Went to GR on a last minute trip with my two children ages 11 and 14. Used USA Transfer for great round trip service from airport to hotel (have this planned out as the airport can be an aggressive area for service seekers). Given drinks upon arrival and immediately the time share rep, Mike, came around as I had read about this on the internet. He sat my two children and myself down on a sofa in the lobby and told us that he was there to tell us about the all inclusive information and details. We listened. He then said, "It must be tough raising two children alone." I was dumbfounded at the comment in front of the children and my two children turned and stared at me awaiting a response. I told him it was fine. He then did the "pitch" and I nicely said no. He then did the guilt trip of "my wife and I get a free night here if you attend and I can give you an extra massage." I said no as I knew I was not interested and have been to hear pitches before. I was very nice about saying no. He then decided to insult me by saying, "so, you are divorced". I am not sure he point of that final jab as we were done talking. He then said he had to ask and put a check mark on his paper on his clipboard. My children again just stared at me for a response. It was a terrible way to start our vacation - very awkward as I had not received any discount or agreed to anything upon making my reservations through Expedia. I felt as though this was a definite time share hotel with people wearing color coded bracelets. Those with yellow bracelets, time share owners, received much better quality wines at dinners and specialized desserts.

I had upgraded my room to oceanfront upon check in. The view was beautiful. The room was adequate, however, the walls are very thin so I opened our sliding glass door at night for the sound of the ocean as opposed to people coming in late. But, they evidently powerwash the pool decks and chairs in the middle of the night. We were on a non smoking floor and the people next to us smoked on the balcony and it all came onto us, as well as their cigarette butts. I called the front desk twice, but nothing changed. Our hallway (3rd floor) smelled of sewage often.

We watched the beginning of one night of entertainment, but thought it was a little cheesy so we left. This was dancing...the other events might have been better.

The food selection was good and the quality was average. The wait staff at every venue was awesome, including the bar tenders who never let my glass run dry, even my children. Bring lots of ones ($1.00) to tip. A little will go a long way. Marco Polo was good, however, their dress code is bizarre. I saw men coming in with seriously torn blue jeans, t-shirts, and cheap plastic flip flops. However, my 14 year old wore a freshly pressed new Tommy H. button down shirt with collar (tucked in) with a belt, kahki shorts that came to his knees, and new leather deck shoes, and was turned away because of the "no shorts" rule for adults. I understand the no shorts, but what other people were allowed to wear really did not support the type of atmosphere they say they are working so hard to create.

The swim up pool bar was very nice for all three of us. If you do like a good drink, just ask for a double in the beginning, tip $4-$5 once in the beginning of each day to one tender, and you and your family will be well taken care of the entire day. The pools were very nice. I actually liked the pebble bottom and non chlorine water filtration system. It was a nice change. Do know that the main pool takes on a more adult theme in the early afternoon. The games are fun to watch, but have a drinking (shots/slams) aspect to them. A little like a quasi spring break feel for the over 30 group. If you have kids and you don't want them to be a viewer of that, just move down to the lower pool. It was not bad, just marginal for some I believe as it gets a little rowdy after a few hours of a swim up open bar. The adult pool was nice at the end of the day. The beach is small. The waves look as though they would be very powerful upon breaking, however they were not. It is the undertow that is dangerous.

The marina for the water sports are a van ride away across the street and south a little. We did not use it.

Take the buses wherever you need to go as it is only $ .70 per person. They are right outside the hotel, frequent, and very (almost too very) fast. I do not recommend renting a car as it can be problematic for foreigners with the police. I rented a jeep for a day to go to Puerto Morelos to snorkle (that was a great deal and most beautiful) and was immediately told not to give any money to the police and to watch my speed carefully. The speed limits were totally unpredictable and all over the place within a few hundred yards of each signage. My daughter was shocked to see policemen pass us frequently in the back of trucks armed with machine guns in their hands.

Do go to Isla Mujeres by ferry and rent a golf cart to tour the island. Go to north beach near Maria Del Mar hotel and find the quiet beautiful beach to play and rest. They rent umbrellas, chairs, and outdoor queen beds with netting for $15.00 a day.

There is a Wal-Mart and Sams about a 15 minute bus ride from the hotel in downtown Cancun.
I did get a pretty good value for the money, but I would upgrade to a nicer all inclusive next time.

Great hotel would stay there again. went for my husbands 30th bday. on our way to the hotel from the airport, we were with 2 couples that were staying at the Royal GR Solaris. After they were dropped off we saw the hotel next to it and we're a little worried thinking that might be our hotel...but to our surprise it wasnt, it was a few hotels down and we were very impressed when we pulled up. It looks like a smaller version of The Mirage hotel or Bellagio in Vegas. We were greeted with drinks while we checked in. Great first Impression when you walk in. Our room was awesome with a view of the ocean and pool. Our room had a refrigerator that was stocked with sodas, bottle water, and beer! It was free to have this and they stalk it daily when your room is cleaned. In our room they also had a safety box. The hotel has 24 hour FREE room service!!! and the gym you can use for free. They were very good at cleaning and sanitizing the equipment after each use. The food was good and the drinks were made from premium alcohol so no cheap stuff. The cheeseburgers at the snack bar were INCREDIBLE!! I would definently recommend this hotel to family and friends. The people staying there were over the age of 25 and up. They had families there as well. We got more than our moneys worth there. I would visit again for sure. Great customer service, good food, great drinks, and clean! Awesome Hotel!!!! Four stars... I would of given it a 5 if the bed wasnt firm. But the pillows were cozy. I have stayed at hotels in Mexico where the pillows feel like your sleeping on rocks but these were cozy! Slept well!

