We stay there two nights, one at the beginning of our trip and another one at the end of our trip.

The first night was not very good. The guy who was working at the reception that night was not very helpfull as our air conditionning stopped around midnight and we had to ask him 3 times to check but he only came 1hour30 min after the first time we asked him. We then moved to another room and the air conditionner was very loud but it was ok. btw he did not help us to move our lugage even if we were in bed at the time he finally came (that we had to call him again

the second night was much better. The guy at the reception was speaking very well english and helped us to get to the hotel zone to visit.

If you go there go eat at the canadian sandwich restaurant on the main street at 5 min of walk. Other wise the area is not very cool to party so you will have to take a taxi to visit the club area near the hotel zone.

Accomodation was of hotel standard at hostel prices. We paid approx £13 a night each for a twin room which came with AC and cable TV. Decent sized, clean rooms. Daily maid service and continental breakfast included. Very good downtown location, only 10 minutes to hotel zone by bus. Only complaint is that it was very noisy. We had several school groups staying in the complex at the same time who ran riot for much of the time.

for the price you're paying, this is a great little hostel. we did not book in advance. the airport shuttle driver took us here when we asked about affordable rooms in downtown.
we asked for a corner room and we got it. the water was hot and the a/c worked, as it should. contintental breakfast of stale frosted flakes and sugar croissants was included. if you want more, the grocery store is right next door.
on sunday night, there was a drunk knocking on our door, but he went away after i shouted at him. hey, you're downtown. deal with it.
i would not bring little kids here, but if luxury resorts aren't your thing, go ahead and stay at the soberanis.

The hostel was clean and close to everything. That made it nice, we used it as a central location for our trips. I will return again.

We stayed one night at Hostel Soberanis in downtown Cancun in June. It was very easy to get a reservation through the internet, it was cheap, about $40usd, clean, comfortable, it had AC, TV and continental breakfast included. The staff was helpful and friendly, they recommended us a good italian restaurant nearby. It's a fair hike from the bus station, and be prepared for lots of solicitation from other hotels, but it's do-able to walk. Besides, taking a taxi is highway robbery. Breakfast was fine, coffee good and hot, danishes fresh. This was our only sighting of cockroaches, albeit small ones, and only two. (Face it, most of the restaurants in the US have them too.) We would recommend it for short stays.
