room with various choices and finally the La maison with grills and quick meals like pizza’s or burgers etc.
There are 4 separate swimming pools; one near the La Mision with a view wall over the beach, the next was basically the 18-30’s pool with an assortment of activities throughout the day from water polo to tug of war. This one tended to get all rowdy at times. The next and by far the most popular for the drinkers was the bar pool. I’m amazed that some people can hold their bladder for so long as they tend to stay in all day (Or maybe Im not thinking right !!) The next is the one around the side of the hotel and tended to be quiet, this only gets the sun until about 1pm at the latest before it disappears behind the hotel. The water was cooler than the other three pools.
There were 3 main drinking areas, plus the disco, the one that I used least was the sports bar, however when checking it out I was surprised that this was were snacks were available 24/7, from burgers to hotdogs, fruit to salad. The room is fitted with TV’s all around but is totally non smoking.
The bar opposite the Corazone restaurant is were most people who didn’t want to see the activities go for a quiet drink, with a singer in the corner playing elevator music. When this place got hot or people wanted quiet they usually sat on the veranda and drinks were still available from the abundant waiting staff.
The last watering hole was where all the shows took place, it was large but the staff did tend to be very busy so often you had to get your own drinks. I’m afraid that some of the shows were up to much but it was more than likely due to the fact that the British humour is different from our American colleagues. One show I did enjoy was the Michael Jackson one and well worth the visit. The activity staff work a wonderful job, during the day getting the guests going around the pool and at night working in the show, a bit like the ‘Red coats’ from Butlins.
The bars in the room were stocked regularly, if you needed any changes a quick call to reception and they were knocking at your door, they must run with that trolley.
There are the beach hawkers regularly plying up and down the beaches selling anything from sun glasses to hair platting, if you like getting your picture taken with animals/mammals etc then you have the choice from Lizards, parrots, monkeys and once a week we saw the amazing ‘Coco’ a very tame chimpanzee who for $10 gives you a photo of him and your partner/you. The vendor is decent enough to allow you to take photos at the same time and it there is any problem with his photo he will take it again.
The place that I used most during the day was the sailing area, going out on the Hobies (Yachts) up to 2 times a day for an hour; there are also canoes, peddleloes, snorkelling, jet skies and paragliding. There is a $2 charge for conservation towards the reefs for every user; however this is a one off fee and well worth the payment. I used to tip the boys on this area regularly, but also plied them with a couple of drinks a day (Beer as they tend to sit there boiling all day) so you could also drop them a couple of drinks too – Every time either before or after I took them 4 beers it wasn’t costing me anything but the boys were thankful for it.
All in all the Riu Cancun is a very good hotel and one that I would certainly use again, the staff are wonderful, food excellent and one that I couldn’t really fault.
Throughout the holiday they provided an excellent service however I do have a gripe with the Riu chain but will not disclose as this it does not affect my thoughts over the Riu Cancun holiday.
