My boyfriend and I stayed at the Royal from June 13-June 19th for his 25th birthday. Upon arrival to the royal, our bags were taken and he were lead to one of the check in tables and given a glass of champagne each. We met with Armando who went through the whole introduction including telling us what was included and what wasn't as well as giving us our bracelets and asking us how we heard about the hotel. We then were told that there were no rooms with a king bed available but there would be one available in three days. From reading all the past reviews on trip advisor I knew to expect this but since we were going during the swine flu scare I didn't think we would have a problem. Boy was I wrong. We, as well as everyone else that has been through this was offerred to upgrade for more $$! I was furious! Here we were after traveling all day, on my boyfriend's birthday and we could not get the room we booked in February. (somewhat) fortunately my boyfriends' Aunt is the Vice President of the travel agency we used so we quickly got her on the phone. She explained to us that unfortuantely this is how the industry operates and not just this hotel. She advised us to go with the upgrade. After sitting there for an hour and speaking with the manager twice we upgraded to the corner sweet which we originally told was an extra $70 per night but was then given at $20 extra per night.....surprise surprise! Needless to say it was a very frustrating experience and be prepared to go through it. We took it as far as we could and eventually just brushed it off.
The service and the food at this hotel quickly got us back into vacation mode. All of the workers are bilingual and speak English very well. We ate lunch at Pelicano's almost everyday because I wanted pizza and my boyfriend wanted seafood. We had breakfast at Spice every morning because it was buffet. They have waffles, pancakes, french toast and omelettes made to order. We had dinner at Asiana (Hibatchi twice...it was delicious!), Maria Marie (good for steaks) and Pelicano's makes for a romantic dinner because you can grab a table that looks directly onto the beach. We were able to eat at Chef's Plate since we had an upgraded room. The dinner was fabulous and we met some really nice people. The drinks were good (get the electric lemonade) and there are liquor bottles right in your room! There is also a coffee shop with all kinds of coffees and teas with yummy treats and a chocolate fondue fountain with strawberries that were usually out during the day. We had room service (which is included and is available 24/7) for breakfast one morning.
I read on previous reviews that the beach is quite small. This is true but we did not find it to be an inconvenience and were always able to find a comfortable spot. We received our own poolside cabana with our upgraded room which was nice but we did not have any trouble finding other seats when we wanted to sit in the sun. There was always a girl walking around asking us if we wanted drinks which was nice because we didn't even have to get up.
We booked through funjet vacations which was partnered through Lomus Travel. Lomus booked us with our para sailing and party hopper package (highly recommend both). There is Margaritaville and Pat O'Briens right across the street and everything else is a quick bus ride away. Take the R1 or the R2 and it's 15 pesos one way for two people. You can get change at the front desk.
In the end we did have a really great vacation but be prepared to go through the ordeal in the beginning. It is wrong what they do and we took it as far as we could but we weren't going to let it ruin our weeks stay.
