Let me start by saying I cannot believe how many negative reviews have been written about this resort. I have been to Mexico many times and found this resort to be among the top destinations that I have stayed. Having said that, each trip I try to upgrade a little bit to meet the needs that weren't met the previous trip. I have very few negatives to say about this resort.

Location/hotel Appearance: If you want to be close to downtown this resort is perfect. It is within walking distance to many shops, malls, clubs, bars, and resturaunts. The hotel itself is not accurately displayed in the photos. It is breathtaking. I thought to myself before I went, "wow, everyone posts the SAME pictures.
Well after being there I totally understand, you can't help but photograph the beautiful building and it really is a site to see.
The building is well kept, spotless at all times, and the staff works non-stop cleaning and polishing the furniture, floor, etc.

The rooms are pretty average, there was absolutely nothing wrong with them. Yes, some of the rooms have to double beds pushed together, however, many of them do not. We actually stayed in two different rooms, our first room was oceanview without a balcony and had two beds pushed together. This didn't bother us. However, we switched to another oceanview room a couple days into our stay that had a balcony (the only reason we asked for the switch) and the bed was just a king in that room. Both rooms were set up the exact same. You have a mini fridge with soda, beer, water. You can get more or less of any of it. All you have to do is ask. The bathroom has two sinks, his and hers, which was lovely. There is an ironing board, hairdryer, and shampoo, lotion, conditioner, in every room. They also give you a little sewing kit.
We were in an ocean view room on the 8th floor and then on the 6th. Neither room had a bad smell.
I was expecting a terrible, knock you over type smell when I walked in and I never got it. Thankfully! Yes, there is a MILD MILD MILD smell... if you have ever been to the beach, oceanfront resort, you have smelled it before. Its not bad at all, and if your focused on your vacation and not looking for things to nit pick and write home about, you will not even notice it.

The Food was above average for an all-inclusive. We always go all inclusive and this was the best food we have had. There really is something for everyone. I went with my significant other who is a very picky eater, as well as 5 others. We never had a day where someone wasn't pleased. With that said, we only ate the dinner buffet once, and that was our first day there. We booked speciality resturaunts the rest of the 7 nights and were pleased each night. You do have to book your reservations early to get them, but its not difficult to do if you have atleast one early riser in your group. The spanish speciality was great (get the beef fillet and mashed potatoes!) I also really enjoyed the steak house (ate here twice, the fillet and Rib Eye were GREAT) Steak is available every night if you want it, we had it most of the time, but they also had great other option at every place. The chicken was great at the Japanese too. We ate lunch at the Italian probably 4 or 5 times throughout the week. They have a geat lunch beef fillet, also have good pasta and pizza. The staff is great and is you feel like you need more then the portions they serve, just ask for two. We ordered two steaks several times and they are more than happy to get it for you. At the Japanese, we all ordered to main dishes and they didn't blink an eye. Top of the line service. We also ate the buffets for lunch at our resort and next door at the RIU CANCUN. They also had a great lunch buffet so don't miss it.

We ordered room services and it was pretty good...it is available 24 hours which is great!

The fitness center has everything you need...after all your on VACATION!

The pools are just as they appear in the pictures. The quiet pool, is very quiet, I only saw a handful of people in it everyday and the hotel seemed to be full. The other activity pool, was NOT loud at all. They played bingo, volleyball and had water aerobics everyday. As far as other reviews saying it was wild and crazy..it never was. We had a great time playing volleyball. The entertainment staff works so hard. They start in the morning around 9 and did all the pool sports then you saw the same crew in the theater some nights and they also take a party hopper group to a club everynight if you want to go. They really are great and always keep their smiles on. Say hello to George for us!
We went next door to hang out at the RIU CANCUN a couple days and enjoyed it also, they have a little younger crowd ( 20's -30's) and they have a more lively pool. We enjoyed both aspects.

There are plenty of pool chairs, however, you do have to get up early to get one right next to the pool... I got up at 7 and went down and almost all the immediate poolside chairs were taken.. However, don't get frustrated, you can pull chairs up to the pool whereever you want. We did it nearly everyday, even the pool staff will move chairs for you and get you an umbrella if you want it. JUST ASK.

