“Hit or miss”

Ocean Coral & Turquesa

Jul 5, 2008
1/2 found this review helpful

My boyfriend and I (26 and 29) stayed here June 21-28. The trip was very hit or miss as far as the hotel went. I had some worries due to bad reviews here and there, but I take all reviews with a grain of salt. This is my 7th AI in Mexico and the Caribean, so that is my comparison! This review may be long, just a fair warning!

Hotel/Grounds/Room:
The hotel is beautiful and the newness shows! The lobby is great- open and modern, with lots of couches and chairs for lounging. The grounds itself are very clean. There is some minor construction going on, barely noticable, and mostly cosmetic anyways. There is tons of vegetation starting to grow and in a few years it will be like a jungle!

The room we had was a deluxe junior suite on the coral side. We joined the H10 club online and emailed a room request and got what we wanted. We had a pool/ocean view, third floor. We never used the jacuzzi. The room was big. Housekeeping came everyday and the fridge was stocked daily also. Our shower did leak a bit, but we just put an extra towel down. No big deal.
There are motion detectors on the fan, but the AC was on when we slept, so no big deal. The AC does turn off when the door is opened, but who cares? Why do you need it on if the door is open? It's too humid to leave the door open anyway! Your floors will get wet! We actually hung our bathing suits in the room to dry and that worked better than leaving them outside.

Pools/Beach:
The pools were nice and well maintained. There were 4 pools. We mostly hung out at the swim-up bar pool. There was also an activity pool, a kids pool(we never went) and a quiet adult pool that our room overlooked. They really need more bars around the resort because the only easily bar available during the day was the swim-up. We brought big insulated mugs, so we were okay there. Also, restrooms are a hike!

The beach is one of the big disapointments here. I was expecting some seaweed from other reviews and I wasn't worried(I mean, it's a beach, right?). But this beach is very dirty! I did see people trying to clean them by hand, but without a raking machine like the other resorts around, it's impossible to keep up with! The ocean itself was also cloudy and full of seaweed. Like I said, a disapoinment.

Food/Bars/Service:
Okay, another low point for me was the food and service in the buffets and restaurants. Like I said, not my first AI, so I think I had realistic expectations. But I was let down. The buffets were small and had about the same food daily. Yes, I always found something, but I was never really satisfied. Also, I would not be annoyed with getting my own drinks liek some said they were(it is a buffet!) but in the am, you need a waiter to get you coffee. A lot of time was spent hunting one down. But then again, some days there as awesome service. You never knew what to expect!

The ala carts wer very good, except for the Japanese. The worst service I have ever had! We waited 15 min to even see a waiter, another 15 for drinks, our food was messed up, and after 1 hr 45 and no dessert yet, we just left.

The Italian was very good, we went twice. Mexican was also good.

Our favorite bar at night was the lobby bar. Jose, Arguelles, Enrique were great. They always remembered us and had a smile or special drink. We did tip, because we both think it's the right thing to do for good service. There was really barely anything to do at night. There was a show, we went once, and it was okay. A disco on site would help a bit. The pool bar at night was okay, bit service was hit or miss here.

All in all, we had a good time. Vacation is what you make of it. But, I think we would have been happier somewhere else. We met a couple who stayed at Sandos Caracol (we thought of staying there but were swayed by the newness of H10) and they loved it. I think in a few years, H10 might be great. But right now, they need more staff and better management. I think the staff wants to do a good job, they just don't have the support. So if you can find a hotel in the sam price range, i'd stick to that!

“we enjoyed our stay, good bargain”

Ocean Coral & Turquesa

Jul 1, 2008
3/3 found this review helpful

Just got back, stayed a week at the H10 Ocean Coral with my family, frankly not long enough. We were worried about the bad reviews but overall it was fine. We enjoyed ourselves because there are things that are not so great that you just learn to shrug-off. The reason we chose this place is because it's BRAND NEW and that's appealing. The size was another reason. Not too big, everything is an easy walk. Liked the fact that the room is next to the pool is next to the beach. Lastly, it’s only 20 minutes from the Cancun airport. Be forwarned, this review is pretty long since I wanted to put a lot of detail. I’m hoping that management would read it too.