The room size was ok, but the comforter and the room decoration was very outdated. We found that if you take a late morning shower, the water was too hot and the cold water could not regulate it. We were assigned a person to help us with any information getting around or other, but it also included pushing us to attend the hotel time share presentation. We had a bad experience with the hotel travel agent, it was late in the afternoon Jamin (travel agent) was in a bad mood.

Just back from a one week stay at the GR with my wife and two young boys. The trip didn't start very well, as I had scheduled a pickup at the airport through the hotel's travel agency, Sol-Ha. When we walked outside of the airport to look for our ride, 9:30pm by the way, they were no where to be found. We waited around for about 15-20 minutes, while trying to keep the people offering rides at bay. Finally we tried calling the hotel directly, however the office was closed and we couldn't reach anyone directly at our property to confirm the transport. We finally had to settle on a ride from one of the guys waiting outside, ended up with a one way ride for $40USD.

Upon arrival at the hotel, check in was quick and efficient. We stayed in room 8316, which is directly in the center of the hotel on the ocean side. Beautiful view!!! the room shared a balcony with three other rooms, with out any divider, which seemed a bit strange, but worked out fine.

The room was very clean, and in great shape. I had read previous reviews about the rooms being out of date, but did not experience the same with our room. We had a king size bed and a single bed that folded into the wall. The four of us all slept in the king, as no one wanted to sleep by themselves in the single. The bathroom was clean, and well stocked. The mini-fridge had three small Sol beers, three bottled waters and three sodas.

The pools were nice, but we weren't wild about the pebble finsh of the pool, a little rough! The childrens pool was nice as my wife and I could hang out in the big pool and still be next to the boys in their pool. The swim up bar is also close to the children's pool, which was fine for us, but probably a pain if your left the little ones at home. The kids liked to swim up to the bar to have the non-alcholic drinks the bartenders offered. We tried to keep the boys away from the bar, as not to bug anyone. We all paid plenty for vacation, and I wouldn't want to be the cause of anyone's buzz kill.

We ate at the cafe, which reminded me of a cafeteria, almost everymorning. The food was good, but not great. Plenty of american type food, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon... and also mexican inspired dishes. My oldest ate fruit loops everyday, only because he doesn't get them at home, and we were all enjoying our vacation together.
There is an outdoor restaurant in the afternoon for lunch that was nice.

At night there is a different themed dinner buffett and show. We thought this was great because with the boys, we weren't going out to the clubs, so this gave us something to do together. The shows were a lot of fun. However after eating at the hotel for a week, we saw the same dishes over and over again. But we knew we weren't staying at an AI for the upscale food, simply the convience of having everything anytime we wanted.

Each night after the show was over, a large number of people would move to the lobby bar to enjoy the live music and then if interested, the hotel staff led a trip to which ever club was on the agenda that evening. $40USD seemed to be the going rate for vip entrance to the club with unlimited drinks. Must have been fun, because they always had a large group heading down to the bus stop in front of the hotel each night.

The hotel was in very good condition, and never did it seem overcrowded. I realize that occupancy is down in Cancun, but the Royal Solaris was closed at the beginning of our stay, and all of the travelers were moved the the GR. I was also a little worried about the hotel's time share sharks hunting us down, but we only received one call our first morning and they left us alone after we told them we weren't interested.

The hotel is located at the bottom of the hotel zone, but a 10-15 minute bus ride later and we were in the party zone. A nice balance, as we weren't here for the night life, but still wanted to see some of the action.

We had a great time, met some very nice people. Just about all the guest were very friendly, and I know we made friends with another family staying with their two little ones. My oldest and their oldest became quick friends, and were always thrilled to see each other either at the pool, shows, or the lobby bar in the evening.

Great hotel for families with children and the over 30 crowd, as this hotel was lively, but not the beer bong crowd. Have fun and don't forget to tip your housekeeper, they kept our room spotless, and yes we had the towel animals to look forward to each day we returned to our room.

One last tip I have would to bring an insulated cup or mug as the cups the pool bars supply are small and uninsulated. In Cancun's warm climate, your drink will become too warm to drink in minutes. I brought one, and was glad I did!

Booked at the Royal Solaris, but because of the unfounded swine flu scare, was moved to the GR. I had done a great deal of research on the Royal, and think I may have been better off there.
It was very quiet when we first got there, Arrived May 28-June3 (we actually left a day early) After the weekend, a great deal more folks started arriving.
The weather was gorgeous, and Cancun was nice.
The hotel staff at the pool did a good job of trying to keep everyone occupied, but it was the same thing after a few days.
The food was plenty, but the quality was just ok. I've been to an AI in Punta Cana and this did not compare. No sickness however, drank bottled water the whole time. Marco Polo was good, and the dinner shows had better food.
The maid service was good, I paid well to ensure I received water.
The beach was a little disappointing if you are like me and like to walk for miles! My daughter and I went for a walk that was more like a hike and came back after about 15 mins.
The hotel desk staff were not very accomodating or friendly.
Had a bad experience with both the hotel store and the hotel travel agency. I was sold tickets to a ferry to Isla Mujeres that was not running. We got up early, took a bus and had to turn around and go back to the hotel.
In both cases the Fr Desk Manager claimed that they were not "with the hotel" and there was nothing he could do. Not a customer friendly management staff at all.
If you like to party, and hang at the pool bar this is the place for you, otherwise I'd try someplace else.
