I really wanted to write a review because I read every review before we booked our trip. I am going to try to give you some info no one else has said.

We are a married couple with a 6 yr old girl and 11 yr old boy. We booked our hotel stay through Funjet.com and purchased our airfare directly from the airline.

Room - we had a Standard Lagoon view 2 double beds, it also a twin size Murphy bed that pulled down out of the wall which was very nice. My husband tried to "tip" the front desk $40 for an upgraded ocean view room, but he didn't accept it he said if we wanted an OV room it was an extra $30 a night. So we kept our $40 stayed with our lagoon view room, it had a pretty view of the lagoon and a golf course. We weren’t in the room much so we didn’t want to pay any extra. Our safe didn’t work, but we didn’t call anyone to fix it. We just carried our passports with us. The maid service was excellent! We did leave a DS and a PSP and some other valuables they were right where we left them when we came back. The walls are paper thin someone kept calling our neighbor at midnight and the phone would ring and ring and ring. We also could hear their TV and them going to the bathroom. We left the fan on in our bathroom to try to drown out some of their noise it didn’t help much but the kids slept through it.

Timeshares – we were approached at the airport we said “no thanks” and kept walking. At the hotel after we checked in we met with our hotel rep and she gave us the schedules of the shows and what the specials were at the restaurants and told us about the hotel at the end she tried to set up a time for us to meet so we could learn about becoming a member we said no thanks. It was very low pressure. The next morning we had a card under our door saying our “presentation” time was at noon. We just ignored it. It was very low key. This website really prepared us for what to expect.

Food it’s typical all-inclusive. My kids survived on bread, French fries and ice cream. They also had a pasta bar which was great. Breakfast was great! So we always ate a huge breakfast.

Service – at the pool they do not wait on you. It is self service so you help your self at the snack bar, they have a swim up bar on one side and the other side of it you can walk up to it. We did tip the bartenders, they didn’t expect it but deserved it they never get a break.

Marina – isn’t at this hotel it’s at the sister hotel the Royal Solaris they have a van that will take you there, we never did.

Pool - Guests would put towels on chairs to reserve them before 6 am. They wouldn’t even come down to the pool until afternoon. We were very disappointed with the pool it was freezing! My kids wouldn’t even swim in it.

Kids Club – is wonderful so glad they had it since my kids couldn’t swim they would have been totally bored with out the kids club. They did games and crafts had a puppet show and played video games also had face painting. The average age in the Club was probably about 6 yrs old.

Hotel – is new and very clean. It is very small.

The Staff is very friendly and work hard we did tip them. The entertainment staff are a lot of fun and kept everyone entertained at the pool. The shows at night start at 9 pm and are very good our favorite was the Sat. Night Live Show.

Beach – there is none it has washed away. They had red flags up everyday the waves were really rough.

Overall we had a fun stay- just VERY disappointed the pool was so cold!

  • Disliked — The pool was freezing and there is no beach

We just returned yesterday from the GR Solaris - after many months of research on this site. Check in and customs were a breeze, just avoid the timeshare reps. in the lobby of the airport. We flew w/ Apple Vacations and they were great. The reps were waiting outside in flowered shirts - and took us by van to the hotel. The GR Solaris was only about 15 min. from the airport and we arrived at the hotel by 9:00 am. One of our 4 rooms were ready, however we just checked in our bags with the bellman, received our bracelets and ate breakfast and headed for the pool. A "Hotel Rep." was assigned to us. He wanted to show us around - we new he was going to try and set up our timeshare meeting, so we told him we were not interested - p.s. they wear the yellow shirts and hang out in the lobby. They only made 1 other attempt to contact us by phone, telling us that we were not registered at the hotel and we needed to come to the lobby and meet us. We again told them we were not interested and they left us alone the rest of the trip.
I cannot say enough about the staff - they were wonderful. Always smiling - they put in very long hours and always do a great job. Benjamin and Heimy at the pool bar were outstanding - always ready with drinks - even sometimes when we were not! The drinks were the best of any AI I have ever stayed at. If you want Absoulte or Tangerey - just ask. They have a very wide selection of "fruity drinks" also. Beer in Sol in the bottle (they pour in glass for you) or XX on tap - both were always cold and good. They had a coffee cart in the lobby from 4-6 which served speciality coffee - very good after a long day at the pool - my favorite was the Mayan Coffee.
The lobby bar was ok - they had Karaoke 1 night and "lounge singers" the other nights. Judith in the lobby bar was great - she always made sure the drinks were full. There were also show's in the ballroom some of the other nights. We never made it to them - after a long day of sun fun and food - we usually turned in early.
Rooms were clean and comfortable - bed's a bit hard but noise never bothered us - we kept the fan on and it seemed to drown out the hallway noise.
Food - At the beginning of the trip, I would say that the food was above average - breakfast always good - if you didn't like buffet - they have made to order stations - always fresh and hot. We did order room service 1 time - lots of food and very good - another couple did the same and there's was cold. The deli had made to order sandwiches and other's made up. I would suggest have everything made up - I grabbed one that was sitting out and I was sick the next day. Didn't give a thought to how long it sat out. Lunch was so - so - also got old by the end of the week. Very good pasta's, salads and desserts. The Marco Polo's food tasted the best, however it is a 6 course meal, so plan on spending some time there. Red wine there was good, and they had xx in bottles - also they had a long wine list, which was extra. Friday's is lobster night. Our group split up. We went to Marco Polo again and had a very nice tail, steak and shrimp. The other's hit the Ballroom and Rosmaris and they were very disappointed - they only had small cut up pieces in sauce. I do have to say that the buffett gets old about mid week - we did go into town to Pat'OBriens and Carlos and Charlies 2 nights to "mix things up a bit".
We only did 1excursion. - We rented a private catamaran (I booked on line before we left) If you like boating, sailing, etc. this was the trip to do. It was just the 6 of us and 2 crew members. - The snorkeling was the best I've ever seen - we sailed to Isla Murjerlas and went into town for lunch and then sailed back. Very relaxing - highly recommended.
The other days we just hung out at the pool. The entertainment staff was great. Thanks to Eisha, Simone, Sandy, Dave and Davoe - I do suggest getting involved with their poolside games - it is a lot of fun, once you start.
I have previously stayed at the Riu and Barcelo chains in Mexico - the GR Solaris overall was our best experience - I would definately return - please e-mail me with any questions.