PRIOR TO THE TRIP
We reserved 2 deluxe junior suites - requested via e-mail adjoining rooms one with a king and the other with 2 full. Very prompt reply.

LOBBY
+LOVED IT! Beautiful decor. It was open, airy and breezy - amazing ocean views. There were so many plush seating/lounges to relax in, fall asleep, read a book. It was kept very clean and organized.

CHECK-IN
+Gisel checked us in and was very nice and accommodating. Though our rooms were not adjoining rooms they did upgrade our room. Told them we were celebrating our anniversary so it was a nice welcome when we got to our room - champagne, chocolate covered strawberries, bathrobes and 2 extra beach towels in our room. We arrived around noon so we had a few hours before we got the key to our room. So we had lunch, explored around and relaxed at Mike’s Coffee. Be sure to dress beach appropriate, as you know it's HOT!!!

SUN - VERY HOT
From past experience, getting burned is not a great way to enjoy a holiday so bring and use tons of sun block! We had 50+ and 75+ constantly reapplying still got great tan.

ROOMS
++Our rooms were on the Coral side - building 6 and 7. It was on the quieter side and the rooms are bigger. The resort wasn't full so there were lots of available rooms. Again very nicely decorated, very spacious, had great ocean views from the 3rd floor. If you're room is on the ground floor, there's still a view of the ocean but there's the view of the pool or garden 1st. No problems with the showers leaking - they must have fixed the issue. They do give you extra towels to put on the floor.
-It's very humid in Mexico so I had to get used to the humidity in the room. The sheets/blankets just always felt damp. The sensor /motion detector was annoying. The other room we had a damp mildewy smell.

BEACH
+I'm a beach person so pretty much stayed at the beach. There were a lot of Palapas available and nicely spaced apart. It was easy to move the loungers around to follow the sun or stay in the shade. I noticed the next resorts' palapas/loungers were so close together in a straight line that you couldn't really move it around easily. There was a constant breeze so it was cool and refreshing.
-The beach NEEDS to be maintained better. They need to have mini-trashcans by each palapa so it's easy to dispose of garbage instead of being strewn everywhere. There’s A LOT of SEAWEED that has accumulated on the shoreline and in the water where the waves crash. There were 2-3 workers who would collect the seaweed by hand using a rake/wheelbarrow. I know 'coz I tried helping them out. Not sure how they can remove the seaweed out of the water but I'm thinking a BIG strainer will work. The beach and water of the 2 resorts next door (Paradisus and Excellence) was so much nicer - the water clearer and bluer. They both had huge tractor machines to do the job. There's no bar/service at the beach so you would have to go to the pool bar/buffet to get a drink. We did bring our own insulated mugs so we didn't have to go back and forth.

POOLS
+There were 4, all nice. Our room was by the quiet pool. It was rarely used, so truly a quite oasis. The busy pools were the activity and swim-up bar. Though we had 2 kids we didn't spend much time at the kiddie pool. There were nice pool beds with Jacuzzis running. We brought our own pool lounger that we used at the quite pool.

BUFFET
+LOVED BREAKFAST! There was a lot of variety to choose from for lunch and dinner. For a buffet, it's pretty good. I really like the Mexican poppers and cheese fries by the pool buffet. There was always fresh salsa and guacamole. Tons of fresh fruit and my favorite mangoes and guava.
-HATED THE HAMBURGERS AND HOTDOGS. I know for sure that's not what they are supposed to taste like so try if you must just to squash your curiosity...

