Stayed at the Grand Oasis Viva Cancun, Mexico from February 26th-March 5th 2009
The resort was modern (plasma screen TV in our room, marble washrooms), very clean, our room had a prefect view to the ocean and pool area. The food as expected was "ok" nothing to write home about (only had two a al carte restaurants, snack bar and 1 main buffet) and of course people should not drink their water (bottled water was fine …..buy water from across the street cheaper then in the resort).
Apparently there are 2 bracelets colors; black & purple and apparently black is better. I did not know what this meant but I had the black bracelet and we receive a mini bar in our room a different colored towel, possibly nicer room and think that’s about it.
The mini bar in our room unfortunately did not work and the drinks were warm – hey we can’t get everything we want in life. The weather was great and the ocean was crystal clear. Spoke to a lot of people who stayed there & I noticed that people who had stayed in 5 star resorts ... properties like Riu or Iberostars were a little disappointed and the others who had not loved their stay as they had nothing to compare it to.
Overall our stay was quite good … its more like a party hotel – lots of teens or kids ranged from 18-25yrs old, mind you there were older people as well. Not sure if it’s the best place for families with small children however they did have a little pool attached to the adult pool which my 3yrd old son loved.
It’s a "stay at 1, play at 8" yet the closest Oasis to our hotel was a 10mins bus ride (Oasis Palm Beach – more geared for families with young kids) and the others were approx. 40 mins away (closer to the downtown strip).
The staff were very friendly..... you tip they are your best if you are still treated ok. I got sick our 2nd day not too sure from what I believe it was from drinking a beverage mixed with their ice ... I am also pregnant so it can have something to do with that as my husband and son were fine ....mind you we stayed away from all the seafood, any items washed with their water, etc.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION - very disappointing:
Our tour operator was Conquest Vacations. When we arrived at the airport in Cancun our flight was approx. 20 minutes late and no one from Conquest Vacations was there to greet us at the airport. A gentleman first directed us to a booth where a man was trying to sell a free item to attend a 90mins presentation and of course we said we were not interested. From there we looked around and saw no one from Conquest Vacations. We were directed to speak to several airport officials (uniform and walkie talkies) and at the end of it all - we told no one from Conquest was there to pick-up us up and these gentleman would arrange for transportation and the cost was $70.00 U.S. I thought the price was OUTRANGEOUS as I had been to Cancun before & new the hotel was no more then 30mins from the airport and new it should cost no more then $20.00… however we were tired, it was night, I was with my 3yr old son, no one else was around and you just want to get there. So we went with the gentleman (who claimed he worked for Conquest) – he also told us that our money would returned at the hotel. Of course when we arrived at the hotel the clerks there said I had to speak to the Conquest representatives who arrived the next day.

The next day the Conquest representative said that we had been scammed and I would have to take up the matter when I returned to Toronto. She said that some other people came in on the same flight and were picked-up however she did not know what happened to us. This matter upset me greatly, due to the danger …. In this day in age we could have been kidnapped … it was very scary ….myself being 5months pregnant, with a 3 yrs old son and my husband. This is my 3rd time to Cancun and my 8th vacation and never had I ever gone to a destination without being greeted by the tour operator. Not to mention you do not want to begin the start of your vacation feeling cheated or scammed. I want to inform others so they keep their eyes open.....we were out $70.00 better money then our lives.

Other then this incident again all the staff and people we came across were very friendly, so it would not be fair to knock Mexico or Cancun based on this one situation.
I also do not want to knock the resort. I generally do not return to the same resorts however we walked into the Riu Palace (we stayed their in the Mayan Riveria for our honeymoon @ it was amazing) and it was beautiful here as well.
There is a huge difference between a 4 to 5 star resort in terms of menu selection, entertainment, etc.
All in all we enjoyed our stay and would definalty return to Cancun again in the near future
Have a great trip !!!!!

