As soon as you arrive to Cancun Airport people start bothering you with guided tours, resorts and other scams. I understand they have to make business but this is ridiculous you are suppose to be on vacation, and you have to fight these thieves. They are rude and won't go away with just a "no thank you ". Prices are outrageous everywhere, a theme park is $70 per person (for example Xcaret) that's more expensive than Oralndo's theme parks ( and employees salaries are probably a tenth of Magic Kingdom's ) .
Taxi cabs want to charge you more than in U.S., 200 pesos (US$18) for a 5 mile ride, give me a break!.
Forget about local food or local anything, Cancun is not Mexico not even Playa del Carmen is, all you will see is American franchises or some hype restaurants owned by who knows what drug lord from Juarez Cartel.
Beaches are just ok, most of them are very rocky so you can't safely swim.
They so called paradise Isla Mujeres only have a few tiny beaches. Most of the Island is dirty, poor and full of these thieves very popular in all Cancun and Yucatan. As soon as you get out of the ferry in the Island you will see not less than 10 of these guys offering you a golf cart for rent at US$60, but they don't tell you that a golf car is worthless because there's nothing to see in Isla Mujeres and the only beaches are at walking distance from the port where you just arrived.
In my opinion Cancun has nothing to offer but inflated prices, dust, scams and rude people. Go somewhere else, if you are in US just go to the Virgin Islands or The Bahamas is 100 times better and now even cheaper.
