The hotel has a lot of history - not very often did we have the opportunity to stay in a hotel with cloisters that have painted walls, an inner courtyard, and is the birthplace of a famous person (count Zeppelin). It was rather cool for July, so we did not miss the air conditioning all that much. I even visited the sauna/steam room in the evening - very nicely kept, and no other visitors. Free bottled mineral water there, which I have not seen before in a hotel. Due to the proximity of the lake they seem to have an insect problem; even spray is provided. Unfortunately, the screen in front of the window had a hole ... but since it rained that night, no insect danger. That also meant we could not use the terrace, but we visited the bar and found it nice. The barkeeper was overworked and took a long time for our order.
Breakfast had all the usual and necessary, although it did not have the 5-star extras one hopes for (eggs made to order, etc.).
One disadvantages for us cyclists: No covered bycicle stands (or underground parking), so the bikes got wet in the night.

“great hotel”

Having read the other reviews we were a bit worried about our choice of hotel but we would say great hotel, great base for touring and would stay here again. This is a hotel for relaxing. It is quiet but has a lovely atmosphere. We had the most beautiful large room on the third floor with a balcony.and a fantastic view. Worth paying tne extra for!. Germany does have a lot of rain but we were prepared for this and brought warm clothes and waterproofs. Dinner is served on the terrace when it is warm and dry unfortunately we only ate out once in our 6 days. The food is lovely. Beautifully served with attention to detail which I like on holoiday! Konstanz is a great base for touring but some places are difficult to get to because of being Germany, Austria and Switzerland but we managed by careful use of mostly trains and occasionally boats and managed to see most things. Worth seeing are the Rhine Falls - accessible by train or boat. Island of Mainau accessible by boat but we borrowed free bikes from the hotel and cycled, about 5 miles. Meersburg by boat and Lindau by boat and then train. It was good making our own way to these places but tours are organized but are more expensive and take longer. We enjoyed the challenge! We will return but may hire a car next time! This hotel is worth the cost we think!

This hotel is lovely - on a small island right on the lake. The property appeared to be nearly empty - but the rate was still quite high (200 euro/night). The room was spacious and clean. The property could use a bit of an update, particularly in the Zeppelin bar.

Ask for a room with a lake view.

If you stay at this hotel, be sure to visit their very nice and clean sauna room. There is a tanning bed, a steam room and sauna.

We stayed at the Steigenberger for one week at the end of August. We were delighted with the hotel and have nothing but praise - except perhaps a niggle that the restaurant service was on the slow side and the huge square feather pillows were not to our taste. Our room was a garden view on the 3rd floor. It was large and had everything we could have needed including a huge umbrella should the weather be inclement - it was!! A large and quiet fan was provided as the room had no air con. We found the history associated with the hotel most interesting - monastery, birthplace of the Zeppelin inventor etc. The terrace area and lake bathing area were excellent. Unfortunately the lake was unusually cold during that week. Konstanz itself is an excellent base for boat and rail journeys. The local train station has one side of the platform in Germany and the other in Switzerland so was excellent for day trips . Don't miss visiting Stein am Rhein and Meersberg. The Rhine falls are spectacular and so easy to get to by train.

We stayed for 2 nights at the end of June 06 as a result of other comments seen here. Its a nice hotel but has one major problem.
If you get a room on the 4th floor it is infact the converted loft. The daytime temp was 28c on the first day & 24c on the second. The loft area is very hot & retains the daytime heat. The rooms have air conditioning but can not cope with this quite normal daytime temp. We complained & were moved to another room which was cooler but we still found sleeping difficult.
I have stayed in numerous hotels in Europe this room was the hottest I have ever stayed in which has airconditioning in the room. For that reason I will not be returning.
On a final note the following day I stopped in the Holiday inn Geneva airport the daytime temp was 32c, the room was nice & cool & less than half the price.
