My husband and I went for a much needed vacation by ourselves. We went Feb 13-17, 2005. (Yes, I am still thinking about it!!) I had never been to Cancun before and the first thing I noticed was the gorgeous water; like a turquoise greenish color. It is unreal how pretty it is.
The Riu Palace was very impressive - it really was like a palace. Beautiful, with marble, tile, chandeliers, beautiful paintings/pictures - and this was just the lobby! We did get there maybe around 1 p.m., but were not able to actually check in until around 4 p.m. They did give us our bracelets at 1 p.m. so that we could go ahead and eat.The girl tried to explain where all the restaurants were and a few basic details, but it was overwhelming. We went ahead and ate, and then changed into our swimsuits to go in the pool until we could check in. One thing was funny though. When we were finally able to check in around 4, the girl there handed us our envelope with the room keys and said, here you go, it's room 143. That was it. No explanation. We were like "where is that?". She said "oh, it's that way" and pointed vaguely to our right. We finally found it. I am guessing she figured that the girl who gave us the arm bracelets explained everything already.
Our room was lovely too. It was a Junior suite - but a good size in my opinion: Tile floors, carved wood, and it overlooked the ocean. Beautiful bathroom. We fell asleep each night to the sound of the ocean. I could not believe that you have a FULLY STOCKED refrigerator in your room. You don't have to pay for any of it - it's all included. And they restock it every other day....
When you go out the back of the hotel, there are these wide porches with couches you can rest on, with big ceiling fans above. There were two large pools (heated) and jacuzzis (one inside, one outside). The main center pool was more quiet, as were the chairs to the left of it.... The other pool area (the one to the right) was where they were playing music and doing games, so it was a bit louder. . The grounds were beautiful, too. The beach was not very big. (I am usually something of a beach connoisseur, however, I was a tired Mom and ready for a break and everything else was so nice, it didn't bother me. And DH could care less either way.) However, there were kayaks, paddleboats, and all kinds of other water sports and activities to do, also included. One day we took a snorkeling trip out to the reef to see the many fish there (about $30 p.p. You can go next door on the beach to the Riu Cancun and there is a dive shop where you can sign up.) Every day was mid 80's. One day it did rain for a short time and then the humidity jumped! But other than that it was pleasant with breezes. We visited the local Wal-Mart, which was very much like any other Wal-Mart, but it was neat to see. The local bus to get there was quite interesting to say the least. It was only 6 or 7 pesos (like 70¢) per person, so it was cheap transportation and the entertainment aboard was free! We also went to some shops & flea markets (you could walk across the street and down the block from the hotel) and got our supply of real Vanilla extract for just a few cents each ounce -- compared to here where it's about $2 an ounce!! (You should be able to find it for less than 50¢ or 6 pesos an ounce. If it's not, then keep shopping.) Hopefully it'll last until our next trip...
The resort was really lovely. It was well kept up. There were ALWAYS people cleaning, morning, noon and night! These people are hard workers, and even if some didn't speak English, were still very friendly and smiled at you. We were there over Valentine's Day and they had some special things going on for that. We got "married" as did other couples. (Not really, just a funny ceremony in the lounge in the evening.) Also, they had a guy dressed up as cupid, and another guy handing out red roses.... That was a nice touch... We enjoyed the fact that ALL meals and drinks were included (there were six restaurants to pick from). You didn't have to sign for anything or give tips either!! We NEVER got up early to make reservations at the restaurants. We usually didn't eat breakfast until about 9 and that's when we made our reservations. We were never turned down either. (I think the latest you can make reservations is 10:30 a.m.)
There was live music and a show every evening in the lounge. (Shows were actually quite good.) Everyone was so friendly, too. Really just no stress here at all. I commented to my DH that it was very much like a cruise except that you didn't have to move around -- and we didn't want to. We have told EVERYONE we know about this place and how wonderful it is. We plan to return here someday or to the Riu Palace in Punta Cana. There are lots of Riu properties, but the Riu Palace resorts are even better. We got such a great deal. I think this place would be $800 a night in the US if there was even such a place - but I don't think there is. I just can't say enough good about this place!