A LA CARTE
+The best was Italian - try the beef carpaccio, lasagna, both risottos and chicken Parmesan. We had dinner there twice. Next best was Japanese, the Tepanyaki tables served the same thing for all who sat there + "show." We dined at a regular table and had a different menu. The shrimp and chicken entree was really good and you have to try the fried ice cream. We went to the Japanese restaurant after dinner just to have the dessert.
-They need to work on a reservation system. We stayed at another AI in PDC and there was a concierge dedicated to each building to make reservations for the A laCarte, now that's service. The wait ranged from over an hour and half (Italian) to no wait (at the Mexican - unmemorable. We were a group of 6 and most tables were only for 2 people. So couples didn't have to wait and would just breeze right in. Never mind the other groups of 3-6 people waiting outside of the restaurant for quite some time. It seemed that they didn't know how to put 2 tables together. It felt like they would rather you eat at the buffet. At least one of them is closed leaving only 2 open. The restaurants are very small so I'm not sure how they will handle when the resort is at full capacity.

DRINKS
+There was soda, beer and wine on tap.
-I don't really drink so I’m not the best judge but I know for sure they are not strong so you'd have to ask for double or even triple to make a difference. Don’t recall seeing top shelf.

WORKER'S + SERVICE
+Very hardworking, dedicated, really very nice and accommodating. They went out of their way to make our holiday experience pleasant.
-Management needs to fix this - they are understaffed in certain areas i.e. A la Carte restaurants, bar, beach. They don't get paid enough so we made sure to TIP.

MIKE'S COFFEE
+Try the Mexican or Caribbean or Irish coffee! Laced with liquor that kept me up at night. It's a nice place with plush leather chairs to relax and cool off during the day.
-The desserts were not great.

ACTIVITIES & NIGHTLY ENTERTAINMENT
There was a morning paper that detailed what was going on during the day and night but all we wanted to do was relax and do nothing so we didn't participate in any activities. The activities pool had something going on all the time - yoga, polo, bingo, beach volleyball, etc. After dinner we would just relax in the lobby area or by the pool for a nightcap.

SUMMARY
Definitely not 5 Star but for the price it was a good deal. Aesthetically pleasing + it's brand new. Need to work on the beach, A la Cart and more service.

“Had a great time at the Ocean Turquesa!!”

Ocean Coral & Turquesa

Jun 27, 2008
12/12 found this review helpful

My husband and I just returned from our weeklong stay at the Ocean Turquesa on Wednesday, June 25th. We are a 27 year old couple whose main purpose was to go somewhere and just relax and enjoy the ocean, pools, and drinks. I had been checking the reviews on here, but decided not to get too concerned because there are always differing opinions and I knew that if we went with a positive attitude we'd have a great time no matter what!! Overall, we had an awesome time and hope that everyone else going there will enjoy it as much as we did! We booked through TNT Vacations and paid about $2000 for 7 nights, including airfare. We also registered for the H10 club (free on their website) and made room requests.

ARRIVAL - As soon as you step into the lobby, you can see that this resort is modern and beautiful. The setup of the resort is awesome - not too far to get to the main areas and the beach is right there! Check-in went nice and quick and we were sent off with our concierge Cesar who was fabulous. He told us all about the resort and was very helpful and friendly throughout our trip. He escorted us to our room and was helpful with various questions we had throughout out stay.

ROOMS - We arrived at 2:30 and our room was all ready for us. We had the Deluxe Junior Suite (their standard room) and it looked beautiful, We had joined the H10 club and requested an upper level with a king sized bed and told them it was our anniversary. We got the room we requested and we had champagne and cake waiting for us when we arrived. The rooms were clean and the decor was new and modern. Our shower leaked just as we heard it would, so we placed the bath mat outside of it and let it soak up the water and didn't have any problems. The bathrooms are definitely semi-private - even the door to the toilet area doesn't go from floor to ceiling and you can see anyone taking a bath from the bedroom (even with the shade!) This wasn't a problem for us, but it would be a different story if we were traveling with anyone else.

