This was our first and probably last trip to Mexico so it's possible a lot of our experience is due to that fact.
First of all, the weather was not very good. On and off t-storms and heavy clouds every day - but that is the time of year. So Plan A (to get some sun) was often shot. My boyfriend and I went on vacation to enjoy each other's company, not participate in endless group activities, so consider that as well when reading this review. We did find things to do however of course (markets), but when the sun finally came out we were no longer poolside - and the weather is extremely hot and humid regardless of rain or shine.
We were on vaca so we wanted to eat when we felt like it and sleep in until we felt like it. Since breakfast ends at 11:30 am and it was cloudy, we didn't think it would be problem to eat at 11. It was. We quickly realized not to wait until the last minute or the food you get is the bottom of the barrel - and they are no longer refilling anything. I disagree with this policy. People are right - breakfast is the best. But maybe it's something about Mexico or maybe it was this hotel - everything seemed to be lacking flavor. Pancakes were not right, nothing was - except bacon. Dairy is different as well so even my coffee with cream and sugar was not the same.
Don't think we went to Cafe Solaris for lunch. Rosmarinus was often closed due to weather since it's basically outside. Ate there once and it was ok, about the same as above. If there is lettuce and salad dressing you will be ok. Otherwise again, food was not very good. The point of being at an all inclusive is the food, correct? I'm not a food snob eating at high class restaurants in the states every nite. But I left hungry - let's put it this way....could not wait to get to the Burger King at the airport during our connection home.
We thought, ok - let's do Marco Polo - got to be high class right? Wrong. Closes at 9:30 - got there at 9 - was able to get dinner ordered (scraps at salad bar however). BUT - the house lights came up bright as could be at 9:30. Gee I guess you want us to hurry, eat and leave huh? Also - I had French onion soup and I am positive it was Progresso from the can - with a chunk of extremely stale bread and cheez that did not melt (I told you the dairy is funny). My seafood conconction was ok but the "gourmet" portion was so small I was - you guessed it - still hungry. Also, I know instant potatoes when I taste them, regardless if they are fancy shaped. My boyfriend ordered the wild cornish hen - what are you picturing in your head right now? Well what he got I would bet was a parakeet or one of the birds that fly around at the pool.
Again, I don't know if this is Mexico or GR Solaris. Never had Mexican food once - where was that? I love Mexican food - and I think the Mexicans should stick to trying to prepare that.
Stocked fridge? 3 cans of soda, 3 bottled water, and 3 beers (not even full size beers, they were the split size). Is that a stocked fridge to you? Ask for more? Not our delivery person - 3 of each per day was the limit. Am I going to tip this guy to see if he will break the limit? I don't think so.
Room service - again because we were hungry and desperate due to hours of other places. Not much on the menu at all and when it does come, the food is just gross. I mean they try with presentation, etc but it was awful tasting.
Air Conditioning - bought a sweatshirt it was so cold in our room. Open the door to the balcony and the humidity mixed with the a/c is a bad bad thing. Everything gets damp - pools of dampness. Even when you turn it off it's coming out. We figured out by the end to close the vents. Floors are tile with small navy blue area rugs next to the bed - which were never vaccuumed - yuck.
Yes the walls were thin but didn't hear much over the a/c. Here and there but not enough for it to matter. The problem however with the adjoining rooms was the fact that the door jams are not fitted well and you can see thru the cracks between the door and the frame to the other room - same for the front door into your room from the hall.
Not a lot of English speaking going on either - yes I know it was Mexico but it made me feel vulnerable. From the moment you get thru immigration at the airport there are 50 Mexicans after you to sell you something or serve you to get a tip, everywhere you go. They all think that if you are an American on vaca you are a millionaire. The haggling got annoying. I kind of felt let down and that everything is a big rip off.
We also did the snorkeling and Cozumel trips booked thru Aqua World at the hotel. Make sure you are going to have good weather - we had to cancel one day and got out the next luckily - because they were not going to credit anything and we were not going snorkeling in lightening.
This hotel is at the end of the strip so it's not walking distance to anything. My boyfriend wanted nothing to do with the bus (not air conditioned) so we took cabs everywhere. It works but it gets to be a pain. You have to make sure you ask how much first - after you have the bell hop arrange for one to pull up - so you have to tip both these guys (for the way back too). And every taxi driver thought because we were American that meant we liked rap music and they blasted it for you (they all have CD's with American music and they want to please you so you tip them). We just laughed about it but it got old after a while when you are cabbing it maybe 2x per day. Everything was about $9-$13 each way (up to the markets and Senor Frogs).
Thankfully we were not bothered once by any time share person or this review would have been really ugly!
For a week, to fly from the northeast USA, this trip cost us about $3500 and it was not worth that at all.
