My Girlfriend and I stayed at the Royal in June, 09. Having researched the hotel before we went, I kinda had a good idea on what to expect, both good and bad! Prior to departure I attempted to book in using the hotel's on-line facitily on their web-site, however this was unsuccessful.
On arrival at the Royal, after an extremely long flight from the UK and then the nightmare that was Cancun Airport, all we wanted to do was check in and get to out room. Our bags were taken from the coach by consierge and we were directed to the check-in desk. We were both sat down and eventually offered a glass of Champagne, nothing in Cancun moves at any real pace! On checking-in, I was informed that the hotel had no rooms with a King Size bed available, which I had booked, however a room with this bed would become free in 2 days time. However, if I wanted to UPGRADE I could immediately have a room with a King Size bed. Having previously done my research, I knew that all the rooms in this hotel were to a high standard, so politely refused the UPGRADE invitation. It should also be noted that the price for the UPGRADE originally quoted for the 2 weeks was $250 however on pressing the price dramatically dropped to $140.
The room was fantastic. 2 double beds instead of 1 King Size, however this did not bother us in the slightest. All rooms in the hotel have a Sea View and after speaking to people who did UPGRADE there was absolutely no difference in the room, the only difference being a place at the Chef's Plate restaurant and an alleged i-pod, however many people found it extremely difficult in sourcing this from reception and housekeeping alike!! The room was always kept extremely clean and the turn down service was a mini room clean also, new towels etc. The jacuzzi was also fantastic, however took about 15 minutes to fill up! Samsung flat screen TV and DVD player also in the room along with mini bar, which probably could have been re-stocked more often that it actually was. Minor disappointment was the fact that out room overlooked the lobby so it could get noisy during the show's etc.
The restaurant's and Bar in the Hotel were excellent. All restaurant's served Gourmet food and honestly, there was something for everyone. The Bar was a slight disappointment due to the fact that it is actually just one round bar, sectioned off and named. Therefore one bar equals four bars, if you know what I mean! However the drinks selection is good, premium spirits, but if you want them, you have to ask for them by name! Lager and Beer was ok, however I was expecting a Corona or 2, but the Hotel didnt stock Corona!
The Hotel was always extremely clean, and the staff all very attentive and friendly. The staff do take very kindly to tips, therefore we did tip them almost every night. Roberto from Asiana, Oscar from the Bar and Omar from Nightly Animation all deserve a mention, they were excellent!
Market 28 which is the local flea market, situated in Downtown Cancun, was awful. Nothing but tacky rubbish that I honestly could not bring myself to buy, avoid it at all costs!!
In conclusion, on arrival at the hotel, you will definately be advised to UPGRADE, however, there is absolutely no need and is an added unnecessary expense. All rooms are exceptional and all have a Sea View.
Have fun at the Royal, Cancun!!!
