We just returned from 7 days at the GR Solaris. We were originally booked for the Royal Solaris. However, when we arrived we were told that the hotel was full and we would be staying at the GR Solaris,a few hundred feet away. Our Olympus van driver told us we had just been upgraded and I have to believe he was right. Looking back, I believe that we were sent to the GR Solaris, not because the Royal was full, but because we were prospects for time shares. When we arrived at the GR Solaris, we were immediately greeted by our "Personal Representative", a young gentleman who bought us drinks before we even got to our room. He swore that it had nothing to do with time shares but it did. He also set us up with a free lagoon cruise the following day and after the cruise he asked us if we'd be willing to attend a time share presentation the following day. We agreed and subsequently spent almost 3 hours (it was supposed to be 90 minutes with breakfast) the following morning listening to one of their sales people (we missed breakfast). Contrary to their initial promise that we would leave with a smiley face and whenever we decided to say NO, the sales pitch would stop, we were hit with a second backup salesperson. We ended up walking out (no smiley face) with the sales person running after us to give us $40 hotel credit for our time. Our vacation time is worth much more than that. Now, having said that, I can honestly say that this was the only bad experience we had for the entire week. We had a great time at the GR Solaris. The food was good, the drinks were plentiful and the employees were out of this world. The recreation staff was outstanding and there seemed to be something going on all hours of the day at the pools. We attended 2 dinner theaters while we were there, Mexican night and International Night. Both had outstanding buffet meals with everything from soup to nuts. We found the room to be well air-conditioned, however everything was still a little damp when we left. But hey, it's Mexico! It's hot and it's humid. By the way, the beach area is rocky and not the best around. The hotel was only 50% occupied so there was no trouble getting lounge chairs at any of the pools. My advice to the reader is; know that they will try to sell you a time share (did I mention they send a bottle of cheap champagne to your room) and deal with it any way you want. But don't let it spoil the great time you can have here. The staff is out of this world and they go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. My wife and I will be going back there again for sure.
