Perched upon what is said to be the highest point in Cancun, is an ancient Mayan ruin, Yamil Lu'um. Probably the best thing about this ruin, is its proximity to the Caribbean Sea. You can see it from the beach, and walk a few steps to its platform for an up close look.
It is a very small sample of Mayan history, but it may spark interest in those who might want to consider a 1-hour trek south to TULUM, or a 2- to 3-hour trip to CHICHEN ITZA. From my standpoint, both trips are well worth the effort. I enjoyed wandering through Tulum on my own, but take a tour to enjoy the much larger Chichen Itza... And I'm not much on tours.
The new Westin Lagunamar Ocean Resort sets too close to this jewel, but it is my understanding, that the resort will be contributing to its preservation. Within the resort lobby, there is a wall dedicated to the ruin.
