My Husband and I stayed at Barcelo Maya Colonial for 5 days. We had an excellent stay. The rooms are very nice, exceptionally clean, and the maid service is very good. The mattress is nnot the most comfortable though. The food was excellent. I was a bit worried when I heard the word "buffet" but it was excellent. They have everything you can imagine. We went to Capri and The Mexican Restaurant, both were very good, but in all honesty I preffered the buffet because I felt more comfortable and did not have to wait on the waiter to get me a drink (and I could get seconds!) The beach was beautiful-we bever had a problem getting a chair. The water is gorgeous. I was afraid it would be rocky because of some of the other reviews I have read but there were very few rocks-the bottom was beautiful soft white sand. Lots of fish! The weather while we were there early August was perfect. It was sunny everyday-humid too, but we're used to that being from Florida. We took 3 tours. We first went to Chichen Itza. Excellent tour. Our guide was awesome (very friendly) they have all you can drink beer on the bus too! (= It is a little bit of a drive but they take you to lunch with a dance show-very cool, and then to the big cenote. The water was cool, and exceptionally clear, again lots of fish. Word of advice-jump off the cliff! (= It was a rush! We went twice! Once we got to Chichen Itza we were given a tour for about an hour and then left on our own to do as we please. The grounds are amazing-it was a truly awesome experience. Whenever you go on tours there are always flea markets on the grounds so try to do your souveneir shopping there as you can bargain and you are supporting local villages. Then we went to Tulum/Xel-Ha. I did not care too much for this trip. The reason being that you only get to be in Tulum for 1 hour! Hardly enough time to explore the grounds. We basicly went swimming for 30 minutes took a couple pictures of the ruins and had to run back to the bus! It's like a 15-20 minute walk back to the bus! Also if you want to videotape (at Tulum or Chichen Itza) You have to pay 3.50 (USD) before you go in. You can get a voucher at the front. It's free to take cameras in though. Xel-Ha was the part of the trip that I did not really care for. Your ticket pays for all food and drinks though (beer and cocktails too) but the lagoon is very murky, if you are going to go in swim closer to the shore where the wobbly bridge is and it is much better. Clearer water and more fish. Other than that it's more of a place for kids. Oh and you have to put a 20.00USD deposit down for snorkel gear which you get back when you return it. The next trip we did was with Aquatic Adventures. They took us to an inlet (similar to Xel-Ha but much more beautiful with clear water and more fish) we even got to swim with a sea turtle! And then they took us to a closed cenote underground(awesome) and an open cenote-also beautiful. You are also taken to lunch (included in price) the tour guides were very accomadating and friendly-spoke quite good english too. the only drawbacks that I can really say we had is that there will be a bit of a language barrier-most of the people speak pretty good english but sometimes you have to clarify what it is you want. Although everyone at the hotel was friendly enough to us. Also expect to tip most people! On the tours, at the hotel, taxi drivers etc. We did not tip every time we got a drink or had linens changed, but they do appreciate a tip. The girl that works at the swim up bar REALLY deserves it (Padla?) very nice-works like a horse though! (=We tipped her 5usd at the end of our trip And we tipped the taxi drivers and tour guides/drivers.But there were people at the airport who would carry your bags like 10 feet and expect a tip! I don't think that warrants a tip. But It really doesn't amount to that much in the end and they really do deserve it (most the time) Also whenever you buy something (this only happened to us outside the hotel) when you get change back COUNT it! Sometimes you will get less back by mistake. I really do not know whether or not it was on purpose but it happened to us twice. also you will have to put a deposit down for most things (like snorkel gear at the resort) but you get it back when you turn it in. Most the trips though (excluding Xel-Ha) include gear in the price). Other than that we had an amazing time and would love to go back (for more than 5 days next time!) and would recommend Barcelo to anyone. A tip-try the "Mexican Flag" at the bar! Oh- one more tip the bars serve drinks in small cups so you may want to bring a big thermos/mug with you so you don't have to refill as much. We had a great time! Thank you to all the staff we had a great stay!
