My husband and I spent a week at Marina El Cid with our two girls, ages 9 and 6. We had a fabulous time. Check-in went smoothly, the time-share pitch was not a big deal. We didn't go with the Platinum upgrade and it didn't really make any difference. The front desk staff was very helpful - American Airlines lost all our luggage and we had nothing but the clothes on our backs and bathing suits until late the next day. The staff made repeated phone calls on our behalf trying to locate our bags. When they finally got to the resort, they were delivered to our room right away.
The resort is beautifully maintained and very clean. We had a regular room not a suite - it was huge and also very clean. Housekeeping was very thourough and our housekeeper, Minerva, was a lovely person.
The food was also very good, although, by the end of the week we were generally tired of eating so much. The service at the buffet-style restaurants was usually very good unless we got there just as the mealtime was ending because then the waitstaff would be busy setting up for the next meal. Our favorite was "Alhambra" in the lobby because of the variety of food choices. We got a reservation to "Alcazar" very easily although we thought the food there was just OK.
The ocean and beach were gorgeous and yes, a little rocky. Thanks to some of the suggestions of the reviewers on this site, we were prepared with water shoes. The palapas were easily available.
I do think though that our very positive experience may have had a little to do with the fact that we went in the off-season. If it had been crowded, I could see how things may have been different. I also want to say that we are not Caucasian - we are of Indian descent - and it didn't make any noticeable difference in how the staff treated us (contrary to what one of the reviewers said).
One major downside was the pool. It was disgusting, especially the area by the wet bar, which stunk badly. As mentioned in other reviewers, kids did routinely dump their drinks in the pool and we saw many babies in the pool with no swimmie diapers on. It was nauseating and the hotel needs to do something about it. There was also the occasional smell of sewage in the room that seemed to come out of the drain in the shower, but we put a towel on the drain and that stopped the smell.