Stayed here from the 18th of February to the 25th. Arrived at 9:30am and needless to say room was not available until after 3pm. Staff at front desk don't speak english very well and don't explain anything to you. We had the 'black bracelets' which were supposed to give you access to more on the resort than the 'purple bracelets' but who knows. The 'purple bracelets' seemed to have the run of the place.
Rooms: quite large , bathroom with two sinks, but very cold and damp with no fan. when you took a shower the humidity stayed in the room all day. Housekeeping was good, although they never showed up the second day. Bar fridge was always stocked.
Food: The buffet restaurant was ok the first few days but after that...YUK Only ate at the Mediterranean a la carte restaurant other than the buffet and quite frankly I think they cart the food from the buffet . Nothing mediterranean about it. We ate out along the strip just to get some variety.
Staff: Not so friendly anywhere. Look miserable and sick of tourists. If you don't tip you get no service and they seem to have a secret code to know who tips and who doesn't. They let each other know. It's a catch-22. Lousy service=no tip No tip=Lousier service.
Beach was beautiful, but you couldn't get a beach chair unless you got up at 5am. Found out at the end that if you tip an employee they'll reserve a chair for you, but whatever. Sat in the dirt most of the time. Again chairs were taken up by 'purple bracelets'.
It's a pretty dead resort all in all. Not much happening. Unless you take tours you'll be bored to death.
Would I go back: No way
Nobody anywhere does anything without a tip, but it's MEXICO..

Me and my boyfriend stayed at the grand oasis viva beach last may... and it was a great time.
The rooms have equipped with flat screen tvs and double sinks in the bathroom with marble counters. The down size of the room is no balcony unless you stay in the oasis viva beach but the rooms are as nice. The oasis viva beach adn the grand oasis viva beach are attatched liek most other oasis properties just in the grand there is a steak house which can only be used if you are staying on they grand property.

The food was alright.. its not a huge resort so it only had 2 restaurants and one buffet.. the breakfasts were pretty standard every morning with an omlette station etc.. but lunch and dinner could use some work.. we only stayed for a week and by the end of the week we were sick of the food..

The ocean and pool activity was great there was always something to do and the beach was amazing you walk out so far and it still only be up to you waist. The weather was extremely hot and sunny everyday.. i like the heat so it wasnt bad for me but if you cant take the heat going in may would not be the best month maybe closer to Feb or March.

The nightlife was INSANE in cancun.. kinda like vegas cept not so glam.. the best club by far was coco bongos a great night for any age!!! We also went to the city, senior frogs. The night clubs dont really start getting busy until 10pm or later so your best bet is to find a bartendar in the resort and stick with him our favorite was Octavio! he got us pretty hammered every night before we went out.!! There is tons of young partiers in cancun so its never hard meeting people to go out with me and my bf made friends with 2 girls that were staying in our resort and joined them most nights on town.

We only did one excursion we took the pirate ship dinner.. it was very entertaining and great fuN! you get a steak and lobster dinner and tons of entertainment the whole night. I highley recomend it any age group!

All in all it was a really good vacation and would recomend it to young singles wanting to go and out party cuz its in a great location or anyone who loves to lounge on the beach all day!

Just returned from 5 days at the Grand Oasis Viva Beach. Really loved the location of the hotel. It had a beautiful beach and the rooms were clean. There weren't too many families with young children. There were also not too many "spring breakers". Not too much of a party atmosphere. As a group of 30-somethings, it was just what we were looking for.
The only complaint is that the food was just so-so. We were able to eat in all of the restaurants because we were in the "Grand" part of the hotel. Probably the best meal we had was in the Steak House, which is the extra restaurant we got with the more expensive plan. The breakfasts, were great! However, don't expect to get a decent dessert. Every one we tried the whole vacation was bland and not very sweet.

My husband and I were looking for a relaxing, romantic getaway. We had our hearts set on Mayan Riviera but were talked into Cancun last minute....do we ever wish we had not listened!!! We selected Grand Oasis Viva Beach based on the promo material quoting it as a 167 room hotel that is relaxing....The hotel is more like 700 rooms with amenities for a 167 room hotel. Although the rooms were clean they were nothing special. It was the loudest hotel we had ever stayed at. If you didn't get a lounge chair by 9am you were out of luck for the entire day. Kids EVERYWHERE. The party by the pool (where our room faced) usually lasted until 4am. Definitely NOT relaxing. The most upsetting aspect was the lies on the website describing this laid back, upscale hotel. I felt like we were in some bad Springbreak movie....EXTREMELY disappointing!