TIMESHARE (even though they say it isn't a timeshare - it basically is!) We decided to go to the timeshare presentation to see what it was all about and because I heard on here that the concierge that recommends you gets a bonus. It was a big waste of our time. The VIP breakfast is breakfast at the buffet (not very VIP) and then the rep takes you to see a great room with fabulous views to convince you that you want that room, and then he tries to sell you a package. We sat down to talk to him and he wouldn't lower his price and kept bringing other people over to talk to us (we later heard that another couple had gotten the price down alot, so apparently we didn't stay long enough or he thought we had more money than we do.) Anyway, my husband told him we didn't want to waste anymore of his time and he told us we already wasted his time. So, we left and didn't let it affect our awesome vacation. I guess the lesson is that if you're not seriously interested in buying a timeshare, don't go!

BEACH - The beach is absolutely beautiful and can be seen from each of the pools if you prefer the view, but not the salt water! There was some sea grass, but workers kept it clean. There's almost always a beach volleyball game going and we jumped into many. There were always umbrellas and lounge chairs available.

POOLS - There are 4 pool areas - one in the kid's area, the busy activities pool, pool bar, and the pool over on the Coral side. We never had a problem getting an umbrella at one of the main pools. We spent most of our time floating around the pool bar pool and enjoyed meeting new people and lounging around. The staff was nice, but no two drinks were ever the same (still tasted good though!) Also, if you are planning to drink more than usual don't wear your sunglasses in the pool because they will fall off and you will lose them!! The far pool on the coral side was usually deserted - the most people that were ever there with us were 6 and we enjoyed the quiet and read our books/magazines that day. There are usually a lot of people at the activities pool and it's louder. They have dance lessons, aqua aerobics, water polo, volleyball, etc. We don't have any kids, but when we ventured that way the kids area looked nice and lots of kids seemed to enjoy the activities over there. One day they made really cool balloon hats and animals.

FOOD - First, I will say that I am a picky eater (not for fine tastes or anything, just picky) and I was able to find something that I liked everywhere. Breakfast at the buffet or beachfront restaurant was really good. They had omlettes, pancakes, bacon, sausage, french toast, etc. Lunch was the most difficult meal for me to find something that I liked, my safety was always pasta at the buffet. We enjoyed all of the restaurants for dinner. My husband liked the Japanese the best (they are a little heavy on the soy sauce, though) and I liked the Italian (try the steak or lasagna!) The Mexican restaurant was closed one night for a rehearsal dinner (the wedding the next time was beautiful!) and the Sports Bar was open randomly. The coffee shop was awesome and I drank a carmel mocha frappuchino almost every day.

SERVICE - We thought that the service was great. Everyone was very nice and spoke English very well (remember it is their second language!!) Almost all of the workers that we walked by said hello to us and smiled. They did their best to make the drinks that were ordered, but they didn't know some of them. If you know what's in it, they'll make it though. We ended up getting frozen midori sours one day that tasted really yummy. Service in the restaurants was very good, as well. Sometimes it seemed like they were understaffed, but our waiters were still on top of things. We also felt very comfortable with the staff. When we went to Punta Cana we had a great time, but some of the workers hit on me which just was bad.

NIGHT LIFE - I will have to admit that we didn't do many of the acitivities that they offered, but we heard that the shows were not very good. We did, however, make lots of new friends from all over the world of many different ages and spent our time hanging out with them and having drinks together.

EXCURSIONS - There aren't any water sports at the resort because they are close to a coral reef. The resort offers scuba diving and snorkeling tours that seem to be reasonably priced. We talked to some people who went and they had a great time. We wanted to go on the Senor Frogs trip, but found out that the price was only for Playa del Carmen resorts, so we went on the Party Hopper Tour in Cancun and went to 3 bars and didn't get back to the resort until 3 AM. It was a little much for us, but we still had a good time. We also did the Mayan Zipline. We thought we were just going swimming in the cenotes and then doing the zipline, but we actually did a bike ride (short, but rocky and hard to do when you haven't ridden a bike in forever!), watched a Mayan ritual (asking the gods for permission and protection in the cenotes, and then did snorkeling and tubing in 2 centotes (the clearest water I've ever seen), then the 2 ziplines, followed by a delicious lunch. We ended up having a great time and would definitely recommend it. Definitely wear bug spray though (I got about 30 mosquito bites). You just have to wash any bug spray and lotion off before going into the cenotes.