The beach was the best I have seen in Cancun and Riveria Maya. VERY SWIMMABLE, crystal clear water and it is calm. There are no umbrellas on the beach, but once again if you want one they will get it if you ask for it. They also have drink service on the beach all day long.

We went jet skiing right in front of our beach and it was so much fun, I recommend it. You can also rent snorkle gear for free at the hut on the right side on the beach near the RIU CANCUN.

At night time little venders set up and you can look at all the silver and wooden items they sell. The Theater shows were great.. a couple were a little cheesy, but GOOD. Some of them were really really great though.
There is free WIFI in the lobby and it works great.

The weather was perfect and we didn't have any rain.. I hear when it does rain its only for a short amount of time.

If you are looking for a top of the line above average all inclusive in a great location with good food, great beach, and awesome pool setting, this is the place for you. I always stay at a different resort each trip, but I would DEFINATELY go back here next year.

My husband an I have just returned from our honeymoon at the Riu Palace. This hotel has to be seen to be believed; from the minute we walked into the lobby I was impressed. It certainly is a palace!!
The staff are amazing and simply can not do enough for you. They work so hard its unreal. As you finish your drink at the bar, pooslide or beach, they are straight along with another one. You simply cant fault them. As for the review below were the staff dont say thankyou when tipped, they must have stayed in a different hotel?? I never felt like the staff expected a tip once during our entire stay and when you did tip them, they always thanked you. Im my eyes the staff were worth every tip given to them and are a credit to the hotel!
The food was excellent and there was something for every taste. I have stayed in all inclusive hotels before and soon got bored with the buffet selection. This was not the case here. The buffet had a diferent theme everynight and the al a carte resteraunts were superb! We were spoilt for choice and never ate outside of the hotel.
The entertainment staff were great. All full of energy and again worked so hard! There was water polo, beach volley ball, water areobics and a kids club. And then every evening after the hotel show, the entertainment staff took guests to the local niteclubs and got you VIP enterance. It was cheaper than the bar crawl with Thompson, plus we didnt need to queue to get in the clubs, and the staff stayed with us all night, making sure the drinks kept flowing, in the VIP area they had securred for you. You didnt even have to go to the bar!!
Our rooms were cleaned every morning at 8.45am unless we used the do not disturb sign. The rooms were spotless and fresh towels and sheets provided every day. The cleaning staff then came around again about 5pm to give more towels and re stock the mini bar. Again the staff were faultless and accomodating in every way.
We would recomend this hotel to anyone and will be going back to stay there again. The hotel is in the best location. Not only are you a few minute walk from Cancuns best nitelife, but there are shoping malls a few minutes drive away, plus a wide range of both day and evening excursions you can book on, wich again are only a 5 minute taxi/bus drive away. Fantastic all round. No matter what you want from a holiday, to relax, to party or a bit of both, you will find it here!

I have only good things to say about this hotel:
- location is very good, nice restaurants, good food, relaxing atmosphere, nice staff and very nice room (deluxe suite - ocean view).

Also, my best regards for Rodolfo (he starts at 5.30 pm until 12am) - the best bartender from Riu!

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Riu Palace Las Americas for 2 weeks from the 10th - 24th June 2009. I would consider myself to be well travelled and have stayed in many 4 / 5 star hotels worldwide.

Check-In
We arrived at the hotel at around 5:30pm and were instantly seated at a table in the exquisite Lobby where, drink in hand, we completed the check-in paperwork and within 15 minutes were in our room unpacking.

The Room (2nd Floor 0224)
Whilst I agree that the furniture in the room was a a little dated, dark wood furnishing, the room was large, clean with a beautifully marble tiled bathroom which had two sinks and a good selection of complimentary toiletries, all laid out exactly as you would expect from a 5 star hotel. The mini bar was well stocked with bottled water, lager, 7 up, pepsi (including diet) and soda water and was restocked daily. In addition to the mini bar was an optics cabinet containing Brandy, Whisky, Vodka and Bacardi all branded labels.

