We just returned from 7 days at the GR Solaris. We were originally booked for the Royal Solaris. However, when we arrived we were told that the hotel was full and we would be staying at the GR Solaris,a few hundred feet away. Our Olympus van driver told us we had just been upgraded and I have to believe he was right. Looking back, I believe that we were sent to the GR Solaris, not because the Royal was full, but because we were prospects for time shares. When we arrived at the GR Solaris, we were immediately greeted by our "Personal Representative", a young gentleman who bought us drinks before we even got to our room. He swore that it had nothing to do with time shares but it did. He also set us up with a free lagoon cruise the following day and after the cruise he asked us if we'd be willing to attend a time share presentation the following day. We agreed and subsequently spent almost 3 hours (it was supposed to be 90 minutes with breakfast) the following morning listening to one of their sales people (we missed breakfast). Contrary to their initial promise that we would leave with a smiley face and whenever we decided to say NO, the sales pitch would stop, we were hit with a second backup salesperson. We ended up walking out (no smiley face) with the sales person running after us to give us $40 hotel credit for our time. Our vacation time is worth much more than that. Now, having said that, I can honestly say that this was the only bad experience we had for the entire week. We had a great time at the GR Solaris. The food was good, the drinks were plentiful and the employees were out of this world. The recreation staff was outstanding and there seemed to be something going on all hours of the day at the pools. We attended 2 dinner theaters while we were there, Mexican night and International Night. Both had outstanding buffet meals with everything from soup to nuts. We found the room to be well air-conditioned, however everything was still a little damp when we left. But hey, it's Mexico! It's hot and it's humid. By the way, the beach area is rocky and not the best around. The hotel was only 50% occupied so there was no trouble getting lounge chairs at any of the pools. My advice to the reader is; know that they will try to sell you a time share (did I mention they send a bottle of cheap champagne to your room) and deal with it any way you want. But don't let it spoil the great time you can have here. The staff is out of this world and they go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. My wife and I will be going back there again for sure.

My best friend and I stayed at the GR Solaris May 11-14. The hotel and it's staff were wonderful. Our room was perfect and overlooked the ocean. We ate at Marco Polo's every night because a different cuisine was served each night and the food was fabulous. It seemed like the staff went out of their way to make sure we were always comfortable and pleased with our accommodations. We did suggest to the hotel staff that they install heavier shower curtains because the bathroom floor gets very wet and slippery. We also suggested they put up some more umbrellas around the pool for fair skinned people like us. Other than those two small suggestions, we considered our stay to be an excellent one, and look forward to going back again.

Since we leaned heavily on this site in making our decision, I felt it only fair to post a review of our trip.

We just returned Sunday 5/15 from 4 days at the GR Solaris. Our expectations were exceeded in every area. The hotel itself is new and spotless. The staff was constantly cleaning all over the whole facility. The food was excellent, especially lobster night at the outdoor restaurant and Italian at Marco Polo. We are still stunned over the lack of crowds in the restaurants. Granted, we were on a different schedule than the party crowd (we had breakfast about 8, lunch at noon and dinner by 7 every night) and there was NOBODY in the restaurants. We were afraid we wouldn't get in to Marco Polo, but it was deserted. The only drawback was I had to put on pants for an hour!

The breakfast and lunch menus were somewhat repetitive, but it was never a problem for us. For the price, we felt we more than got our money's worth.

One tip which we discovered about calling home. We agree with everyone who says to take the bus - 6.5 pesos ($0.65 US) is a bargain. We rode to Plaza La Isla mall a few miles away for some shopping. At the mall we found an internet cafe which included phones with direct 10-digit dial to the US for $0.50 a minute.

Also, thank you to all the reviewers who tipped us to stay away from our vacation "representative". We were alert and were never cornered for the time share presentation.

We hope to be back next year and may even take the kids.

We stayed at the GR Solaris April 25 trough April 30. We absolutely loved it. Food was very good (not great), service was excellent. Stocked mini-fridge (Corona, bottled water, and soda). We recommend an ocean front room. From our balcony we were able to see the ocean, pool and the beautiful landscape of the GR Solaris. When we wanted to go up to the room and chill out for awhile, we were still able to see all the activities the staff had to offer. We brought our 8 year old child with us. She loved it as well. We never ate at Marco Polo because it was a sit down dinner. We instead went to the buffets they offered, That way we all had a choice of foods to eat. Also they weren't as strict of the dress code. You were able to wear nice shorts and sandals. The staff worked day and night to make sure everyone was well taking care of and having a good time. Room service was great.

My wife and I just got back from a 4 day stay at the GR Solaris. Overall had a great time. Also noted that they couldn't have been more than half full.. must've been why we got a relaltively good deal to stay there. The place is brand new.

We arrived early on a Wednesday and checked in early (our room was ready) with no hassles and a free upgrade to an oceanfront room on the first floor (without even asking for it). Lobby area was upscale and immaculate as this place just opened six months ago. Talked to our concierge who didn't make a timeshare pitch (thankfully) and was generally helpful.

Back to the room upgrade... the first floor had HUGE, and I mean huge, balconies that not only had space for chairs but also lay-down chairs for sunbathing. Very nice!! Only the first floor has these.. so ask for them if you can!!! Rooms were very clean and brand new. Showers were nice but the shower curtains didn't contain much water so be careful on the wet tile floors. Also had heard about thin wall complaints... didn't have that problem even though we had neighbors. Guess we got lucky.

Pool areas were very nice. Swim up bar in one pool... another pool was the "sports" pool and a third pool tucked away from the action was the "relax" pool. All very nice. Got a couples massage by the relax pool. Also nice.

All bars had BOTH Corona and Dos Equis.. a rarity from what I've heard. Drinks were good. Ask for a double if you think they're weak. No problem.

Food overall was pretty good. Breakfast and lunch were best.. lots of variety. Omelettes made to order, etc... Dinner at Marco Polo was average at best. Service and atmosphere were good but food was below average. Wine at dinner was almost undrinkable and I'm not a wine snob. Didn't go to the dinner show.. heard it was o.k. though.

Beach was o.k. Not a lot of territory between the hotel and the water and it was "red-flagged" every day we were there (meaning don't go in the water due to wave activity). Some people waded in nonetheless. They had lifeguards on duty who actually appeared to be paying attention so that was good.

Grounds were beautiful and staff were very nice. No pushy or rude people except for the lady at the front desk who seemed appauled that we would ask for additional bottles of water be sent to our room. She wouldn't do it by the way which really ticked me off.

OVERALL, we found it very nice and would stay there again.