Just got back from sunny Cancun Mexico and thought I'd post a review.
:-)

The hotel is gorgeous, accomodations were great, service was wonderful! When we got there, our room was exactly as advertised and the staff were not overly solicitous about timeshare stuff (unlike in town - the all-inclusive wristbands were like little beacons to the timeshare salesmen!). The pools (both adult and general population) were really nice, too. And the drinks were really quite good, too.

Only one drawback, as the last reviewer stated: the food was sometimes pretty good, but generally "eh" at best. Also, not much variety of food. Breakfast was generally the most sucessful (waffles and omelettes), but even that was sometimes a failure (waffles on Sunday were undercooked). Of it all, I'd recommend room service the least - food was cold.

We got massages, facials, manis and pedis at the spa and it was all great - the gals are friendly and really good at their jobs, so totally recommend availing yourself of the spa!

So, overall, we really enjoyed our stay at the GR Solaris; just a little caution on the food.

Went to the GR Solaris for my birthday with my boyfriend.

Beautiful hotel. Very nice workers. Warning-BAD BAD BAD food. If you like luke warm wieners & nuggets that have been sitting under a heat lamp for hours, then you will have no problem. By the middle of our trip I could barley even smell the food without feeling sick. Don't go to the Deli, or Marco Polo. Don't eat by the pool, unless you like pure grease. Breakfast was the best meal, fruit, mimosas you can make yourself!!! The cakse were good.

Beautiful beach, careful of the ROCKS. I hurt myself badly on the first day & the lifegaurd doesn't warn you. The spot by the drain hole is the least rocky. Adult pool is great.

Entertainment pool is fun because it has a SWIM up Bar. The entertainment staff can be a little creepy & pushy. One guy was mad because I had a boyfriend...ridiculous.

All in all a great place, nice staff. Make sure you GO OUT for DINNER. (Carlos & Charlies is fun!)

The buses are very efficient but FAST!! Enjoy!!

My husband and I both thought this hotel was excellent! We spent 6 days at the GR and relaxed the minute we stepped foot on the resort. We never encountered rudeness from any of the staff - all were willing to help make our stay enjoyable.

We were celebrating our 25th anniversary and were surprised to find a chilled bottle of champagne waiting for us in our room the first night.

This was our first trip to Mexico and first experience with AI and we were not disappointed. Granted, we have nothing to compare it to and was a little worried after reading other reviews but we lived in paradise for a week with only one drawback, see below.

We both thought the food was good. There was always something different and we never went hungry. We ate 4 times a day at least as well as snacks (the salsa is awesome) and it was hard to wean from that once we got back home to reality.

Entertainment staff keeps you entertained. What a riot! My husband probably still dreams of 'Sexy' Sandy. The bartenders and waiters were very attentive. Big shout out to Benjamin at the swim-up bar and Judith in the lounge in the hotel. You didn't have to ask for a refill of whatever you were drinking - if they saw you getting 'low', there was another drink waiting for you! You sure don't get that here at home!

The view from our room was breathtaking! We got the type room we wanted and it was more than adequate. The bed was a little hard but still slept good. Only one night did we hear people in the hallway late at night/early morning so not a huge problem.

If I had one complaint it would have to be the hotel staff trying to get you to buy membership to the hotel. We weren't interested in that and politely told them. They weren't rude about it, just would get you talking about your family, etc., before you knew what they really wanted.

We would definitely stay here again!
