We selected the Excellence Riviera Cancun as the destination for our honeymoon (2 weeks commencing 22nd April) after recommendations from a travel agent. We had been considering some other resorts in the same region, but the very knowledgeable agent at Blue Bay Travel informed us that the Excellence was a far better property for the same price.
I would recommend Blue Bay Travel or their sister company Caribbean Warehouse to anyone from the UK looking to stay in this region. The agents we spoke to were all really well informed, and the eventual price we paid for our holiday (roughly £1,300 each for a fortnight including flights, transfers, in flight meals) was far better than offered by any other agents.
The flight from Manchester took around 10 hours, but was not as bad as many economy flights with reasonable legroom and decent in flight entertainment, although you have to pay £5 to upgrade to the interactive movies service. Without the upgrade you are limited to a small range of films and tv shows. The in flight food was above average, although as with all package flights drinks were very expensive.
When we reached Cancun, it took quite a while to get through customs. Stepping into the hot Mexican air was a welcome shock having left a cold, damp UK in the morning. Once we'd cleared security, we were met by our representative from 'Jumbo Tours', who took us straight to the hotel in an air conditioned minibus. The transfer from the airport takes no more than 20 minutes.
As soon as we stepped off the minibus we were greeted by cool towels and a glass of champagne. This set the tone for 2 weeks of luxury and excellent service...
Our room was on the first floor in block 4. This building has a wonderful view of the spa, and is located quite far (although no more than a few minutes walk) from the main complex of bars and restaurants so is always quiet. The room was just like the pictures on the website - large and spacious, with a 6 foot wide four poster bed, 2 person jacuzzi, wet room, double sinks, comfy sofa and (perhaps most importantly!) well stocked mini bar. We had not upgraded, but even the most basic rooms are very luxurious with high quality fixtures and fittings. The maid service was very efficient, and there was also an evening turn down service. When we returned to our room of an evening, a copy of the 'Excellence Times' would be waiting on the pillow, setting out the opening times of all restaurants and bars on the next day, and the times of the daytime activities and evening entertainment.
As we were on honeymoon, we were greeted by a honeymoon banner on our door, bucket of champagne, and towel swans on the bed. Very romantic!
We enjoyed the breakfast buffet at Barcelona, which included both hot and cold food, a wide range of freshly squeezed juices, and even champagne and vodka to make your own bucks fizz or bloody marys. On a couple of days we had room service breakfast. Room service seemed to be very efficient at any time of day, with food always delivered hot and fresh within 40 mins of placing an order. There is an extensive room service menu which includes breakfast, snacks, starters, mains and desserts. When you are finished with your room service, there is a box outside the room to place the plates in which stops the ants getting in.
As well as room service, there are four lunch options. Barcelona caters for every taste. There are cooking stations when you can have a variety of fish, meats or pasta dishes cooked to your own specification, as well as a buffet including a range of hot and cold dishes, salads, puddings, ice cream - and the list goes on!The Lobster House offers a range of sandwiches and wraps, whilst The Grill has a full three course menu including nachos, burgers, chicken and kebabs. The final lunch option is Oregano, which offers handmade pizzas cooked to order.
Over the space of the fortnight we tried all of the restaurants for dinner other than the Lobster House. We enjoyed all of the restaurants, but our favourites were probably Spice and Chez Isabelle. At Spice we particularly enjoyed the Massaman Curry and Fried Ice-Cream (yum!), and at Chez Isabelle we enjoyed the Chateaubriand so much that on our return visit we couldn't resist having it again.
A full wine list is offered in all restaurants, but appeared to be very expensive, with some wines that we buy in the supermarket at home on offer for at least 5 times more than their retail price. There is an all-inclusive wine list including several red and white wines, one rose wine and champagne. I thought the included wine was fine, and we didn't bother buying any food or drinks beyond those included in the all inclusive package.
The hotel had the best pools I'd ever seen, including a long 'lazy river' with a gentle current which winds all the way around the spa. People do tend to reserve sunbeds, but we never had a problem finding one at about 8.30. As well as normal sunbeds there are also some big double beds by the pool side which were very comfortable! A waiter would regularly walk around the pool taking orders for cocktails and fresh fruit juices. At some times of day, nachos and mini burgers would also be brought around the pool. Considering all this, its not really a big surprise that I put on half a stone over the fortnight!
There are several heated open air jacuzzis which we enjoyed using. The sea was warm although quite stony under foot. The beach is clean and there is also waiter service there.
The highlight of my honeymoon was probably visiting the spa. We enjoyed the hydrotherapy circuit together three times, and also had a couples massage and facials. The therapists were all very good and each session left us feeling very relaxed!
My only criticism of the resort is that some of the advertised activities didn't seem to take place. We went to the advertised locations for table tennis and tennis competitions and neither took place. Our activity that we did participate in and enjoy was the Kitchen Tour. This was a really interesting look behind the scenes and unmissable for anyone who enjoys cooking programmes! It was great to see that all the staff really take pride in their jobs. We saw everything from bread to desserts being made from scratch, and also got to taste a fair few samples along the way!
The evening entertainment was average - nothing particularly spectacular, but fine for passing a couple of hours. The entertainment operates on a one week timetable which might frustrate some people on a two week visit.
Our favourite evening activity was to go to the X Lounge. This is an intimate open air lounge overlooking the sea where you can relax on beds with pillows and blankets, enjoying waiter service under the stars!
We went on the free shopping trip to Cancun. The shops weren't particularly exciting, but fine for getting cheap souveniers to take home, and it was nice to stretch our legs outside of the resort for a few hours! We also paid for an excursion to Tulum and Xel-Ha. There is no shade at Tulum which made for a very hot few hours, but I would highly recommend visiting to see the ruins and experience the spectacular views. Xel-Ha is an all inclusive ecological park where you can snorkel, go down the river on rubber tyres, watching dolphins, or just enjoy the all inclusive food and drink. This was fairly expensive, but a good day out.
Overall we had a wonderful time with no real complaints whatsoever, The service was very good and everyone was happy to help, regardless of whether you tipped them. The resort was very well maintained and every day you would see people painting the walls, trimming the lawns and picking leaves out of the pool. It was a perfect honeymoon destination and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing, indulgent stay in a beautiful location.
