Courtesy in Mexico
Introduction
Mexico is a very unique place that like all countries has customs. Not the customs every Mexican follows but the customs that visitors should demostrate when going to Mexico
Remember things in bold are key points.
Tipping
Mexicans love getting US dollars. The value is worth more in Mexico, so please tip in USD, not pesos. Internationally, tipping is one of the greatest things you can do to thank a person. Naturally this applies to Mexican workers as well. In a resort you have bartenders, maids, and waiters.
As always you are suppose to tip waiters, that is a "no brainer"; However, you may ask, "What about maids?" In Mexico ,the people who work like to perform their jobs very thoroughly. And if you ask maids for extra towels, soap, or even shower caps they would be more than happy to give them to you, so don't be afraid to ask for things. Now tipping everyday is not necessary. What is expected and appreciated, is if you leave a generous tip on the last day of your stay.
Now what about bartenders you may ask. In an all-inclusive resort drinks are included, so do not tip every drink you get. If you ask for a lot in a container, then tip. This is now more accepted and is something you may wish to do.
Language Barriers
You go into a restaurant and the waiter asks you what you want. You try to explain in spanish. The question is, does speaking terrible spanish offend the Mexican person? No, acutually Mexicans love when you try to speak their language, so continue to suck at it and make the effort.
But there is a limit; don't resort to speaking like this: "Can-a I-a Buy-a This-a Thing-a?" It is completely disrespectful to the country and is offensive.
Everyone just wants to be treated courteously and politely!
