The Hotel Club Akumal Caribe is a perfect choice if you want to be on the beach in the heart of Akumal - without having to pay too much for the privilege. The hotel is not a budget property, just no frills.
The trip was for 5 days in July with a college buddy - we just wanted to get down to Mexico, drink some Sol, eat some good Mexican food, and sit on the beach and relax. The hotel was perfect for that. Our room was comfortable, with two double beds and a balcony that looked out over the pool and the ocean. The room was no frills, with no TV and not the softest mattresses you've ever had. But it was great, perfect for what we wanted, spotlessly cleaned every day and in great shape. You would be hard-pressed to tell that the hotel was the first one in Akumal.
As for the location - Akumal is made up of a main bay, and several more remote bays on both the north and south side of the main bay/town area. This hotel is right on the beach in the main town and bay area. It is a great place to be if you want to be near the action. You can walk easily to all the bars and restaurants in the main area. But you are also on the most crowded part of the beach. We found this to be the best though, as we could walk to get drinks and meals, easily stop at the Chomak for groceries or to hit the ATM, and easily get a cab to Playa to go out. And though the beach is more crowded here, it's not *crowded* in the sense that you can't find a place to sit down or relax. It's just more crowded than the other (usually almost deserted) beaches in Akumal. Also you can walk in and swim on this beach without footwear/protection. We also really liked that the hotel provided bungalows and nice beach chairs at no charge.
Javier at the front desk was very helpful and friendly. La Buena Vida restaurant at North Akumal (Half Moon Bay) was amazing as always. Loncheria Akumalito was a great laid back place to get lunch and nurse a hangover. And Casa Cenote (worth the drive in Tankah) served us some awesome tacos, though the Tankah area still has some recovering to do from the most recent hurricane.
Overall, Club Akumal Caribe was perfect for what we wanted - and you can't beat the price. We paid $109 per night. Is there anywhere else you can be on the beach in paradise for that?
One final note: other reviews complained about the saltiness of the showers. The water in Akumal is like this. We didn't find the shower to be overly salty or problematic in any way.
Can't wait to go back to Akumal! Highly recommended.