All in all, we had a fabulous trip and were really sad to leave. We would definitely go back to this resort again and again. I know that we don't all have the same experiences on a vacation, but please go into it with an open mind and enjoy yourself! If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them!

“Honest & Truthfull Review”

Ocean Coral & Turquesa

Save Review
2 of 5 stars
Bismarck, ND

5/7 found this review helpful

This review is Honest and Truthfull. My wife and I have been to several all inclusive resorts, however they were all Excellence Resorts (Adult & Couple Only) and we were very satisfied. At H10 Ocean Coral & Turquesa you get axactly what you pay for. If you are expecting 5-star qualtiy and service this resort will be a disapointment. We chose this resort because of the price.

1.) Check-in is slow and the front desk staff is very unfriendly.
2.) Welcome breakfast and guided resort tour is actually a TIME SHARE sales pitch that wastes about three hours of your time. Yes they will continue to bother you until you attend. We tied to skip and recieved several phone calls and notes on our door until we attended. Yes they are very high pressure and are very rude when you decline their offer. Request the $70.00 cash rather than the free message. Tricking guests into a sales pitch is not the best way to make them happy.
3.) The room was decorated with a modern theme and was very nice. The showers do leak water, however a correctly positioned towel stops most of the leaking. The room does have a safe, however getting the lock for the safe requires a credit card at the front desk. The lock is free of charge, just need a credit card.
4.) The pool area is very nice and clean. Getting a pool/beach towel is somewhat of a chore. You must trade a towel card for a towel, the card is returned when you bring the towel back. If you loose the card or the towel you will be charged $30.00 at check-out.
5.) The beach area is also very nice. However, It is littered with plastic cups that are left by guests.
6.) The food is okay, nothing exeptional. The mexican restraunt is by far the best.
7.) The shows were really bad, find something better to do with your time.

Bottom line, if you have been to a different all inclusive resort in this area and were satisfied go back to that resort. This resort is not the place to spend a honeymoon or an anniversary, go to a couples only resort for these occasions.

“Worst Vacation Ever”

Ocean Coral & Turquesa

Jun 23, 2008
1/7 found this review helpful

We went with another couple for a weeks vacation. Things went wrong from the start. We asked to be close to one another and they put us in two different locations. Our friends room door would not lock and they waited 4 hours for someone to come and when the did finally come, they decided they couldn't fix it and moved them into the room next door. Why didn't we have the room next door to begin with? They said they did not have two rooms close together. The girls bathrooms were always out of toilet paper and there was a bathroom that didn't even had a toilet seat on it in the ladies room...this same bathroom had a bar of soap for all to share rather than a soap dispenser. When we went to their Mexican Restaurant for fine dining...the waiter never filled out drink orders and we had to run out to one of the bars to get our own drinks. Not what I call fine dining. The topper was when I was seconds away from sitting down on the toilet to pee and the ceiling caved in and a cinder block just missed my head. I could have been killed! That happened our third night there, they then moved us to a 2nd floor nicer room and that room had a fridge that didn't work as well as a wobbly railing because half the bolts were missing. They then moved us to another room. We moved three times in 24 hours. Not how I wanted to spend my vacation. We asked for a cab and waited 45 minutes. They ran out of silverware at dinner one night so we had to use nacho chips to scoop up our meals. The next morning they ran out of juice glasses so we could not have anything to drink with our breakfast. They call themselves 5 star and I would give them 1/2 star at the most. The worst vacation I ever had and I warn anyone from ever going there. They promised stocked refridgerators in your room and always ran out of beer and bottled water. When we asked for bottled water to be delivered they told us they were short handed and we'd have to go from bar to bar to see if they had any left. Not 5 star service in the least! There was more that went wrong that week but I think you get my drift.