The Bed.
I was somewhat hesitant having read previous reviews regarding the HARD beds as I am used to sleeping on a very soft bed at home, between 2 quilts, as hard beds make me prone to cramping during the night. Surprisingly, I didn't find the beds to be as hard as people made out and had no trouble whatsoever sleeping.

The Musty Smell.
Again, having read previous reviews, I arrived expecting to be overwhelmed by this smell, however was delighted to find out for myself that this was at worst, only mild and at best almost undetectable… and I visited most floors of the hotel during our stay and found this to be the case throughout.

The Buffet Restaurant.
Firstly, I would like to point out that during the first couple of days the hotel was running at maybe 60% capacity (thank you Swine Flu… or should I say, lack of Swine Flu) yet all the speciality restaurants were open and it appeared to be ‘business as usual’. By the weekend the hotel was almost full maybe 95% capacity, yet this did not affect the first class service we were receiving. Tables were cleared, re-laid and ready for use again at lightening speed. Seating was allocated upon arrival at the restaurant so no walking round, plate in hand looking for an empty table or having to guard your table whilst your partner ventured off for food (Dominican Republic 2005).
There was plenty of food to suite every possible taste ranging from salads, seafood platters, and a huge selection of cold and cooked meats. They even had caviar available every night… you name it, they had it... I was totally spoilt for choice during our entire 2 week stay. How anybody could find fault with the food or the variety of food astounds me… I guess they could always visit the Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pizza Hut or Subway outlets, which were situated not far from the hotel.

The Speciality Restaurants.
Even when the hotel was full, making reservations for the speciality restaurants was simple. You normally had to book a day or so in advance but could book for each of the restaurants together, thus eliminating the need to queue at the Service Desk every morning. Although having said that, I arrived at the Service Desk at around 10:00am and only queued for maybe 5 minutes or so and made all our reservations together.

The Pools.
We spent a lot of time in both pools and at various times of the day, from early morning to late evening. Both pools were crystal clear every morning and still reasonably clear right through to 6:30pm. The quiet pool never seemed to have more than 15 people in at any one time, and whilst the pool with the swim up bar was always busier, it never felt crowded, and as for the person who’s review said that the pools were dirty and noisy and full of wild drinking games… What Are You On About..!? We were there at the same time as you and totally disagree with your comments. Yes people were smoking, (I don’t), yet I never saw anyone put a cigarette, cigar, lime or anything ‘snot like’ in the pool ever. Are you sure you stayed at the Riu Palace..? We did take a casual stroll down the beach to the Riu Caribe and found their pool to be very crowded, noisy and rowdy… Perhaps you are confusing it with them.

The Beach.
The hotel has the best stretch of beach in Cancun, I know this as I walked right along the coastline in both directions during our stay. The water was calm, clear, warm and very shallow for the first 30 yards then the floor drops away. Perfect for families with young children who will spend hours of fun splashing in the shallow water and watching the many fish that swim around your ankles. The beach is continually cleaned throughout the day and is 99% seaweed free.

The Hotel in General.
The hotel lobby is breathtaking and screams out 5 star hotel. The moment you arrive you realise you are staying somewhere special. The grounds are extremely well maintained and immaculately clean. You will always see someone somewhere cleaning something. The reception staff were always courteous and gave a competitive exchange rate, although US Dollars seem to be the favoured choice of currency. The Bar Staff and Waiters are very hard working and are always smiling. Nothing seems to be too much trouble for them and you get a feeling that their friendliness is genuine, rather than just a painted smile. I found it almost impossible to finish a drink before being approached by a waiter ready to take our next order. This applied while lying on the sun loungers in the grounds, on the beach and even in the pool. There was always someone offering you drinks. No queuing knee deep at the bar in this hotel. Oh, and if you’re a fan of cockroaches then go somewhere else as there are non at the Riu Palace.

In conclusion, this hotel truly is a ‘Palace’ and you will feel like ‘Royalty’ from the moment you check-in. Whilst the Riu Cancun and Riu Caribe are also 5 star hotels I guarantee you will get that feeling of self-satisfaction in the knowledge that you are staying in the best.
