Ok, here's the deal. I stayed in the Grand Caribe Real in 2008 and had a fantastic time, all in all our stay was faultless - staff, accomodation, food, entertainment everything was awesome.

But here comes the however, this year we had many problems, some minor, some not so. Because of the influenza outbreak, a lot of the hotels in Cancun have taken the small number of tourists as an opportunity to do maintence work. The season has picked up much quicker than expected meaning that a lot of the hotels are now building sites and our room was no exception.

On arrival, the toilet didn't work and although this was fixed immediately, we then discovered that the shower didn't work, the sink filled up but then wouldn't empty when there was no plug in it and the toilet again didn't work. At one time, we had 8 maintenance men trying to resolve the problem and it took them a grand total of 4 hours to get things working again, during which they they flooded the bathroom and the bottom of our wardrobe.

Noise levels at times were extreme, again because of the maintenance, it was occasionally so bad that even when the TV was on full volume you still couldn't hear it. We also complained on more than one occasion about the continous smell of wet paint through the airconditioning. After complaining the work usually moved on to another area of the hotel for 24 hours, but then would return to our floor again the very next day.

The only other really big moan would be about reception staff. The majority are polite and helpful but the minority are in a whole other category. Because of the problems in our room, i asked for us to move and was offered a room on the 2nd overlooking the carpark...not quite the same as what we already had (top floor lagoon view). Whilst speaking to one reception staff, another busted across and said to the first in spanish that we either had the room on floor two or nothing at all. She didn't realise that I spoke fluent spanish!!!!

I don't want to be all negative, so here is the good stuff. The food is fantastic, not a single complaint during the two weeks. Drinks are NOT watered down and they aren't stingy on alcohol and if you are there long enough and you are pleasant enough with the staff you will get extra special treatment. Tipping isn't needed as long as you are polite and friendly with them.

Finding a single speck of dirt anywhere is hard to accomplish (even with the maintenance work) staff are cleaning 24/7 and everywhere is spotless. During the day, the sports and entertainment team work very hard to make sure that there is always something to do regardless of your age, so a special mention to Miguel, Dany, Bierley, Jesus, Alejandra, Esteban and anyone else whose name i can't remember. On a final note with staff, ladies watch out for a waiter named Diego in the Gaviotas restaurant. He likes to try and chat up a different woman each week and i was the target for the 2nd week of june! He can get very annoying, so if u think you've been targeted, give him the cold shoulder and within a day to two days he gets the message.

Would go back there again, but i would make sure that the hotel was free of renovation!!!

Been there for one week in june, all inclusive plan, very good rate maybe due to the swine flue ( go there.. overblown!!! ). We had a ocean view room upgraded to ocean front for 30 usd per day. Very nice room with 2 balconies and a large bathroom. The view was awasome. The resort is not very high.. 4 floors wich is very nice , 2 pools one very big in front of the beach and other one called tranquil pool wich has a swim bar and sushi pit stop :) The pool area is very big with many chairs.. and perfect service directly to your chair. The beach unfortunately is not as you expect whe you see the hotel. Sand is nice but very very rocky. Restaurants are various.. buffet resturant like albatros is open almost all day.. a lot of variety and all the food is very fresh. Maria's mexican restaurant is also nice and Il pescatore is just nice ( i am italian so maybe i cant enjoy italian food abroad).
Finally i can suggest this hotel expecially if you find very cheap rates.
Another good point is the location.. few steps to the nightclubs and to the 5th ave.. and in you need a top restaurant go to see my reviews about restaurant in playa...

This was my second time staying at the Gran Caribe. The first time I went in Feb. with a group of 23 people, family and friends. We ranged in all different age groups, and all had an amazing time. There is something there for everyone. Great rooms, good food, amazing drinks, a great beach, and the best staff ever! We had such a good time, I went back in June with a friend. Once again we had a great time thanks to the entertainment staff. They were all awesome! Miguel inparticular made our stay so much fun. He was always making sure we were happy, and having fun. Miguel makes sure you are safe and taken very good care of when you are out with him at the clubs at night. He is always dancing and having a great time, no matter where or when you see him. Definitely the life of the party. You can't not be having fun when he is around! A great guy, and an awesome part of the entertainment staff! We can't wait to get back there!

I just returned from an 8 day trip to Cancun with my 18 year old daughter and stayed at Gran Caribe Real Resort & Spa. Have been to Cancun 5 times and these were by far the best accommodations- previously stayed in all 5-Star Hotels. The property was spotless, the service was remarkable- everyone extremely friendly and helpful, and thankfully (my daughter is a very picky eater) the food was fabulous throughout the resort with a great variety at all of the buffets. The waitstaff could not be more attentive, you never had to wait for anything, they would always be there to assist you in carrying your food back to your seats from the buffets and you never had to wait for someone to offer to serve you a drink anywhere on the property. Loved that we only had to make a reservation at one restaurant at the resort- even that was easy to do.We both thoroughly enjoyed the night shows- by far the most professional we have come across. We spent a day at Xcaret and my daughter commented that she though the hotel performances were quite comparable to the Night Show we saw at Xcaret. We spent our days on the beach under the supervision of a lifeguard at all times. During every other stay in Cancun, we spent our days at the pools- the beaches were not that inviting or well groomed. We stayed in a Junior Oceanfront Suite, perfect size for two travelers, which had a beautiful view of the beach every time of the day and night, no noise to disturb our sleep at all. The mini bar was restocked each day and the housekeeping staff was friendly and thorough- did not have one complaint. Anything you needed or wanted was available right there or a quick walk away. It is conveniently located between the Mall and the Marketplace-important when traveling with a teenage girl. We both felt very comfortable and thoroughly enjoyed our vacation- very sad to go home. If I had to say one negative thing about the resort, it would be that the 24 hour food bar could use improvement- was not very appetizing but the restaurants were open late enough for the two of us, would have no influence on our decision to return. Can't wait to go back!
